Surgery at 3mos

Next Friday DS will have surgery to address polyps in his nose. It requires general anesthesia ... Aka he's going to be completely under. :( The thought of it terrifies me. Anyone have experience with surgery on a LO this young? Any advice or heads up on what to expect afterward? The plastic surgeon we are working with has assured us it's "minor surgery, no big deal" but sorry, that's my little boy and I think it's a HUGE deal!

  • Not that young, but my older DS needed surgery. Kids are amazingly resilient. He was groggy coming out, took a long nap when we got home and then was completely normal! Good luck. Oh...and they often let you go back to the OR with them. You can hold them while they give them a gas and then they put the IV in so it's not traumatic.

  • I've never posted here before but I saw your post and wanted to respond. My son had surgery when he was 10 weeks old ( now 14 weeks) for a peri- rectal abscess and fistula. I know the surgerys are very different but he did have to go under. His procedure was a same day surgery. To be honest the worst part for me was seeing him have the Iv port put in and right after when he was still a little out of it. Once we were able to see him it took maybe 30-45 minutes for him to seem normal. He was in some pain in the surgical area but it seems that his throat was what caused more pain. He didn't eat as well for the 2 days after surgery. Make sure that you have Tylenol on hand so you won't have to stop (assuming he won't get prescription strength pain medication). I don't normally look here but I will keep an eye on this post for the next few days and if you would like any more info I would be Happy to tell you more about our situation.
