Success after IF

MFI and IUI Question?

I'm usually on the TTTC board but I thought I'd get more help from this board. DH had mild MFI in late May and my RE recommended IUI w/ Clomid. Well I went in for my first IUI this morning and his numbers were awful. They said 1.7 million, way worse than back in May. I also went in for an u/s on Friday, was supposed to trigger but my follicle wasn't big enough (it was 14.5, they trigger at 20). I did get a positive on the OPK on Sat. afternoon. I didn't have my IUI until 8:45 this morning. My first question is has anybody had any luck with IUI with such horrible numbers? Also, I feel that Monday was too late as Sunday would have been the better day. I'm fairly new to all this as I just started seeing an RE in late April. I'm in the TWW officially but with his numbers I don't have much hope, as now he is going to see a urologist. I've been MIA from this board for a while but I'm just hoping someone can give me some advice, or at least an encouraging success story?

Re: MFI and IUI Question?

  • Sorry it's so stressful.  So, you didn't do a trigger shot?

I would agree that Sunday would have been the better timing for the IUI but your egg can be viable for 24 hours and a positive OPK doesn't necessarily mean you'll ovulate the next day, it could have happened on Monday.  As for the crappy numbers, I don't have experience with numbers that low.  My husband has had, at times, borderline count and motility, but it varied a lot each time it was tested.

For right now, just remember that it only takes ONE good sperm so even though in terms of fertility, 1.7 million is considered low, it is still a lot of sperm.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • @itsmevkb‌ everything about this cycle is annoying. I skipped the IUI in July because I got a positive OPK on July 3rd and the RE was closed on the 4th. So they suggested doing the trigger shot this month. They told me to come in on Friday for an u/s and said they would trigger me that day (I stressed all week over the shot). Then on Friday the u/s revealed my 1 follie was only 14.5, not even close for the trigger. So they called me later that day & told me to do an OPK and come in the day after my surge. Wouldn't you know I surged on Sat., RE doesn't do IUI's on Sunday, so I was dealing with the same issue as last month, I was furious. Not to mention wasting $100 on the shot that I never used. So I reluctantly went in Monday morning for the IUI only to find out my DH's count post wash was 1.7 mill, which is beyond awful. Needless to say, I have had a stressful week and really for nothing! Sorry so long but I'm so frustrated. My RE said she's seen success with such a low number, you only need one but I just feel like everything is against me.

  • Do you know any specifics on his motility or morphology? We are MFI and pretty bad as well, but on all three areas, not just count. We were given less than 1 percent chance of ever conceiving on our own (I also don't ovulate so it's not just DH's issues). Our RE has always been open to us considering IUI but told us the reality of the numbers and what he prefers to work with, we aren't even remotely close to that. We went straight to IVF last time and again this time because his numbers didn't improve. Sorry you've had such a frustrating experience. It's so hard!

  • Is your husband taking anything to try and increase his count?

I would find a clinic that works every day of the week.  In the fertility business I consider that a must.

  • @itsmevkb my H takes vitamins, he goes to the Urologist on Monday and I'm going to ask him if there is anything for him to take. I'm seriously considering finding an RE that is open 7 days a week, I'm just afraid to change at this point, but it's a big problem for me.

  • Hopefully the urologist will be able to give him some ideas on how to increase his count. We were dealing with lower counts/motility and DH was given a round of strong antibiotics just in case there was any type of prostate infection. The thing that helped the most was DH cut out all alcohol and his counts improved dramatically. Not that he drank much to begin with (a few beers a week) but it made a really big difference after a couple of months. The cycle that we were successful on had a lot of issues working against the odds but somehow it worked! Good luck!!
