Uneven Head

My LO's back of the head is unevenly shaped from laying on the same side. I try to roll her onto the other side, but she she turns right back. I've tried using cushions to keep her on that side, but no luck. I do a few minutes of tummy time everyday, but she does not enjoy being on her stomach for very long. Is the misshapen head something that resolves itself once she gets better neck control and starts sitting upright? Any advice? She is 5 weeks old.

Re: Uneven Head

  • my little guy has an extremely flat spot on one side of his head. no matter what I try he always lays on that one spot. he is also getting a touch of torticollis so we are doing some stretches. I am terrified he will need a helmet. like seriously freaking out about it.

You could try this to see if it helps.

B has never hated anything more than he hates the tortle hat. it's pitiful really.
  • I am freaking out too @stephross88‌ . It guess it wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'll be trying everything to avoid the helmet! I wish I would have noticed her lopsided head earlier, but her bushy hair was hiding it.
  • My LO did not enjoy tummy time much initially so I started using the Boppy Noggin Nest Head support. I like it a lot and his head looks good to me (no flat spots). He has a wellness visit this week so we'll see if his pedi agrees
  • When do you see your pediatrician next? I'd let them know ASAP and request a physical therapy evaluation. All the repositioning in the world will not fix whatever underlying issue is causing this, and the sooner you get it addressed the better. Both my kids are in PT now for somethig similar. Good luck.

  • Just went to see the pediatrician at 6 weeks and my baby has torticollis from birth. I noticed because when she holds her head up and looks directly at me it is tilted to one side. This could lead us to plagiocephaly since the tilt causes her to favor one side when laying down. Does your baby's head tilt to one side? We have a physical therapy appointment scheduled but in the meantime the doc recommended we help her sleep on the other side using a towel rolled up in her crib. Definitely go to the pediatrician!
  • Thank you everyone. I'm waiting for the Dr to call me back tomorrow. She does appear to have a torticollis issue as well as one side of her forehead bulging out more than the other side. Trying to stay off google in the meantime.
