Should I be dancing while pregnant ???

edited August 2014 in March 2015 Moms
Hello everyone! My name is Emma (actually, it's half of my name lol). I'm kind of a young mom to be, almost 21 yrs old and this is my first pregnancy. I am almost 11 weeks along. My husband and I are super excited. As I mentioned before, this is my first pregnancy and I'm very cautious of what I do and eat and just everything. But, there's one thing that I can't help doing but everytime I'm somewhere in the midst of it I begin to worry and have doubts...but I still continue (yes, I'm bad). I love to dance. OMG! Bellydance most of all, samba, salsa, cumbia....and sometimes a very simple but enjoyable Arabian gulf dance. My question though, is it safe to be dancing around? Like, I do use my hips and abdomen a lot! I don't know if I should be doing that, but I really love dancing around. I heard a lot of different opinions. "It's not safe," "be careful," "don't do those movement." I would hate to give up something I enjoy but if it's for the safety of my baby, I will.

  • Activity is actually encouraged for pregnant women. I guess just do what you can, and if you feel uncomfortable, slow it down a little.

  • Thank you! I always tell myself that but people still insist that I should and tell me to sit and relax ....yea right lol. I gotta move !
  • I would say you are fine unless you feel cramping as well. Hopefully the dancing will hope you stay pretty fit! :D
  • I bellydanced my way through my first pregnancy! I've been doing it since I was 16, and I LOVE it. It's an amazing dance form for the joints, keeps everything limber and lubricated. I had a lot less hip pain with my first one than with my second (with my daughter I slid off that bandwagon due to time restrictions and a lack of classes out here).
You know your body best. As long as you're not hurting from it, and you take it easy as you progress, keep going!

  • Please don't stop dancing! That is a wonderful way to stay strong and fit throughout pregnancy. You are safe to continue any kind of exercise you were doing before you got pregnant (except dangerous sports, and of course stop if it causes pain/bleeding/shortness of breath). It's a complete myth that pregnant women need to sit on their ass for 9 months. That just makes you gain a ton of weight & get completely out of shape so it's harder to lose it once baby's born. Not to mention, labor is a serious workout--you want to stay fit!
  • Dance away!
However be cautious of lifts and the more exciting tricks where you could get dropped, early on it isnt as much of an issue but as you uterus leaves the confines of your pelvis it looses that extra protection.
    Keep moving and have fun.

  • The rule of thumb is to not start a NEW exercise.  So if you danced before, have at it!  Personally I'm in awe that you feel like doing anything in first tri.  I've slacked off of yoga because my stamina died like a meteor-struck dinosaur.

  • Keep dancing! I did Zumba until I was about 8 months pregnant with my first. Then the RLM pain became a little too unbearable with that much movement so I stopped. Listen to your body and you will be fine.
