Silly Bra question.....

Ladies I am in need of a couple of new bras. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for them. I would like to be sized for the correct fit and for some room to grow. I would like them to be nursing ones too.

Please tell me where I can find all of this without spending $50-$75 on one bra. Thanks VS for your bras but time to move on to spending money in on other things.

I've always found that VS' bras are pretty cheap and all you're paying for is the name.

Nordstrom does excellent fittings, but you may not want to buy your bras there if you're looking for cheap ones.

ETA: I like Bravado's nursing bras, but I typically stick with a nursing cami for some time postpartum. I wear shirts that can be pulled up for nursing, and the cami covers my belly, and baby covers the boob. Voila!

I would love to just be able to do a cami and through a shirt over. But my girls need more support then that. Hence the bar and then the camp and shirt over that. Which I do now expect they are not nursing anything right now.

  • I went to motherhood maternity and was happy with the help. I first got an underwire which is great for going out in but needed relief and found some super comfy wireless nursing bras that are now my go to because I just don't care any more and need relief!

  • I have big ol boobs too, and while I'm nursing I still lived in just the nursing camis and a zipped up hoodie. I only ever had on a nursing bra when I went out. Hotmilk makes them in larger sizes and they've held up well for me. And they're pretty. :). Sometimes they're on zulily. Just shop around! I also like the website figleaves.com for my bras and swimwear!

  • Motherhood Maternity and Target have been recommended in the past but that's if you are within their sizes. I was bigger so I had to pay extra for good bras from Nordstrom or a specialty store.

I'm planning on buying nursing bras from Motherhood Maternity. They always have some sort of sale going on. You can always get fitted at an upscale department store or specialty bra store and then not buy anything from them.

  • Stupid question but how do you go without a bra when you are nursing? Don't you leak all over the place?
And how do nursing bras work? Do they have a front clasp or something?
    imageimage
  • Lele74Lele74 member
Yes, nursing bras/tanks have a clasp so the cup just folds down to show your boob.
I also like the bravado bras and nursing tanks. While I usually do everything on the cheap, I think just finding a great bra that supports you and is comfortable is worth the cost. I figured I'll be wearing these things daily for quite a while and I need to be comfortable. And getting someone to size you is really really helpful. I thought I was a C but I'm a DD now (in the brand of bra I have...)
Good luck in finding what you need! Bras are a pain!

Not everyone leaks. But you can put a breast pad in a cami just as easily as you can put one in a bra.

Some open with clasps where the strap meets the cup, others are stretchy and pull down. Just depends on what you buy.

It's recommended to avoid underwire nursing bras if you can, because the wire can put pressure on your milk ducts and can contribute to plugged ducts. Either way, make sure you have a good fitting before you buy. And know that your size may or may not change when baby arrives. :)

  • I was feeling suffocated by my bras lately, but after measuring twice, my measurements were still 38D.  I'm not falling out of my cups so I just bought $2 bra extenders for now.  Since this is my first time around, I'm not sure whether these gals are going to morph any more, so I'm going to try to make this work for at least another month.

  • Can you get by with an extender now?  I've been trained to fit bras at a department store and we're suppose to tell pregnant women to wait to buy nursing bras until after 36 weeks because it's hard to guess how much to go up in size until that point.

  • I guess I should go and get fitted eventually. I've always had a really small chest and barely filled a 32 A. Now I fill some of my bras and they feel tight on the loosest setting. I'm guess maybe I need a 34 A? And I've heard that a 34A is the same as a 32B? I dunno, having boobs this small can be really really frustrating.

  • I thought this was cool. Bookmarked this self-fitting info. so that I could measure myself and get a bra that fits well:

  • I mostly wore nursing tanks with my son b/c I preferred to have my tummy covered during the winter.  I really liked the bravado ones that Target carries (they are about $25/each).  I've heard great things about bravado nursing bras and probably will get one or two this time around.  You can often find them on the sale sites like Zulily.

A few things to keep in mind-  It can be a little hard to predict your size before your milk comes in- I'd actually suggest getting one or two sleep bras or tanks to get through the first couple of days and then go and buy a few bras once your milk is in.  My sister went from like a 34C to a 38 DDD or something crazy when her milk came in with her first.  I went up a full cup size  or so (so from a 36B to a 36C).  Underwire is not recommended for nursing moms (the wire can put added pressure on the breast and cause plugged ducts, which are not very fun).

I have three Maidenform bras from Target for my pregnancy bras and they are super comfy and were not crazy expensive (like $20 each).  It might be worth investing in a few regular bras to get through from now until you deliver so you aren't guessing at what your size will be once your milk comes in.

Have you found this to be pretty accurate? I tried this and I was a 30 D! Holy moly I wish. Oh and I also have shallow beasts after doing some more investigating. Lovely.

  • I just bought some new bras this weekend at Target. One was a nursing bra and it was $17 full price. The other two I bought were just regular bras in a bigger size that I got on clearance, about $8 each. Happy hunting!

I need to go try on some bras in my correct size based off this measurement to see what I think!

Me too. I've always felt like my a cup bras made it look like I had fat bubbles under my armpits. Maybe I'm just not getting all the breast tissue in a large enough cup. I told DH and he's like there is no way your a D. Thanks darling.

Hey!! Don't knock your knockers! Hollywood boobs are overrated, and whether yours are big or small, shallow or full, they can feed your baby and give you an awesome sense of empowerment. They're just one part of what makes you beautiful! :)

  • I have a couple of stupid questions.

    1. Are nursing bras/camis a must? Like "going to die without them?" I bought a bra that was bigger around because I was getting uncomfortable but I haven't had to go up a cup size yet. I'm still only a B...thank goodness. I figured I'd wait until baby arrives to get those kinds of things, should I need them. Hopefully I will be able to nurse but I'm a FTM and my mom had tons of issues. Not sure if that's genetic. Sorry, I'm rambling now.

    2. Where can I get an extender? I've looked and I can't find one! :(
  • @Firemanswife11‌ I have no answers to your first question as I'm a FTM also. But I got my extenders at motherhood maternity. You should be able to find them at Walmart or target also.

    1. I love nursing camis because I prefer to wear stretchy shirts that can be pulled up from the bottom, and to unsnap and pull down the cup of the cami, making a little boob window. Baby in front of boob and discreet nursing is easy. I also nurse by just pulling the necks or some shirts down, but if this isn't an option (not stretchy enough), I don't want my belly to show. I would FAR rather show a boob to strangers than my pudgy belly. :P

I also frequently wore open sweaters over my camis instead of shirts, and it just made nursing so easy. You can survive without them of course, but I wouldn't want to! Hehe

Also, your mom's breastfeeding challenges are not genetic. The only challenge that is really potentially genetic is an extremely rare condition called IGT. That doesn't mean you won't face your own or even the same challenges, but your mom's experience will not have an effect on yours. :)

    2. I think you can get cheap ones at Target, and you can buy them at department stores.

  • Since nobody with truly giant nursing boobs has commented yet (I went from a 34DD to an H/I last time. Yep. Those sizes exist.) I'll just throw out a fee suggestions:
-waiting to get properly measured for a nursing bra is a good idea. Have some camis/the Bravado half-tank bras on hand for early days.
    - steer clear of Motherhood etc. if you're huge. They won't have your size. Good brands are Elomi, Anita, Cake Lingerie, Le Mystere. Nordstrom carries some, but I found it easiest to just order every bra in my size from Amazon (thanks, Prime) and decide from the comfort of home.
    - I didn't find the bravado tanks supportive enough, but LOVED my Glamourmom tanks. They had a full bra built in, and were so comfy.
    - thankfully I never had a problem with clogged ducts or mastitis, and was able to wear underwire without issue. The key is to have a well-fitting bra so it doesn't compress your breast tissue. My little sister even wears minimizers.
-which leads me to my last point: you can have a tailor or boutique lingerie store convert most any bra to nursing. Don't feel that you need to buy nursing bras if you stay the same size- you can just convert a few from your stash and save money.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I found little support (hehe) out there for the small band size-large cup size contingent, and would love to help others avoid my trial-and-error process.
  • @firemanswife11   I have gotten extenders at Motherhood and also at Walmart (I think in the fabric/craft section).  I've also seen them at a local dollar store before.  Also, my mom was unable to BF me or my brothers, but I have been able to BF my first two kids without problem.  Don't worry about it...and if you do have an issue, there are a lot more opportunities to get help, resources and support with BFing than our mom's would have had.

Thanks! My boobs really get me down. I have always wanted a boob job. They are just so small and flat. It's impossible to wear cute low cut stuff because it's always took big and just hangs off me.

I went to Dillards and they had 2 brands carrying size 30D. I tried on a couple including a 30C and and the 30D were the most comfortable. I don't have amazing cleavage or anything and I still don't think I could fit into a D with big round cups, but the brand I got- Jasmine & Ginger- has these low wide sort of cups, so anyone with boobs that shape might want to check them out.

I found this really interesting. It says I'm a 30 F. I never ever would have tried that size. I'll have to see how it does when I'm ready to buy new bras again. I'm wearing completely soft ones now because I was tired of trying on fitted ones and nothing fitting right. And my fitted ones from prepregnancy never really fit right either...

This site is awesome too. I've been neck deep in reading this stuff ever since @Emerald27 posted that link. It is crazy how improperly we are taught to find our bra size. No wonder my bras were always so uncomfortable and slipping off my shoulders all the time and riding up in the front. It was especially enlightening to see pics on this site: https://www.brabandproject.com/ you can search your size and see people who actually wear that size.
