I'm so sorry that you have to take the 3 hr GTT. Hopefully, it will end up normal.
As for the fasting or reducing sugar. If you are told to fast, you should as they may decide to test a fasting blood sugar or may be drawing blood for some other blood test at the same time that may require you to be fasting. If they tell you to eat as you normally do, I would do that, though if you do pass after fasting or altering your diet, you aren't really "cheating" as the glucose load in the drink should be adequate to bump your sugars if you have GD regardless. I ate a chocolate croissant before mine, being pregnant, starving and early to an appointment with an ABP in the office lobby is very bad combination
Good luck !!! I failed my 1 hr bad with a 169. Took the 3 hr and they said I have impaired glucose intolerance . Not quite GD but want me to change and monitor my diet , no blood monitoring . Ugh it's not the end of the world , just going to be a lil rough
So jealous of all the PPs who failed the 1 hour but then passed the three hour. With DS (at 26weeks), I failed the 1 hour test with a score of 423. It was so high, they didn't even make me take the 3 hour test. This time, I took the test at 17 weeks. I failed the 1 hour with a score of 162 and they said I totally bombed the 3 hour test as well. I've been on insulin since 19 weeks. It's been a challenge to curb the cravings for sweet fruits, sweet tea, and cream soda. In fact it really sucks sometimes. But it's only for such a short time. And so worth the effort to not have to deliver a 10 pound baby. I truly hope you pass with flying colors but remember that failing isn't the end of the world. :-)
no. you consume the drink (or jelly beans) an hour before the draw and eat/drink nothing in between the drink and draw.
gotcha! Thanks for clarifying!
I am glad I don't have to drink the nasty and wish you all luck!
@oceanbreezy1 - 423?! WHOA! Did you feel like complete shit? I start to feel icky if I go above 180-200 ish. Glad you were able to control it with insulin.
I went in for my 3 hour test this morning. The drink is super sugary. I could feel and chew on the sugar grains and by the end my throat was kind of burning. I had to sit in the lobby the whole time but was prepared. I brought DH and my iPad. My level was 186 for my first test. DH and I plan to change our diet whether I pass this test or not.
I took the 1 hr about a week ago and failed, too. I scored 149. I was bummed. But I took the 3 hr the next day and passed. Like others have said, a lot of people fail the first one so try not to worry...even though thats hard to do. Its all for the health of your baby. ☺
@Kristil2014 for the 1hr i could leave the clinic and return for the test but for the 3 hr k had to stay in the building. I just brought my computer and work and a movie to fill my time between blood draws.
I failed my 1 hour today. Got a 157, so I'm scheduled to do a 2 hour at the lab on Thursday. I failed the 1 hr with DD1 and passed the 3 hour so hopefully this will be the same!
Good luck with yours!

I failed my one hour on Friday. The doctor's office called to tell me at 4:30 on Friday that not only had I failed, but my result of 205 was enough to skip the 3 hour and start treatment right away - yet they wanted to leave me hanging until the hospital called this week to schedule time with the dietitian. Who does that to someone??? After I finished with the panic attack I just went to town on research - bought a glucometer and all supplies and started tracking immediately. I was able to develop a meal plan for myself over the weekend that kept my numbers in the target ranges. I had my appt today and just have a few modifications to make to include more carbs - here's to hoping I can stay within the target ranges with the added carbs. It's definitely scary and a lot to get over, but it's just one of my first official duties as mommy to keep her safe and do what's in her best interest.
Took mine yesterday and just waiting to hear back. I had GD with Sweet Pea but not with Peanut. I was able to control my GD with just diet. The biggest pain was checking my sugar levels after each meal.
