Driving into Canada question

We are going to Niagra falls in 2 weeks and are driving. My husband and I both have passports and (hopefully) from my research, we just need LO's birth certificate. My mom and sister have passport cards. Online, I read that to get into canada you need a passport or birth certificate but in order to get back into the US, you need a passport/passport card. Nothing is mentioned about using the card to get into Canada. Should they take both the passport card and birth certificate? Ugh it's so confusing. We don't want to get to the border and not be let in.

We're going to Whistler in a few weeks and were told that a birth certificate will work both ways if traveling by car. If it was a plane we would have needed to get DS a passport.

That's what's it's like for us going into the US too. I love whistler! Such a fun little community! The sea to sky highway is so beautiful :)

  • Also a Canadian. I was getting photos done at Walmart and noticed they had a poster for baby passport photos. I don't know how accurate this is, but the photographer working told me that babies now require a passport.

Money grab? Maybe. I mean how accurate is that photo going to be in 6 months, 1 year, etc. Especially when we now have 10 year passports?

I've looked at the websites and it is confusing there too. Doesn't just say here is what you need.
  • I just came back from Canada yesterday and all we needed to get out/into the country was her birth certificate :).
  • I just came back from Canada yesterday as well and all we needed was both boys birth certificates but adults need passports or enhanced liscense.

I'm sure going back in you'll be ok with just your passport....that's your best bet for both ways! Also just mske sure you have your hotel information, and be confident on where your going, how long your staying etc...it'll make your life easier! Oh and how much money you have on you should be known. Now I am Canadian and I cross into the states often for shopping or vacation and vacation they always ask for that info and are pOd if you don't have that info on you or are acting flustered! Good luck :)

I'm Canadian and still have yet to do maid of the mist. The Canadian side is amazing!
  • Thanks! This is my 4th time. We are staying at great wolf lodge. They are amazing. If you have never stayed at one, try to. It won't be as fun for me this time with the LO but they said I can do all the stuff with the baby. The maid of the mist has an indoor viewing area and most everything is stroller accessible
  • What @Mapleme‌ said - under 15 traveling by land or sea OK with birth certificate. For travel by air all ages need passport. I just researched (and did) this last week for taking LO to Canada for a day trip. And permission letter from other parent if only one is accompanying.

I had no trouble at all though was at a mellower crossing. Rules are same at all crossings though tone of interaction with guards may not be.

    Enjoy your trip!!

Passports trump everything else, so if adults have one, bring it!! Makes me feel more comfortable knowing I won't have any problems, coming or going. (Im Cdn but we often fly out of the States - Buffalo or Detroit - when going places.)

Isn't travel between us and Canada the specific purpose the passport cards were made for?

I have no idea. They got them last year to go on a cruise. We just want to be sure.
