Baby Names

How would you pronounce this name?

Hubby and I have already decided on a first name for baby girl but the middle name is still up for debate. We wanted the middle name to be a family name, but my family is Brazlian and the name we have our hearts set on seems like it would be hard to pronounce in English.

We wanted the middle name to be Elis, which in Portuguese is pronounced Elise, but I'm worried that I'll have to constantly explain the pronunciation to everyone. Unfortunately, since it is a family name I can't just change the spelling to make it more easily understood in English.

  • I pronounced it Ellis

  • I actually did guess ee-leese. Also, having to correct people isn't a big deal, especially with the middle name. If you love Elis, use it!

  • I would have pronounced it Ellis, but since its the MN I don't think it would be a big deal. Most people will hear it but not see it.
  • I probably would have pronounced it Ellis. However, knowing your Brazilian background made me think Elise. Sooo...I would think that anyone close to you would be able to figure it out. Even if you had to correct them once. Plus, it's a middle name. You really won't be explaining it as much as you think.

  • I thought EE-Liss.  Not a big deal for my middle names.  Anything goes there.
  • Like Ellis but like PP said if it's a middle name I wouldn't worry about it

  • My first guess would be Ell-iss. I think it's fine though, most people won't need to pronounce the middle name.

    Agree.
  • I actually did guess the Elise pronunciation.  I say go with it.  As a middle name it won't be that big of a deal.  My middle is Shao-Tang and DS's middle is Xin, both Chinese.  It's not even an issue.
