Anyone practice yoga!?

Hi everyone! Does anyone practice yoga and if so are you changing your practice? I asked my np and she said anything but hot yoga was okay. She said I didn't need to change my practice at all, that my body would let me know. Anyways I went to yoga and mentioned I was pregnant after a class and they are now interrupting my practice with all these modifications. And strongly suggesting prenatal yoga. What do you guys think?

Re: Anyone practice yoga!?

  • I've recently switched my physical activities to include yoga (I usually play roller derby - not allowed to skate for two). I've been okayed for hatha and ashtanga, and prenatal (no Bikram or vinyasa). I took prenatal yoga last pregnancy, but the instructor sucked (way too easy, way too chatty). I'm at a new studio now and hoping for better.

  • All that I ever do is vinyasa, since it's the only type of yoga that I feel I get a true workout with, and it's a no-no. I've just been walking/jogging outside when it's nice, and on my treadmill when it's not. Can't say I'm in the best of shape like I was pre-baby, but I know I'll get it back.
  • I don't do it regularly, but I love prenatal yoga while pregnant. It really opens up your hips and keeps your back strong while also flexible to get ready for that birthing process!

  • Prenatal yoga feels so good.
  • I know there's certain poses they recommend not doing while pregnant. Any kind of back bends, poses that stretch the abdominal muscles, head stands, poses where you lay on your back, etc. I would probably feel more comfortable doing prenatal yoga since it's specifically tailored to pregnant women. I'm sure it will be easy compared to what you're used to, but it's better than over doing it. I know I would get annoyed if my practice kept being interrupted by modifications the whole time.

  • I was doing prenatal yoga until I got put on modified bed rest the other day for sudden unexplained bleeding. I have an appointment on Wednesday to check baby again, and I was planning on asking if some simple poses would okay to do if baby is still doing great and the bleeding has stopped. I've been doing yoga almost daily for years, and am definitely feeling the effects of stopping already.

  • We have a gal come and give yoga class at work 2 days a week, She is very open to everyone modifying the moves to fit your own body, especially as most of the women are older and many people have joint problems. I have noticed that my balance is way off (compared to pre-pregnancy) and that my belly gets in the way for some of the moves, but I take it slow and do what my body will allow.

I think your experience will completely depend on the instructor you have so if you find one you don't like move on to the next!
  • Not yoga but Pilates and my Pilates ball. Life savors !!!! You can always find cheap prenatal yoga dvd's . Or find few. YouTube videos . It's a staple pregnant or not pregnant for me . I don't survive without at least a few moments on the ball. Lol That's what i sit on when my girls are on e floor playing .
  • I prefer my regular yoga classes to prenatal... but that may change as my belly grows (it did last time). Yogajoural.com has great information. There's an article that gives modifications for experienced yogis as well as lists/pictures of specific poses that you'll probably want to avoid (like bow pose, below). I also prefer taking classes from instructors that practiced and/or taught while they were pregnant because I feel like they are less scared by the whole pregnancy thing, and therefore less likely to force modifications when you don't really need them. But of course, listen to your body - you will absolutely know when something doesn't feel right. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Really? The heat, most of all. It isn't recommended to be doing an hour long class in a 90+ degree room. The positions are also more strenuous. I was told absolutely no to both vinyasa and bikram, and I understand why.

  • I've been to multiple studios, and not a single vinyasa class has been unheated. I've been doing yoga for 8+ years.
  • My studio has unheated vinyasa. But it is classified as a "strenuous" workout, and the instructor advised against it. Ashtanga is an easier flowy version and she said that would still be okay.
  • I do prenatal and although it seems easy now, it gets much harder as you get larger! I found regular classes to be uncomfortable right now and I like meeting other preggo's. I really think yoga helped me prepare to push for 3 hours with my first!
  • Ok I've only done anything labeled as "vinyasa" through a DVD so I didn't know that it was the type commonly practiced during hot yoga. My friends that do hot yoga just call it hot yoga and have never described the type of yoga that they are doing. Thanks for the clarifications though :)
  • I have been doing hot yoga because it is something I practiced before pregnancy. Many health practicioners don't recommend it because they don't understand it. Every Bikram instructor knows how to modify the class for a pregnant woman, and as long as I stay hydrated during the session, I feel great. Do a little online research and read what pregnant women have said about their Bikram practice- it's quite inspiring- especially to read their easier birth stories.
