93% head size?

Went to the dr today for 4month check up & shots. DD is around the 50% tile for height & weight... And in the 93rd for head circumference. Her head does not look unusually large, what does this mean? Shoyld have asked the dr while I was there but was preoccupied calming her down after her shots.

Re: 93% head size?

  • We had the same thing, 92nd on head circumference, 72nd on weight and 42nd on height. I said, "so my baby is short and fat with a big head?" The doctor busted out laughing and said no he will even out!

  • It doesn't mean much normally. Head size measurements can vary greatly on where exactly they put the measuring tape. It can be slightly worrisome if it goes from like 20% to 93% in a month or two. DS1 has been way off the charts since his 2 month checkup. He is two now and is at 100% for a 4-5 year old. Because his head is so massive, he has had to get ct scans but everything came back normal.
  • My baby measured 105% head, 95% weight, and 105% height and the Dr. said he's very well proportioned. The percentile is based on average head circumference, weight, and height for babies at various ages.
  • We're also in the average-sized-body with a HUGE head camp.  I think he looks pretty normal, for a baby.  But what do I know.  He's been this way since he was born though, and is showing consistent growth in all three measurements, so it's normal.

  • I don't think it means much. LO has been in the 97%ile since birth. He has a massive noodle. I love it. :)
  • We are over 99% here. Dr said he has "familial macroencephaly" aka inherited big head. It was just me at the appt. :(

  • I doubt it's as big as it sounds. My LO has always had a smaller than normal head size and next to any other baby her head looks the same. The variation is so slight, you have no reason for concern. I've never seen a baby with such a massive head that he can't hold it up so I don't see why a 93% percentile would even be an actual problem.

  • Mine are both 75th for height & weight but 50th for head. I blame DH because he is a big guy with a tiny head, while I'm a small lady with a large head. I had such high hopes that they would be normally proportioned...

I wouldn't worry. As long as they stay on the same curve.

DD1 fell from 75th to 50th pretty quickly, and her soft spot closed on the very early end of normal, so we went for x-rays and to a specialist, but she seems to be just fine, and our pedi was rather alarmist to order the tests (per the specialist), so we've changed practices.

  • Head measurements are notoriously inaccurate. The only thing worth worrying about is if their head isn't growing.

  • Patrick's head was so off the charts we had to get an ultrasound to look for swelling or fluids. I think it is just measurements that they can monitor to make sure there are no drastic changes between visits.

  • Both head and height are very inaccurate. DD has weekly checkups and she had lost as much as an inch for height and 2cm for head between appointments which obviously isn't correct unless I have a shrinking baby. It really depends on who is measuring.

This was us and everything turned out to be fine also. Sam is in the 95% for height and weight also so his head was in proportion and on the same curve since birth. I agree that they are mostly looking for big changes.
