Breastfeeding

Blood in Milk

Each morning, before I feed LO (10 months), I manually pump the opposite side of which he is going to feed. This morning while doing so, blood was coming out of my nipple. I've been experiencing some general pain in that breast for the last day or two, but I can't tell if the blood is coming from a cracked nipple or from within my breast. When I saw the blood come out I became nauseous from the pain and threw up.

Should I call my OB? Is it ok for LO to eat from that side? Is pumped milk ok from that side if it has blood in it?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Blood in Milk

  • I have had blood in my milk and it is safe for LO. Never pain like that though.

  • The pain is what is worrisome, I would call.  In the mean time it's fine for LO to nurse from that side as long as you can handle it.
  • Thank you all for your responses. It seems as though the blood/pain were a one time occurrence. My breast is still a little sore, but not nearly as bad as it was, so I'm thinking it was a cracked nipple that caused the blood. I've been loading up on lanolin before each pumping session to try to ease the friction. I definitely plan on calling the doctor if it happens again.
