High-Risk Pregnancy

Diabetic Retinopathy

So I'm a bit stressed out right now.  Went in to see the opthamologist today for my standard 2nd tri check up.  She is having me come in once a tri right now because I had some very early signs of retinopathy going in to this pregnancy.

I went in today knowing that my eyes were probably in worse shape thanks to how quickly my endo has had me crash my A1C (dropped 2% in a month, I don't have my last result back yet but I'm guessing it is going to be down again by a good chunk).  Low and behold I've got a couple of small cotton wool spots in both eyes.... great.....

Doc doesn't seem too worried as she is almost 100% sure the issues are due to the fast drop in my a1c (blood pressure runs low and hypertension is the other common cause of the cotton wool spots).  She does want me back in two months rather than 3 in case things do start to get worse.  So of course that has set me off worrying.  My vision isn't affected at this point and the cotton wool can receed so if it is due to the a1c drop there is a good chance things will start to patch themselves up between now and after baby his hear.  Still not stress that I really want to deal with

It just kind of sucks having to deal with side effects of getting my diabetes under good control!

  • I don't have any experience or advice with this but I'm sending T&P's your way that it will clear up!

I will definatley give it a read.  My doctor doesn't seem concerned that it will affect the pregnancy, more that the pregnancy will affect the retinopathy.  Either way it sucks to end up with extra complications from getting the diabetes under tight control.  In the long run though the good control will benefit the state of my eyes so I'm just trying to focus on that.
