Reflux in Toddlers (Updated)

Update 8/14: We had our GI appt today. Luckily, they think his new symptoms are the result of a summer virus or teething rather than the previous allergies rearing their ugly head again or new ones joining the party. Whew. Now I can sleep again!! Thanks to everyone who shared their stories. :)


Hi all! DS had all kinds of GI problems in early life (MSPI w/ bloody diapers, etc) but has been fine for awhile. Had a hard time transitioning to solids but now eats better than I do. He's been losing his mind during meals lately - asking for food and then just sobbing and won't/can't eat. I was chalking it up to toddlerhood, but yesterday he cried for hours and was so hungry but couldn't eat. He has no real words so couldn't tell me what was wrong, just laid on me and sobbed so I took him to the ped last night. I figured maybe teeth or ears, but they are sensing that it's reflux. Did anyone have a random reflux reappearance after months and months of healthy gut? We're giving him bland foods and some meds for now, but I'm looking for hope that this isn't forevermore... (Of course today he's totally fine - but only bland food. Doesn't have the meds yet because they're getting compounded and the pharmacy is backed up. Go figure)

    Are you doing yogurt or baby kefir? I'm a big fan of kefir to help fix yucky stomachs. It could take several weeks.

    @carrieb. He does have yogurt every day. It's one of his favorites. I hadn't heard of kefir until you brought it up. I just did some googling - is it a regular grocery store thing or a specialty thing?

    No advice just hoping the meds work. I can't even imagine what I would do if my toddler was crying like that when eating meals. I would of freaked out. 

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born. 

    6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

    They have kefir at my regular grocery store, but you can also find it at Whole Foods and organic stores.

    When I had a sinus infection last spring, I had to go on antibiotics and it wrecked my stomach. After a few weeks of kefir every day, it finally got better.
    IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

    He might have reflux but it sounds like IBS, Crohns type pain. Or he might have a food allergy. He also could be lactose intolerant does he have this Pain with yogurt milk?

    @luvboston We have been through the wringer with all kinds of allergies, but we honestly think he outgrew them. It's been 5 months of eating every food on earth (not kidding when I say he eats better than me) and then just all of a sudden 5 days of awfulness. The doc did tell us a virus is going around that is mild, and the last time he had a virus in March he did have a backslide with the associating pain with food, and today with the meds and just thinking a little about what he ate he was back to himself. I asked about some of the tummy stuff you mentioned at our most recent GI appt and she wasn't concerned with those since he gains weight well. So hopefully this will be shortlived!

    D had reflux as a baby and it went away for awhile and came back at around 18 months, his is not extreme but I notice the growling in his throat and he was waking a lot more in the middle of the night... they did not change his diet but he did go back on the medicine once a day
