Alcohol

I am 9 wks tomorrow (10 according to my lmp and ovulation pain but baby measures small at 8 wk ultrasound). Anyway, my husband and I were not necessarily "trying" but not necessarily preventing. We wanted a baby but did not want to stress over conceiving. Before I missed my period, there were several different times that we went out with friends for cocktails or wine. It just so happened to be a friends bday, a wedding, and a beach weekend with friends. After I got my positive test I panicked bc I had been drinking more than normal, during the first 2 weeks after conception. My dr told me not to worry bc if I had done damage, the zygote (at the time) most likely would have not been viable and that there was no placenta or umbilical cord then. But I can't help but panic. Does anyone have any experience or make this same mistake before they knew?! :(

  • I think you should listen to your doctor. It's fine to drink during the two week wait.
  • Listen to your doctor and try not to stress. It takes about two weeks (so the time between conception and your missed period) for the sperm and egg to come together as a blastocyst and then an embryo.

Plenty of people "drink until it's pink" (eg before a positive test) and go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies.
  • I did the same thing and from what I've read unless you drank more than 15 drinks a day or so you shoudnt have to worry about fetal alcohol syndrome or anything. I wouldn't fret about it until there is something to fret about.

You'll be ok, baby will be ok :)
  • A friend had gone out drinking AND smoking for her birthday directly prior (the weekend or 2 before) finding out they were pregnant. They hadn't planned that pregnancy and their son just turned a happy and healthy 3 years old. Trust your doctor.

  • Thanks everyone, can't help but feeling a little guilty but I appreciate the help!!
  • With #1, I had gone on a girls Birthday weekend (lots of drinking), right before my period was due. With #2, I had a toddler, working full time, it was the holidays and my dad was dying. I needed a drink(s) at the end of the day. Every day. Until my BFP.
With this one I had a nightly glass of wine until my BFP, before we ever shared a blood supply.

My boys are both perfectly fine :) Listen to your doctor and don't stress :)

Your doctor and the ladies are correct! Don't stress over it, try not too anyways!

  • Your doctor is definitely the person you should be listening to. Hey we all did things before we knew we were pregnant. I consumed an entire large bottle of wine with my hubby the day I found out I was pregnant. I hadnt even had a full day of a missed period yet, so how could I blame myself. just because you are trying to conceive doesn't mean your life stops. Enjoy it while you can. Relax your not alone

  • I had a glass of wine after I had my BFP, approved by my doctor. It was a special occasion. He also lets me have one cup of coffee per day.
During my first pregnancy, I was super strict and did everything right. I can't tell you how much fucking kale I ate. That ended in complete heartbreak and what it taught me is that none of this is under my control. I will be careful this time, but not extreme. Don't beat yourself up...

  • I drank my face off during my two week wait (boozy vacation), and I'm not worried. Baby doesn't share your blood at that point.

  • I (unknowingly) drank until about 6 weeks with my son and heavily one day around 4 weeks.  Otherwise it was just a glass of wine with dinner so nothing to even feel.  But until between 6-8 weeks they aren't attached to your blood supply at all so you can drink and nothing will happen.  Obviously once you know you should stop because that's the responsible thing to do, but if you didn't know it's not something you should worry about.  My son is a perfectly healthy baby who is physically about 3 months ahead of his age and right on track in all other areas.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

  • I did the same thing. I have been stressing too. I felt much more relieved when. My ob's nurse said it is very common to do this, she did it too. Her baby is now three and her scenario was the exact same as mine. She said you have to be drinking heavily throughout the entire pregnancy.
  • My husband and I were trying but my ovulation seemed off and I figured that we hadn't conceived since I ovulated so late, so a few days before I found out I was pregnant (around 4 weeks) I had a huge margarita and a few other frozen drinks over my birthday weekend. After I took the HPT, I stopped drinking. Don't worry if you drank before 4 weeks...I agree that you probably hadn't implanted yet anyway.
