Question on dropping morning oversupply pump

Since DD was about 3 months old, I have pumped in the morning after she eats. Now that she is about a week away from turning 11 months and I have over 600oz in the freezer, I'm ready to drop this pumping session. I wake up very full and usually get 5oz from my right side after she eats on the left side.

What is the best way to drop this session? I don't think it's a good idea to just drop it, because I would then be going about 16 hours between feedings on the right side (not to mention how lop-sided I would be)! Should I pump like 3oz and try to gradually reduce it? If I do that, should I dump the milk since I won't be emptying my breast and so I wouldn't be getting the hind milk?

Re: Question on dropping morning oversupply pump

  • I did the same thing for many months! I pumped one side after DS ate the other, and I would get 6 oz in 5 minutes. Eventually I just decreased the amount of oz I pumped.

First day of weaning that session I stopped at 4 oz. I did that for two days then I went to 3 and so on until I got to one oz.

Honestly I don't think you need to dump it. When your LO gets to this milk in the rotation she won't be necessarily needing both fore and hind milk as an infant would.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! I think what I'll don is slowly cut back the right side pumping until my body gets use to 3oz. Then I'll start feeding her on the right and cut back left side by letting eat on the left after she finishes the right. Since I get about 5oz from each side in the morning, I guess I need to cut back the left too to keep them even. (I'm probably over thinking this but that's normal for me:)). I can't wait for the freedom of no morning pump!!
