Yikes! Just had a cleaning at the dentist and my gums were soooo sensitive! I had a great check up last time - just weeks before I found out i was expecting. This time I was bleeding and in pain the whole time. I guess pregnancy can make a little gingivitis worse, but that really sucked. Also, being tipped slightly back in the chair is no fun now, I could barely breath. And I have 2 cavities! I need to call the OB to confirm that I can get those filled soon, but I dont think she would have a problem with it.
Also, I had a very small greenish spot on my gums that I noticed a few weeks ago. It didnt hurt, so I just thought I would wait till this appointment to ask about it. Turns out that the little blue flecks in my toothpaste (Crest Pro Health) can get stuck in your gums and they will just hang out there! The dentist got it out and told me to switch toothpastes. So FYI - watch out for the blue flecks!
Re: Dentist visit
I'd also ask your dentist about the size of the cavities. I had two a few years ago that were pretty small and my dentist said that he could drill them faster than it would take to numb me. I chose not to be numbed and just as I was starting to feel a little more pain than I could handle, he was done. It made it a super quick and easy process.
Next cleaning will be after LO is here and normally DH and I have an appointment at the sametime. So we had to schedule them one after another so someone was watching LO. It was so strange to have to start to plan those things.
I think my gums are pretty healthy this pregnancy... I got scared straight a couple of years ago and started flossing every night, no excuses. I also got an electric toothbrush, which is amazing--I will never use a manual brush again. It was really gratifying to actually feel my teeth and gums get cleaner and healthier with my new regimen, and to hear my dentist confirm how well everything looked.
Healthy gums are related to healthy pregnancy, so it's worth taking extra care right now!
