How sure about gender?

Had my neuchal translucency scan/ultrasound today. Everything looks normal and they asked me if we wanted to know the gender. We said "yes, if you can tell what it is". So she did some looking and told us that "it's probably a boy since I can see something there." Should I take this with a grain of salt?? Any one know the percentage of accuracy at 13 weeks??? I don't plan on painting the room or anything or buying any boy things until my 18 week scan but just curious what to think.

I think that at 13 weeks, boys and girls look essentially the same in the genital department.

@HerHighness has a great link to a website that details this (I should probably bookmark that page).

I think you need to be further along to know for sure. I wouldn't put any stock in her prediction until your anatomy scan.

My ultrasound tech said you couldn't really tell until 14 weeks.

I tend to agree with the PPs.

However, I will say that with my first, the ultrasound tech told me during the NT scan that it was DEFINITELY a boy. No hesitations, she was 100% sure... and it was confirmed at my anatomy scan that I was having a boy. Who knows if it was just a lucky guess or not.

ETA: I didn't get any guesses this time around!

Our office gave a 70%. But, my tech used the angle method (https://www.baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html). Both male and female will have "something there" at 13 weeks (since they're both still external) so I'm not sure what method your tech was using. I hope that makes sense.

Anyway, they guessed girl at my NT ultrasound, but we aren't telling anyone until the A/S.

My tech was fairly confident last week that we have one boy and one girl, but I'm not painting nurseries or anything. I am familiar with ultrasound images (in dogs and cats LOL!) and their genitals most definitely looked different from each other, but who knows......

Take it with a grain of salt for sure.

My MFM took a guess at 12 weeks. (he explained to me what he was seeing.) The U/S tech told me the Dr is usually right 85% of the time, but don't run out and buy anything pink yet.

Thanks for all the input, ladies! I knew I was going to take things with a grain of salt when she told me anyways, but all of your info has just solidified that! I'll let you know what the anatomy scan says. If it's a boy, I need to get some boy stuff, as I have allllll pink! Lol

This is the link i use. I found it pregnant with my first. I think the development is cool but it also shows you now similiar things look at certain parts of pregnancy.

I went for an early gender ultrasound today, and the place I went to starts doing them at 13 weeks. They say that between 13-14 weeks parts start to fall into place so to speak and they can usually tell. However there is a quite a difference between 12-13 weeks.

We were told girl today...but aren't going out and buying anything.

If the tech had said...bc of the angle of the nub or something a little more technical I might put a little more weight to this. But at 13 weeks you're going to see a little something there regardless. Useless prediction is my prediction.

I had my 13 week scan today and they said it might be a boy based on the genitals protruding. I could see it sticking right out. I'm not sure how accurate that is... I'm holding my breath until the anatomy scan later because I was really hoping for a girl.

I have 2 girls and am hoping for a boy so I was excited to get this news, however am not telling our family until after my 18 week scan, as this may be the first boy on this side of the family. Don't want to have everyone get excited and then possibly tell them something different later.

I've also heard that if they say boy than it's less likely to be wrong but don't know how true this is

More like a massive chunk of salt. We were told that DD was a boy throughout my entire pregnancy, including after our 20 week scan. It wasn't till my last scan in 3rd tri that they decided she was a girl afterall. Super stressful.

@cls78 did they say two girls?! I know it's just an old wives tail, but our hbs have been similar so I'll be curious to see

My NT was at exactly 13 weeks. The cut off is like 13 weeks and 6 days. I know because they messed up my 12 week appointment and so I had to stress out about finding a facility to do the scan. My doctor wanted me to drive an hour away to the other office. I told them that was ridiculous because my commute from there would have been two hours to get to my job. In the end, they sent me to the main hospital only 10 minutes away (which they could have done in the first place!) and I had mine done there.
