Potty training question...

I was talking to a friend tonight and she asked if I started PT DD? I think my face looked like this. :-O I feel really dumb now thinking that I still had a little bit of time before we start that adventure. (For those that are mobile, DD is almost 16 months) . I know to start looking for signs that she is interested in using the potty, but besides that, what else? When did you start PT? TIA!

Re: Potty training question...

  • I started vaguely PTing her last summer, when she was about your LO's age, but it wasn't anything serious... Just introducing the concepts. We were spending a lot of time outdoors so I just let her go naked on the bottom and she developed an awareness of when she was going pee and we talked about it a lot, etc. Since then I've followed her lead and only done what's she's been ready for. She's only been serious about learning to use the potty since her 2nd birthday.

  • Yep. DS is SO not into it. He will occasionally tell me "I hafa go potty." But really, he's already gone. I think he just doesn't notice before he's actually gone that he has to go. I'm not all that worried about it.
Because you're mine, I walk the line....

  • 28 months. We did boot camp style over a long weekend and skipped pull ups. He did great. We talked about it for about a week before and be went to target to pick out his big boy underwear before we started.

16 months just sounds like extra work. I can't imagine ds2 (15 months) being ready anytime soon!

  • For DD we put the potty in the bathroom at about 12 months. We tried the 3DPT method with her at about 22 months. She did very well with it and was both day and night trained in very little time, especially in comparison to our DS.

We tried potty training DS at the same time using the same method, but he just wasn't ready until 2.5 and still is not night trained.

  • I think I bought a little potty and the seat that goes on our normal toilet when DS was like....just over a year?  But just to start the conversation; I wasn't expecting anything.  He actually was really interested in using them but I don't think he actually recognized when he had to go until 18 months+, and even now at 28 months, he still doesn't know sometimes (or isn't paying attention).  If he's naked he'll tell me usually though!

But we're actually going to get underwear today to try out :)  The last week or so he has been talking about how a friend of his as well as some kids in the gym daycare have underwear, so I figure we'll give it a try.

I don't think there's any harm in introducing the idea now, but yea...I wouldn't expect anything.
  • We got him a potty at 1 and just had it to sit on when he wanted to until around 3. 2 months before he turned 3, he just said "I want big boy underwear" so I put it on him and we haven't looked back. I'm a bg believer in the "they'll tell you when they're ready" school of thought.

  • With DS, I tried shy of 2.5 and it was a failure. It took a whole year before he was finally ready/willing.

With DD, she was ready after 2 and I went with it. I don't know if it was a girl thing, a personality thing, or just because she's the second kid and saw her brother using the potty regularly, but she was SO much easier.

  • DD is 23 months (I refuse to say her age in years because WTAF I have a two year old :(( ) and we have loosely started introducing concepts. We had a free standing potty but she didn't feel very secure on it. We got rid of that and instead got one that goes on the toilet. She feels much more comfortable on that even with her being up higher in the air.

We ask her if her diaper is dry if she wants to pee. Sometimes she does sometimes she doesn't. She said 'poo' the other day and pointed to her butt then pooped in the potty. I don't think we're anywhere close to getting ready to really attempt to PT, but I want her to understand the concepts and get used to the idea.

One more thing to add. I found out that PT at night and PT for the day are totally different beasts. Kids can be PT completely during the day, but still need a diaper at night because they can't hold it all night long. Something to keep in mind when you guys do start :) I always thought that PT meant you wore panties or underwear and never had a diaper on. That's not the case though, which is awesome for us because DD is still sleeping about 12-13hrs at night. She won't be holding it for that long for a while ;)

  • We are actually working on PT this summer because my son starts preschool next month. He's 3 so I just started putting him in underwearand sitting him on the potty every so often. Lots of accidents the first few days but now he's starting to just go sit on the potty when he's got to go.
Wait until they are ready so you aren't fighting a losing battle.
  • We did it last week. DD is 3 years and 3 months. Honestly--she was MORE than ready and because of that, she was completely trained in a couple of days. It took her about a day to actually catch on :)

  • Z is almost 2 (6 days!)

she will pee on the potty in the morning and before bath.

I just bough her a pack of big girl underwear yesterday and washed them and let her try on a pair. She loved them!
  • I was forced to try and PT Emily before age 3yrs because Preschool required them to be PT and it was a complete disaster. I mean... like, we went down like the Titanic. Ugh, it took over a year and she wasn't ready until she was nearly 4yrs. I wish I had backed-off, ditched Preschool, and just relaxed about it.

Nolan is 3yrs 2mos and still wears diapers.

I'm good with it, he's not ready and I'm not at all interested in repeating my mistakes with Emily.  He'll be ready when he's ready. :)

we had a small potty in her bathroom around 18 months.  We didn't actively train until 2 years a 3 months.  It only took her a couple weeks to day train.  I would say at your LO's age I wouldn't push it, wait til he is older.  the process doesn't take that long when they are a little bit older.

  • DS is 18mo and I probably won't attempt it until next summer when I'm off daily (work part time during the school year) so he'll be 2 1/2. Hopefully he'll be ready by then as it would be the most convenient but I've learned from others not to push it until their ready and it will be a lot easier.

  • We just started thinking about it with DD2.  If she asks to sit on the potty, she does.  I find it easier when they're older and want to do it.  My oldest was fully trained right at age 3.

  • We did little things to introduce the concept, had a potty chair out, had books about using the potty, but that was it until 2 1/2 when we made the jump to underwear.

I would also suggest having your dd watch you go - every time you go just say mommy's going pee on the potty! Yay! DS really wanted to do it because daddy did.
We actually already do that, not really for the intention of potty training but because she is always right up my behind LOL I can't tell you last time I used the bathroom in private.  :-/
