Pregnant vegetarian.. Craving meat

I've been a vegetarian for a little over 2 years now and I've never had any issues with it since I made the switch over.. Now at 8 weeks I've begun craving a steak, or red meat in general like crazy. Everytime I see or smell a steak my mouth waters ! Have any vegetarian moms struggled with this ?

  • I'm not a vegetarian, but my doctor told me that cravings are usually a sign of deficiency in something (which makes sense since you haven't had meat in so long).  If you didn't make the change to be vegetarian for medical reasons, I'd say go for it! But take it easy (very small amounts) as your body is no longer used to it and it may backfire on you.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • I am not a vegetarian, but I had to add that this post made me have the first real craving I've had this pregnancy, so I had to run and get a roast beef sub. YUM!
  • Agreed with PP, usually cravings are a sign of deficiency in something.  Red meat could mean your body needs more protein, which you can get from other sources.  So you can try eating some protein rich foods and see if that curves your craving.  I don't eat beef but had a beef hot dog the other day because it just looked really yummy.  My reason for giving up beef was being traumatized against it by a book and an episode of 20/20.  Both of which I was able to forget about while I enjoyed the yummy, delicious hot dog.

  • I agree with everyone, it probably means you need more protein or iron. I say eat the meat :) but definitely start slow so your body doesn't retaliate. Maybe add some egg whites or use some protein powder to make smoothies before going for the meat.
  • Eat the meat!

I know several vegetarians and even a vegan who craved meat like crazy during pregnancy and they all ate it.  After they were done BFing (those that did) they resumed their old dietary habits and all is well.

  • If you're vegetarian for ethical reasons, I think that even eating 50% of the meat that most Americans eat is a step in the right direction! In our family we don't eat a lot of meat, and I was vegetarian for a while, and when I was starting it out I gave meat up gradually (eating it every other day or only on weekends/celebrations.) I figured that was at least a start!

If you're really craving it, have some! I don't think vegetarianism, for health or ethical reasons, needs to be a black or white thing... just eat LESS meat, of higher quality. I heard that red meat in particular has some compound that's really good for brain health and a small amount of red meat as part of a varied diet is very healthy.

If you don't want to do the meat, maybe it's actually iron and not protein your body is craving. Try kale and oatmeal, or buckwheat if you can get it. :)

You can also buy farm direct!  Supporting an ethical, small family farm in your area is a great way to balance you cravings/needs with you ethical standards.

  • Yes! Farm direct = higher quality meat from happier animals.
