Has anyone had to do the Glucose Screening test yet? I have to do mine tomorrow and was wondering what to expect.

Not this pregnancy but ive had them previously. You go to the lab and they give you a bottle of stuff to drink that tastes like sunkist with 6lbs of sugar mixed into it. Then you go to the waiting room and sit there for an hour twiddling your thumbs. After an hour the lab tech draws a few tubes of blood and you rush to eat some protein before you die of sugar shock.
    Ugh. That sounds pleasant.

UGH. I am not looking forward to it. I only drink water. I am worried the sweetness of the drink will make me sick to my stomach and I'll have to go back to take it again.

Hikerlady - You are lucky that you just ahve to test after every meal. I would much rather do that than drink some drink and wait and hour.

See id rather just drink the shit and get it over with. I would hate pricking my finger every meal for 2 weeks,

  • Im 5'11" and 296.6 at last weigh in. I had lost 20lb before this pregnancy due to going on insulin. I was hoping that i would lose weight in the beginning like i did with my daughter. But gained 5 lbs within 4 days lol.
  • @hikerlady‌ Nope doesnt hurt and im a big baby. I still flinch when I do it even tho I know it doesnt hurt lol. I even made dh do it the first time. This worked well since the needle can be adjusted to prick deeper or more shallow if that makes sense. He ended up pricking himself like 4 times before he got blood lol

  • I was 170 before I got pregnant (I'm 5'9) and the nausea made me lose about 22lbs :/. When you're pregnant depending on your BMI you should gain about 20-35 lbs. For me that means I need to gain back what I lost plus another 20 lbs. I don't know your BMI but I'll find a link where you can find out and post it :) it'll help you figure out what to gain

I don't want to thread hijack, because no one else has said anything about WW. But just in case anyone is considering it after your comments -
you cannot be a paying member of Weight Watchers and attend meetings while pregnant. It is against their company policy.  It's great to make healthy choices and keep track of calories while pregnant. All of our OBs want us to do that. And whatever method works for you, go for it.  But if you're paying for WW? Save your money!! I am still trying to eat healthy, especially since my husband is still going to our meeting and tracking points and I want to support him.  I am just sick and tired of tracking, so I'm taking my free pass out for 9 months.

Edited to fix quote levels...stupid html.

  • I am so irritated right now. I went to have my blood work done at a different lab than I usually go to. The one I go to doesn't do Maternit21 so I had to switch. There was so much construction on the highway that it took me 1/2 hour for a trip that should have taken 7 minutes. Then my GPS had me turn onto the wrong street and insisted my destination was on the left. Yup it was but due to the forest I could not drive through it to get to the buildings. GRRRR So back out to the highway I go to sit in traffic trying to go a few feet so I could turn into the medical park. I finally find the lab, go inside and fill out the paperwork. Then the woman tells me they close for lunch in a hour and cannot do the glucose screening because she needs an hour and a half. GRRRRR But the kicker was she proceeded to tell me I had to fast for the test as well. I ended up just having the Maternit21 test done and came back home frustrated. I did some extra research and discovered there are 2 tests, the glucose screening and the glucose tolerance test. Screening is 1 hour verses the 3 hour tolerance test. According to 3 different websites I discovered the 3 hour tolerance test is a fasting test however the screening, which is the one I was supposed to have done, is not. So back to the lab I go tomorrow morning bright and early.  #-o At least I had one test done so my trip was not a complete waste of time.

  • I am just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I had my NT scan tonight. The baby is developing normally. We were able to hear the heartbeat for the very first time. The tech printed us out a few pictures. The baby is looking more like a baby now!

  • All these post make me feel so much better.
Before I lost weight before TTC I weighed anywhere between 160 and 164. I went from 140 to that in the year I lived with my inlaws. I had lost some weight and got down to 152.
Ar my nurse appointment I was 152. At my 8 week appointment I weighed 156.I don`t think thats too bad.
My OB so far is pretty grwat and encouraging.

I went to planned parenthood for bc about two years ago. The woman I saw was horrible. She kept lecturing me on how overweight I was and how I needed to loose weight an that for my age and height I should be 120 pounds. Every doctor I have told that to since her has gotten pissed by that because I should be anywhere from 130 to 158 for my size.

  • Just checking in. I had my followup yesterday with the next doctor in the practice. I loved her. I have to say I really lucked out with such a fabulous group of doctors. I received the results of all my blood work. No gestational diabetes! Everything else came back normal. They did so many tests I don't remember half of them. I also received my results of Maternit21 - tested negative for all chromosomal abnormalities! DH could not make this appointment so I had my doctor write down the sex of the baby so we could open it after we both got home from work. I got into the car an instantly called DH to see if he was in a meeting or his office then drove to his work so we could open it. I am worse than a child on Christmas morning, I can't wait for things like that. It's a girl!!!

We are going to wait until our anatomy scan on 8/29 to reveal that info though. I am super excited!

  • I think paying attention to the number is NOT helpful. I think it is much more helpful to pay attention to what you are eating. For instance, if you are eating 80-100 grams of protein a day, and multiple servings of vegetables a day, you will have less space (and time!) for sugary carbs.

I recommend downloading a good fitness app that will let you record what you eat and calculate the nutirtional value for you. I have a windows phone--I use fitness pal, which is really user friendly. The only downside is that it has no pregnant option for daily percentages, so I had to research myself how much of everything to eat and compare it to a non-pregnant-or-lactating woman.

I'm not sure if I ever checked in on this thread before. I think I did. I'm 5'2 and started off weighing 165/167 when I got pregnant this time. I haven't gained and have lost a few. No one has mentioned to me about an early GD test though. Is that based on weight alone or previous GD in another pregnancy?

I've been trying to just eat a real foods diet as much as possible. It's really hard at the moment since my kitchen is down to the studs for a first floor renovation. I have my vitamix though, thank god.

It's so hard to get back in he groove too once you've eaten crappy for any length of time. I know it will make me feel better to eat better but one bite of processed stuff and it's a landslide for me.

@JKHope‌ the gestational diabetes test is offered to everyone between 24-28 weeks. The early test is offered to those deemed to be high risk. It is determined based on BMI and other risk factors. For example, I was told that because of my ethnicity and my BMI I would be considered higher risk. I declined the test because I understand statistical based healthcare decisions better than most medical personal (they telly don't have adequate statistical training which makes the ethical component of their recommendations suspect).
