And to add to my list of dietary concerns (diabetes and gastroparesis), I now have anemia with low blood pressure. I'm takjng an iron supplement, but after this evening's near-fainting episode, apparently I need to add more iron-rich foods to my diet (although I had burgers for dinner the past two nights!) and not skip my snacks and meals, even when my stomach is in pain. Hello, again, liquid meals; it's a good thing we're old, close friends.
I'm kind of freaked out--my doctor said my numbers were good, etc. at my appointment this morning. So, of course, my 1 hr after dinner test tonight was 200!!! Wth? I've never gone over 133. I had a half of a banana after dinner and forgot if had had half an orange earlier today. The only other new thing I had was steamed zucchini. I went out and took a walk after I got the reading:(.
It scared me because the doctor specifically said going over 200 was bad and could lead, in some rare cases, to "fetal demise"....
That's not even true! If that were to happen, it wouldn't be because of a few readings over 200. I see an endocrinologist and she says that it's rare to see serious complications with an A1c below 7, and based on your other numbers, there's no way it's that high. Your doc seriously needs to work on bedside manner.
Have you been counting carbs? That meal you described had at least 16 (patty) + 13 (1 C milk) + 15 (1/2 banana) + 40 (2 slices of normal wheat bread) = 84 grams of carbs!!! It's no wonder you were high at 1 hour! GDs are usually supposed to stick to the 30-45g mark for meals. My doc says 30, but I've seen higher allowances...

Ha. If that's the case, my kid is screwed. It's not... Your overall average would need to be pretty awful. Highs will happen. How quickly they can be treated or come down on their own is key.
Mine too! I actually come here and see all of your fasting numbers and they're so much better than mine and my doctor said I'm the most well controlled type 1 patient he's had in years... So, I know it's scary, but a few highs aren't going to hurt.
Oh my OB is super nice and an angel, she was just trying to caution me and being a hypochondriac with two previous miscarriages, my brain latched onto whatever she said which was probably a worst case scenario thing:/ Yea, I didn't realize how many carbs that chick'n patty had--I thought I had had one before but I was thinking of a boca burger. I've had that same meal with a different veg and berries and been fine before (it's more like a half cup of milk, usually)....live and learn! Thanks for talking me down:). I'll check out the site for when I'm trying new stuff! Feeling good today....
Just got back from the MFM. Despite having fasting ranging between low 100s through mid 80s, they were quite happy with my numbers over all and aren't too concerned (however, they will probably keep uping my insulin as she grows - oh goodie). Of course, Schroeder's growth is showing as average and I don't have to go back for three more weeks!
Also discovered last night and at lunch today, potatoes are no longer my friend. Or at least homemade mashed potaotes aren't. So sad.

Just fair warning you may get to a point where your numbers shoot up for no reason with previously safe meals.. You will have to cut stuff out once safe before
I am in a GD group and it happens a lot around 32-36 weeks.
Getting discouraged.... thought i was going to be able to do this diet controlled, but I was Given til Thursday to get my numbers down and it's not happening. Last Thursday was great! Highest B'S was 111 so I had high hopes, but I've only had a few in target range since. don't get me wrong, if i have to take meds, i'll take meds. I just thought i could make it work.
@heathera1979 . I completely understand. I was following the diet to the letter and was still not getting good numbers. They put me on meds and for a few days it was great and then my numbers went up again. They changed my dosage and same story. I have been trying all different types of breakfast ideas trying to get a better number. Even when I do high protein and around 15 carbs it still is not working. It is very frustrating but you just have to keep trying. I finally had a great fasting number this morning so Fx my post breakfast will be good too!
@Irobi13 and @heathera1979 sorry ya'll are struggling right now. Hope the docs figure something out for you! Ditto what PP's said, it's not your fault!!!!!!
Thanks for the support ladies! That's why I love this board!!!! DH is very supportive and sympathetic, but it's hard to truly understand the guilt involved when you're not solely responsible for the life/health of the LO.
Check In: How is the diet going? Any challenges that we can help out with? Any new recipes/ successes that you want to share? Rant/Vent about the lack of ice cream? This is day 2 on the oral meds the OB put me on to help me regulate my sugar levels. Doing well so far. I made this amazing unstuffed cabbage roll that was awesome and did not elevate my levels at all. https://www.budget101.com/dirt-cheap-dinners/424522-unstuffed-cabbage-rolls.html
I still eat ice cream LOL
QOTW: How has your family/SO reacted to your diagnosis (if it is new) and are they supportive? My father has type 2 diabetes so he was supportive. My wife has been supportive but it also scares her quite a bit b/c she doesn't want anything to happen to me or our girls. We have quite a few other issues going on right now so it is all a bit overwhelming for the both of us

We just had a BBQ at work for lunch and I ate a hamburger patty on a plate by itself, cuz that's all there was that I could have. Whose been there, done that???
@NavyFlyer - Most definitely been there and done that (even before GD due to other GI issues). When I know that there is going to be a pot luck or such at work, I always bring an emergency meal with me so that I can eat at least something that I know I will tolerate.
New people used to ask me about it and I would explain that I could either impose my dietary rules on the pot luck/cook out or just eat my own food.

@NavyFlyer been there. It was hard this weekend with the baby shower. Luckily there was some fruit and chicken salad that I ate without the bun and then to counter the low sugars I had I had some pasta salad and maybe a cupcake. Still did not help my low sugars.
I've been having trouble eating the last few days....my levels have been ok, kinda low but I'm just not hungry. I think I get nauseated from not eating enough and then that leads to not wanting to eat. Sigh. I wish there was some sort of shake or bar but the nutritionist sort of told me to avoid those.

Sounds like my usual experience at those types of functions. I always bring back-up snacks.
