Tdap booster

Let me start by saying I stand nowhere on the vaccination/anti-vaccination front. I am just curious who else has been told to get this.

I went in for my week 30 checkup and my doctor asked that I get a tdap booster. I told her I received the tdap booster 2 years ago before we began starting to try to get pregnant but she told me she still wants me to get one now while I am pregnant with the hopes some immunity passed on to baby. Makes sense to me and I asked a OB nurse friend who agreed. Just wanted some reassurance I guess that others are getting it since it was something I wasn't expecting to hear/need.

Thanks!

  • I got a TDAP at my 28 week appointment, my doctor said they give it to all pregnant moms in the 3rd trimester ( at least to his patients) so that some immunity will pass to baby. So basically I got told the same thing you did. ;)

I will be getting the booster, DH will be getting the booster, and per my MFM, anyone who will be "staying with us and changing diapers" will also be getting the booster. IMO (which is a strong one) it is irresponsible for a pregnant woman not to receive the vaccine if there are no medical reasons preventing her from receiving said vaccine.

eta: all grandparents are also receiving the vaccine.

  • Yep.

  • Wow, I guess I'm surprised that I hadn't heard or read that this recommendation would be coming. Yes, DH and my mom plan on getting the booster as well. Whatever we can do to keep baby girl happy and healthy!
  • I got it at 28 weeks and DH did it at the same time. Also having grandparents get theirs too.

  • I'm getting mine at my 30 week. (I was only 27 weeks at my 28 week). I am also having my husband get one.

  • Where are you getting your husbands? I got mine at my 28 week but I'd like him to get it.

  • A lot of pharmacies do them. I work at a pharmacy and we give vaccines. That's where my hubby is getting his.
  • I got it at 28 weeks too. I need to have dh call his dr. to see if he's due.

  • I got mine last week and DH will get his next month. My mom is going to get it as well, once she finds somewhere to get it. Her doc refuses as did Walgreens. Both claiming that she didn't need it as she got it 5 years ago. So, she will probably get it once she is up here.

The new "recommendation" is to get it early third tri. That was baby supposedly gets some immunity to pertussis through momma. And they want you to get it again with every pregnancy. I JUST got it two years ago when DS was born. Getting it the day you're going home from the hospital with a newborn is NOT a good idea as it can make your arm very sore for days.

ETA: County health departments will do it for low cost or free for expecting parents.

  • I got mine just before getting pregnant, so I didn't have to get it again. BUT I would have gotten it at my 30-wk appointment had I not gotten it earlier.

  • I got one three years ago when DS was born and will be getting one again at my next appointment. I've also made sure all aunts and uncles are up to date as well as the grandparents.

Pertussis is scary and I am going to do everything I can to help prevent it.

  • Question... If family members got it 2 years ago when DD was born, are they good or do they need it again? Not talking about me, but my husband and grandparents got it with her per our request...

  • I got mine yesterday. :( I'm such a whimp! That shot is the worst. But ya my OB told me about it back at the beginning of my pregnancy. They say to get it between27 and 32 weeks. The reason being they want baby to hopefully have some of the immunity because there is a lot of whooping cough around lately which is deadly to a baby. And if memory serves me right your baby doesn't get the shot till they are older. (Several months old)

  • @MollyC20‌ my doctor said that as long as family has gotten it within the last ten years they are ok. It is just for mommas that need it with each pregnancy.
  • I will be getting it.

  • My husband and I have both gotten it, and baby's grandparents and my sister will get it as well.

See my doc actually recommended re-boosters if it's been over five years because the whooping cough part of the vaccine may expire sooner than the rest of the components. I'm not really pushing my parents and iLs because they aren't local and won't see LO all that often in person.

Yes every 5 years is what my doctor recommends.
My husband is told to get his every year because he is a carpenter and stabs himself with nails frequently, so the tetanus is important.

  • Yes, it's a new recommendation to get it during every pregnancy. I didn't get it with my son bc I had it the year before but I will get mine tomorrow at my OB appt. It is the same logic with the flu shot, you should get it to pass some to your baby. Babies can't have the flu shot until they are 6 mos old.

  • Thanks for posting. I was bringing DD in for some vaccinations and asked about getting a re-up on my TDAP (I had it less than 2 years ago when I was pregnant) and they told me I didn't need to. Clearly sounds like they gave me bad advice. I'll be asking my OB this Friday!

  • My OB told me the same thing. I double checked, too, since I also had the shot two years ago. She said it won't hurt and will help pass on to the baby. She said she'd do it around 36 weeks. Also said to recommend it to others who will be in close contact with baby. Hubby will be getting one for sure.

  • I asked about Tdap at my appointment today bc I had heard if you get it while pregnant you pass on the immunity to baby.  My MD said he would give be the vaccine in the hospital after the birth, but that my husband should get it now... Should I ask again you think?

  • @cmac6186‌ at the pharmacy I work at you don't need a prescription... However, some insurance won't cover it.. Ours is covering for Hubby's tho, and they told us just go to the pharmacy and request it
  • DH and my Mom, who will be staying with us when baby is born, both got their TDAP shots 2 years ago when we had DS1. I got mine in the hospital after he was born (the new recommendations came out a month before he was born, before that, they recommended giving it to women after they give birth). My OB usually gives the booster at 32 weeks but I asked for it at 28 weeks and they gave it to me then.

BTW, there is no difference between the booster and the actual TDap shot. I thought they were different but it's the same thing.

  • Same as PPs...I got mine at 28 weeks. My mom and dad will be staying with is for the first 2 weeks and we've asked them to also get the vaccine.

Btw, my DH was able to get his shot at my 28 week appointment as well...my midwife's office is part of a larger medical complex, so she just had him run out to the main desk to register and we got them at the same time. If he's with you at your appointments, might not hurt to ask.

  • Yup.  Got mine at 28 weeks.  The CDC recommends a TDaP booster with every pregnancy regardless of when you last had it.  Like PPs said it's to pass immunity on to the baby.

  • Okay.  And just because I'm now curious.  What are everyone's thoughts on going about asking everyone (our family basically) to make sure that they are up to date on TDaP and Flu shots before coming to see our baby?

I live far from family, but anyone that is staying with us in the weeks after was asked. My mom (ironically, the nurse) is throwing a fit. Everyone else was totally on board. They're staying with us for a few weeks so I feel like it's my right to ask...if we were around family and seeing everyone only occasionally, I feel like anything other than asking is overstepping. There are a shitton of threads on this topic in most boards...opinions are all over the place.

Essential, IMO.  Anyone who will be spending any time around the baby, anyway.  Which reminds me, I have to harass my parents about getting flu shots this year...

Is it just tDAP and Flu for people visiting? Just checking before I broach the subject with family...

  • I got one at 28 weeks too. I was told they recommend every woman gets one with EVERY pregnancy no matter if they had one recently. It is fairly "new" but common recommendation I believe. Mine hurt like a bitch though for like 1 week or more. Strange it would be that sore. I did my left side, so sleeping on the left was super uncomfortable for awhile.
