June 2014 Moms

SS: Born Free Users (and other bottles users, for that matter - everyone, c'mon in!)

We used Born Free bottles with M and never had a problem.  Loved them - they were fab.

So I picked up two new 5 oz BF bottles since I couldn't find our little guys from before, so they ones I currently have have been in use since May.  Not terribly long.

They're leaking.  I don't know why - just now, I looked over at the bottle on my desk and it was in a pool of "milk."  When I tilted it, more came out from the collar.

I don't think I've done anything different - everything is assembled correctly, put on nice and tightly, etc.  The only thing I've noticed lately is I think I've torn a little bit of the vent (right where there was already an opening) because of trying to clean inside, but that doesn't make sense as a possible reason for milk getting outside the collar, right?

BF users - anyone else have this problem?  Ideas?

Other bottle users - anyone super duper love their bottles?  I never really dug the Dr. Brown's, so I don't think I'd switch to that.  I am intrigued by the Tommy Tippee, so if anyone has those, I'd love to hear about your experience in case I decide to give one a test run.

Yes, and in a few other stores.  Given that I do not know that that is causing the problem, I was curious to find out if others had experienced something similar.  I'm not going to buy replacement vents if the ones I have are actually functioning just fine.

  • I use Avent bottles. There is a little ring that you have to put in between the nipple and bottle. If i don't it leaks like crazy. I forget a lot. Any chance there is something like that?

Also I do really like the Avent. They seem to have helped us have less gas problems.
  • @chickpea912 one of mine does that. Not huge leaking and it clearly hasn't bugged me enough to either investigate why or pull it from the rotation. Just commiserating and sorry you got a dud.

  • I had that problem with my doc browns with C for a little while and it was something to do with howi was heating them. If I didn't remember to unscrew the collar a bit while heating it would leak terribly.

  • We tried several types with C and he seems to like Tommee Tippee the best (although he is learning to take a bottle and fights it still). I think the wide neck helps him latch.

  • I've been using these bottles (not these specific ones, the kind) for years, and I'm putting them together the same way I always have. Maybe I'll see if I can find an old vent that isn't torn to see if it makes a difference and it's an easy fix like this. I wasn't sure if it was a quality issue that wasn't around four years ago.

Interesting- I hadn't thought of this. So jus slightly loosen and retighten before feeding did the trick for you?

  • I use the Tommee Tippee Anti-Colic bottles and LOVE them.  Granted, I've only tried two other types besides these, but they really seem to help LO with her gas issues.  I just bought 3 more from BRU because I don't like the other ones I have as much.  They were on sale for $12 I believe (and they are the 9 oz ones).

Yup. Not sure why because they should be venting, but heating it up expanded thebaor too quickly and loosened things or broke seals or something.

  • We have Avent and Dr. Brown's (sorry, not helpful!). DD seems to like Dr. Brown's more. We don't know why because the nipple seems to be the same? She only gets a bottle once a day or so anyway. I feel that there's a lot of chance in finding the right bottle and what works for one baby or family is very individual.

  • We're in search of a good bottle. DS collapses the nipple on everything but Dr Brown, Avent, and Playtex.
The Dr Brown always seem to leak. We had a dud ring in one that was malformed but it seems they all leak to an extent. Avent seems to be his favorite. I'd like to do playtex if I could get away with feeding straight from the breast milk bag, but that seems to leak too.

And I just found out our daycare requires a new bottle for every feeding. Once the baby puts the nipple in his mouth they consider it contaminated and can't be washed and reused. I get that it would be a lot of work for them to clean and keep track of 12 babies bottles for 5 to 6 feedings per day....But I hadn't planned on the logistics of pumping, bagging for freezer, then bottling... so much "stuff" every where.

  • I've only used the Medela bottles so far. I'm not sure if they were leaking or if DD is just a messy eater. I'm pretty sure she is just a messy eater.

I have tommy tippie, avent, and playtex from showers and whatnot but we haven't tried them yet.

FYI- bru has Tommie tippie for 50% off right now.
  • Lurker here - I used the born frees for DS1 and when the vents tore they leaked every time. Try using an un-torn one to confirm that is the issue. DS2 doesn't like the born frees so we are using Tommee Tippee.

@kings13‌ Thanks, lurker!!! You have proven why I started this thread. I didn't think that could be the reason, so your post was super helpful. I'll have to see if I can find an old, unaffected vent.

  • I use Tommee Tippee bottles. DS seems to like the nipple best. Pretty much hates Dr. Brown's but I would like to see how he feels about the wide neck bottles. The TT bottles never leak for me and I love the wide bottle size.
  • We tried TT last night and she eventually took it. I bought that and a wide neck dr browns. This morning, thought, the BF fight leak so who knows egat is going on.

  • We use the platex drop in ones. Dealing with exclusive pumping, we wanted something as easy as possible to do, and where we wouldn't have to wash bottles as often. She didn't care for Medala and we bascially just stuck with playtex.

Being with my LO rocks! DD born 6/13/14.

  • We've been going through bottles and nipples like crazy. We just settled on the super cheap Evenflo bottles from the supermarket. She loves them, they don't leak, and were a bargain at 3 for $5.

I wanted to use Tommee Tippee amd we have tons of those bottles, but with P in tue nicu so long he got used to these generic nipples and wont latch to anything else. If you want to try Tommee Tippee let me know and I will send you a couple! I also have that one that looks like a real boob and starts with an M, whatever it is called, but P won't use anything but these generics lol
@jmar2011 Are they the Munchkin Latch?  I saw those when I was looking at bottles the other day.
