Tata Tuesday Chat - 8/5 with Lea Rivera Todaro (LClea)

Re: Tata Tuesday Chat - 8/5 with Lea Rivera Todaro (LClea)

  • Hi there! I have a 4 mo old. So far I have not gone back to work but I have been pumping from day one and have a massive stash (looking to donate some!). I have 2 questions:

    1. He is waking up later in the am and going to bed earlier in the evening. Am I still supposed to be worried about getting 8 or more feedings in a day? That is getting harder and harder. He is currently 19 lbs so I know he is gaining plenty.

    2. Pumping - I always pump after the first feeding in the am. Now I'm beginning to think I should just pump on the side he didn't eat from since it's still full. Say I pump right side only because he ate from the left. When he eats next should I give him the left side again?

    Many thanks!

  • Hello, I'm 21 weeks pregnant with my first. I know that I want to BF but feel pretty clueless about the whole thing. At what point in pregnancy should I be looking for lactation consultants and begin making preparations, other than the basic buying a pump, storage bags, etc.? TIA
  • AthenaNabi well it is more old wives tale then not but yes it has happened.  However, if you are going to be a stay at home mother then there isn't a huge reason why the baby has to take a bottle.  Also by the time they are 3 months old you can offer them a cup to hold on their own, it needs to have to handles or be easy to grasp -- either covered (with the non-spill piece taken out) or not covered.  Prior to 3 months you can often spoon feed them or cup feed them as well.  Introducing a bottle is completely up to you and your parenting decisions.
  • vgutierrez504 I would question whether your pump is working right.  Can you find a breastfeeding supply store or an IBCLC with a pump suction meter to test and evaluate it?  Also, if you are pumping right after a feeding session it would make sense to not see a lot on one side since the baby just ate and remember just because they look the same doesn't mean they are built the same.  One side always produces more.
  • I am going to be a first time mom in December and I plan to breastfeed.  Are there any items that are a MUST HAVE?  My insurance will cover a breast pump - but I have no idea of what else to purchase besides milk storage bags and nursing pads.
Married on October 20, 2012.  Began trying in January 2013.
RE appointment & testing December 2013 - February 2014= Unexplained IF, possible endometriosis
IUI#1- March 22 (100mg clomid, 75 mg of Bravelle, Ovidrel trigger) = BFP!!!

  • Thanks LClea! I was really getting stressed about it! Now I don't have to worry so much!
  • bowlwoman for more frequent pumping I would recommend either the Ameda Purely Yours, the Hygeia Q/Enjoye, or Medela Pump in Style.  The Freestyle doesn't have the power needed for a full time working mom.
  • 10 more minutes, Bumpies! Don't forget that we will be hosting this event next week at the same time :)

  • My son has a good latch once he is on, but getting there is excruciating! He seems to have a small mouth and sort of sucks my nipple into his mouth instead of opening wide, closing and then starting to nurse. Is there a way to teach him? I'm afraid I won't last!
  • Shortly after my DD was born (6/2012) I developed a lump with pain under my right arm.  It went away but came back again in June when my DD completely weaned just before her 2nd bday.  I asked my OB about it at my prenatal check up, she thought it was just ectopic breast tissue but she referred me to a breast center for an ultrasound to rule out anything serious.

Any experience with ectopic breast tissue?  Will it get worse when I start breastfeeding again?

  • Congratulations on your huge stash!  There are many women and some dad's out there who will gratefully take your milk.  If you haven't connected with Eats on Feetsn https://www.eatsonfeets.org/  I hope you do!

In regards to your questions if your baby is naturally sleeping longer and is gaining weight well then there is no reason to "force" him to eat 8 times a day.  As babies get older they are supposed to be able to get more food less frequently.  This is normal.

For pumping a single boob feeder...always feed him on the side you pumped.  So if at noon he ate on the left and you pumped the right.  Then his next feed he will eat on the right and you will pump the left.  Breastpumps are great machines but nothing is better at getting milk out than babies!
  • My 8 month old has begun biting. I've read where you should remove him from the breast when he is done eating but he uses me as his human paci and thats difficult when he's sucking for comfort. Also is 8 months old too old to spoil by allowing him to be held and nursed on demand? My husband says I'm doing it because he is our last child and I'm trying to hang on to the baby and not let go that our kids are growingup. I know that comes from his family who is pressuring me to wean him (they are not very supportive of breastfeeding) I like to say I'm more of an attachment parent but with all the pressure of those around me telling me I'm spoiling him I start to wonder. Our first daughter refused the breast and took a bottle, second self weened at 8 months to a bottle, and our son has never taken to a bottle.
  • drmh22 no time like the present!  I always recommend to my pregnant clients that they keep an IBCLC's number on speed dial and to put us in the top 25 people to alert that the baby has been born.  Like every other birth worker you want to know that the person coming into your home is knowledgeable, experienced and sensitive to your situation.  So make some phone calls find someone you like and let her/him know that you would like to have them meet with you post partum.
  • I'm exclusively pumping and can get about 24-30oz a day however LO is eating 3.5oz-5oz a feeding every 1.5-3 hours. Is that too much and is 1.5 hours too often? LO is 7 weeks 2 days old and I've worked with LC to calculate the 3.5oz. How much expressed breastmilk should I be feeding him and how often?
  • MICHELLEMERHAR you need a consult with an IBCLC who is experienced with tongue tie and oral structure.  There is no such thing as a small mouth and the initial latch should never be excruciating.  I am not saying that your child is tongue tied, but when I hear a mom use those words it does make me wonder what is going on inside the little one's mouth.

You can find IBCLCs at ILCA.org, IBLCE.org and I recommend checking out the Facebook group Tongue Tie Babies.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/tonguetiebabies/  Great resources there.
  • AllTheTeaInChina  I wouldn't call it ectopic, but it is most likely axillary breast tissue with mammary glands.  It should only present itself when you are engorged -- so those first few days and if you rapidly wean -- you may be uncomfortable.  Massage the area while feeding or pumping and cold compresses work well.
  • I have a 2 week old who has been doing great so far with breastfeeding, however my right nipple has recently started hurting every time he nurses. I've been making sure to position him right and checking that he isn't just latching onto the tip but nothing has worked so far and the pain is making me want to pump from that side instead of letting him nurse. Any advice?
  • Thank you everyone!  It looks like we have reached the end of our time.  I haven't typed this fast since my days as a secretary!  If you would like to continue any of our conversations please feel free to do so either via the Bump, Facebook, Twitter or you can email me directly at lea@mamimia.org.
  • Thanks for joining everyone, and thank you SO much to @LClea! See you next week for the second round of Tata Tuesdays!

  • Always is a good thing to scroll backwards...I missed a few :)
CandaceC1020  No there is nothing that is a must have for breastfeeding except at least one breast per child!  You may want to consider a breastfeeding pillow and some nursing bras but that is really it!

Congratulations on making it this far and almost reaching your goal!  850oz is amazing..
Yes it is possible to nurse just when you are together this early.  It isn't a guarantee but it is possible.  You have made it past the point where we really worry about milk supply so go for it.  If you notice your supply lowering too much you can always add in a pumping session.

I think my best advice is take your time...watch your supply and your daughter.  If you are happy with the way things are going keep doing it.  If not stop and adjust your plan.  Nothing says you have to make one plan and one plan only!

And yes the head bobbing could be completely normal...although I suspect you also have some oversupply (what with 850 oz in your freezer) and the bobbing may be her accommodating the faster flow.

@twolittledogs the answer is usually yes!  But every baby is different.  I thought I knew everything after breastfeeding my first for 3 years, but my second threw me the tongue tie curve ball.  I think what second and third and fourth mom's have easier is the knowledge that no matter how hard it might be RIGHT NOW it isn't forever and that it does get easier.
Thanks@ Luckily I now know the first 6 weeks are usually the hardest. And the witching hours, oh the witching hours!!

This is good to hear. Even after successfully fb my son for 16 months, doing it all again is so intimidating. Especially pumping. I feel like I never got it totally right.

@Lclea, I haven't read all of the comments so I hope I'm not duplicating, my insurance will cover a pump up to $300, between the Medela PISA and the Ameda. Which should I go for? I will be using it daily at work, so pumping at least twice a day there.

Have you tried different positions?  Are you sure his ear is in line with his shoulder and then straight down to his hip?

He's definitely laying straight, and I make sure to bring him to the breast when he opens up wide. I've done football, cradle, and cross-cradle; cradle and cross-cradle have hurt the least but its still painful. The only pain free "solution" right now is to pump from that side, but I'm worried it might affect my supply if I don't nurse him enough.
  • @AmyG* - Thank you so much, I'll definitely try that! Nursing him on the left side is easier, but I do make the effort with the right side and deal with the pain. I'll give a call to one of the LC at the hospital to see if I can go in sometime this week.
  • Awesome thank you! My first spoiled me--she was so easy to nurse--this little guy has been a bit of a challenge. Really appreciate the response and love what you're doing
  • I didn't make it to the hour of advice but lots if great info in here to read! Thanks @LClea! I'll try to make it with my questions next week!
