wow. so i have a busy weekend and don't log in till nearly 11pm last night and this is what i miss. i only made it to page 6 before i really had to go to bed. what the actual fuck.
1. i think the gender/sex thing has been beaten into the ground, so anyone who still wants to claim they "believe differently" and that WE'RE being intolerant can seriously GTFO now. i'm intolerant of your intolerance.
2. apologizing for someone being offended by something you said is not an apology. if you're not sorry for what you said, you're putting the responsibility for YOUR actions on the person you offended. nope nope nope.
3. i'm not even going to comment on aggiewhatever because, judging by the few run-ins i've had with her, i believe she's one of those unfortunate trolls who trolls honestly (i.e., yes she's doing it to piss people off but she also actually believes what she's saying), and no amount of flaming will ever change that. it's a large board so i highly doubt she'll ever be completely ignored, but i'm hoping that she'll get bored and move on at some point. i also feel sorry for her children. at best, she's raising more bigoted assholes. at worst...well, i won't go into that.

@aditigirl Oh, are you expecting in January 2015?
You really were determined to win "worst bumpie award" tonight.
This is a public board. You don't have to be due in January to be a part of this board. Obviously other people talked about how we are glad she posts here earlier in the conversation.
This post is a shit show. Expect people from all over the bump to come start posting soon and flaming people. Especially Parenting.
@aditigirl Big/Bug Hugs. I'm sorry.
If this board is for anyone to post in, the why having it labeled Jan 15? Why wouldn't it be numbered or have some random name? The intent is for women planning to give birth in jan 15 to all be on the same board. I will give those who are due in late dec or early feb may lurk and occasionally post because jan 15 is still a possibility.
@AggieMom0809 Hey so tell me, when did you choose to be straight?
Also,
@kmg06d you and your shitty non-apology can GTFO.
When I chose to start dating. When did the genetic studies (funded by many glbt groups) change to support your opinion. All of their data has shown that there is no genetic difference between them and heterosexually oriented people. If nothing else it's morally wrong, but I will leave that to your creator to decide.

No, this board is for women who were and are due in January of 2015. The BMBs aren't deleted once everyone gives birth and they would still be here if somehow everyone expecting in the whole month (god forbid) suffered losses and somehow there wasn't a community planning births for that time frame.
Also, plenty of women post in BMBs who aren't expecting in that month when threads become shit shows (like this one), or to support bumpie friends who have a BFP in different months or who have a BFP while they themselves are still trying for it. Contrary to popular belief, there is support on these boards when women at least try to understand the changing world we live in and use respect instead of resorting to name calling and "Why are you here? You don't belong here!" techniques.
So how does the transgendered "title(?)" Work within sports. Me and my husband were having an honest discussion about this one day. He is a race director. So we were talking about how in order to be sensitive and in general understanding if their gender identity you are suppose to refer to whatever gender they identity with. But with sports its not that easy. If they were born male then they would have to be counted as male. But if it is a trans who has had sexual reassignment surgery, and especially if its male to female, they have had the majority of their sex specific hormones reduced and replaced with the opposite hormone. But do male to female post operative people still make more testosterone than the average female? And so do you count them in the women's results or the men's results? Its all really a Grey area in sports.
Idk if anyone remembers the (I guess intersexed) Olympic runner who got first place and shattered records as an 18 year old. She had testes on the inside and never knew. And she produced a way larger amount of testosterone than average females. I think they let her keep her medal and stuff, but can't remember what happens elsewise. And I can't remember her name. I'll have to ask my husband later.
I didn't see this answered earlier--and I don't Bump on the weekends, so I apologize for not hitting on this before.
It depends. It depends on the level of athletics. So, if your husband is a race director for marathons and Jane Doe wants to enter and she's a trans* woman or had a sex change from being a man, then she is fine to run as a female. When it gets grey is when it's at an elite level, and then there are very specific rules about what she needs (or he needs, but it's much less common in men's sports) to do to qualify.
I believe the IOC requires that the person has had a sex change (to remove sex organs and therefore testosterone-producing organs) at least two years before and must be on testosterone-suppressing drugs (which most M-t-F people use anyway). And I believe this depends on the sport.
Why and how do I know this? I played rugby and there was a woman on another team who used to be a man. She was not permitted to play on the A-side because rugby is such a physical sport and she was--and is--a large woman with a great deal of strength. So there's an example of it depending on the sport.
Caster Semenya is the runner you're referring to. She was "cleared" and is able to continue to compete in women's events. Here are a bunch of articles that discuss the controversy--and also some that detail sex and gender and how and why so many people use them incorrectly.
@MarxieVonTrapp my husband hasn't had to deal with it yet. And I think in our city it possibly would only be an issue for a Boston qualifying course. I told him he should contact the USATF about it. I'll pass on the info. Thanks! He thought the statute of limitations for someone entering something after SRS was like 5 years, that way they'd be sure to miss a world championship. But maybe that was steroids he was talking about
Same reason people use all these damn acronyms. Personally it annoys the crap out of me but I'm not going to go around telling other people how to write their posts.
It seems to me that until you are told otherwise the gender that typically matches the anatomical sex is almost always assigned. Of course how tightly parents stick to traditional gender norms/roles varies. There are only a few rare cases I can think of where parents did not reveal the sex. I am not aware of any parents assigning the opposite gender. So while we are are identifying the anatomical sex a gender is being assigned (and perhaps revealed). To me the semantics don't seem particularly important because I don't think it necessarily brings awareness to transgender issues (which I do think are important). I suppose some will disagree with me there. I just have never been under the impression that people who use gender incorrectly are unaware of what it means to be transgendered. Perhaps I am mistaken about that though.

I was browsing the baby section at Target this weekend and, much to my dismay, found that all of the super gendered clothes, for both genders, were freaking adorable. I've
concluded that regardless of the sex of my child and regardless of the gender of my child, I really hope that they strongly identify with one or the other gender so that I can buy super cutesy gendered clothes for them.

Yup thats my daughter very much a girl and yup shes picking out a boys toy to play with and yup she is wearing boys aviator camo cargo capris.. Why cargo? Bc she needs the pockets to fit her cars in. And shes is beautiful in boys or girls clothes playing with whateve she likes
@aditigirl Oh, are you expecting in January 2015?
I was. I had a loss about a month ago. Thanks for being an asshole, though.
Fuck you.
Then you would be the troll. Why would you still be here?
So I know I'm a mod who has to uphold the rules and if I get reported, another mod is free to chastise me, but I can't let this one go. (I also don't go here. OH NO!)
Fuck. You. How dare you throw someone's loss in their face like that, you pathetic excuse for a human being?
I'm not even going to get into the rest of it because your head is so far up your ass that you will never be able to understand why you are wrong or why you are setting yourself and your children to be on the wrong side of history, but don't you ever use someone's loss as a weapon against them. That's so fucked up, I honestly question how your parents raised you to be such a heartless piece of trash.
Ncc!!! Come post on this board more please!!!

I could very well be incorrect on the timing, so he should probably check. But again, I'd imagine it only affects elite runners--even though qualifying for Boston is super hard, I don't know if the sex and gender and trans* status of runners would affect the outcomes. When he does find out, please share.

Those do not look like boy pants unless you bought them many sizes too small. Girls capris have cargo pockets on them too. For one, he body language shows she's not a fan of the one she's next to. Two, I'm sure this was just set up to prove your point. Three, those are not just for boys. They are Legos, designed for both girls and boys. Yes they do now make lego friends which is more girl oriented, but star wars (a princess movie) and rescue team sets are gender neutral.
Everyone brings up good points!! I forgot to realize that if I find out if my child is male or female I'd be burdened with just pink or blue... boo lol

The only reason I say it might be an issue with Boston qualifying is because there are different qualifying times for males/females. But it could also be something that the BAA deals with more frequently and has a solution for on its own.
It seems to me that until you are told otherwise the gender that typically matches the anatomical sex is almost always assigned. Of course how tightly parents stick to traditional gender norms/roles varies. There are only a few rare cases I can think of where parents did not reveal the sex. Perhaps I am mistaken about that though.
(Insert head-desk or face-palm picture.)
- Gender identity and expression have little to do with biological sex. It is a sliding scale of masculinity and femininity. This changes for every person and sometimes multiple times a day. (The video I posted on page two explains this fantastically).
- If a child is intersex the parents will take a guess and assign a gender.
- There are more genders than male/female/trans. Way more. Gender is fluid and based on each person.
- This isn't just a "transgender" issue. The issue isn't people not understanding what it means up be transgender, it is that people don't understand gender.
- Just because you THINK you aren't causing harm by using a word, doesn't mean you aren't. This argument is not just about a word. When you use it incorrectly you are stating that you don't understand there is a difference between sex and gender. If you don't understand there is a difference, you treat a child who doesn't fit into gender norms like they are different and there is something wrong with them. Even if you don't realize you do it. The child then grows up depressed because they think there is something wrong with them fundamentally. Depression and suicide rates for people who don't fit "gender norms" are skyrocketed. (You being general, not actually you)
What percentage of people experience gender dysphoria? I know gender and sex are not always linked, but my understanding was that in MOST cases gender identity and anatomical sex match which to me indicates they are related in some capacity.
I think that the framework that is set up in society is more of a view that gender as binary- male/female and after the anatomical sex is determined gender is assigned in this framework. We have boys and girls dressed in gender specific to gender neutral clothing. We pick appropriate hairstyles so that gender and anatomical sex match. This is despite the fact that our children have not yet told us (or developed I suppose) a gender identity. Since not all individuals have a gender identity that matches their anatomical sex don't we all take a guess and assign a gender in this binary framework? This isn't limited to parents of intersex children. Of course there have been a few people in the news that are exceptions and do not raise their children with any gender (keeping their anatomical sex a secret).
IMO using the term "gender" correctly does not do anything to change the notion of the binary view of gender. It may demonstrate that the person understands that sex and gender so not always match, but it doesn't convey a fluidity of gender as you describe.
We will have to agree to disagree, but when the term "gender" is used interchangeably with "sex" I don't think it can be assumed that a person doesn't understand that sex and gender don't always match. So if a person uses the terms sex and gender interchangeably (and FWIW I don't), but does understand the difference, how does that impact how they treat children who don't fit into typical gender norms?
I have always considered what you are calling "gender expression" as something fluid and more variable, but also something separate from gender identity. I am not familiar with gender identity as being as fluid as you describe, but that is interesting.

Yep. I'm hoping people will decide it's time to walk away. We're getting nowhere with the discussion, and people are going end up getting themselves into more trouble than this thread is worth.
@BackseatDriver The video I posted is a really great tool. Sam explains everything really well. I feel like my points just get lost in here.
- not everyone who has a different gender identity than their biological sex has gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is the emotional distress that can be caused by having a different identity than your biological sex.
- have you ever heard the term metrosexual? Or tomboy? Those are terms used to describe people who dont fit the norms. They are usually talked about in a scornful manner.
- as a society we are terrible at gender socialization of our children. I discussed this a few pages back. I would raise a gender X baby if I had the support.
-identity and expression are different! Sorry if I didnt make that clear.
- both gender identity and expression change not only from person to person, but culturally and over time. Which makes it very fluid.
I am not able to watch now , but I will later. Does it discuss and give examples of the fluidity of gender identity rather than just expression? I'm interested to learn more about that.
FWIW I don't find tomboy or metrosexual to be negative terms. Tomboys in particular don't seem to be talked about negatively IME.
I do think it is important to understand the concepts of gender and sex. I feel like most people are aware that sex and gender identity do not always match. Perhaps they don't know how common it is. I do wonder if people who don't seem to know the difference between the terms simply don't have a term for for the concept of gender identity.
More importantly though I think it is important not to stigmatize characteristics that are outside the norm (in general).

Honest question for the mods. (this may be wishful thinking) @ICarriedAWatermelon Would @AggieMom0809 continuing to bring up someone's loss to call them a troll be a violation of TOS?
I asked a question. They were calling me a troll and I want to know why I would be if they are the ones who are no longer pregnant and still posting just to get a rise out of people. I've personally had losses myself and wouldn't be hanging around a board to be a "Debbie downer" if I was no longer pregnant.

You've been quoted enough times on that gem that it should be sufficient enough to demonstrate which comment nearly the entire board is referring to.
As for the second comment... Literally any comment I've made "isn't worse."
Let it go and move on. You've already been warned. Comments such as these perpetuate the drama and are unnecessarily antagonistic. If you have further problems with our moderation, please take them to me or @Lady Xaverian directly instead of involving the entire board.
I know which comment you are referring to. My question was to where I was in violation any more so than those who were attacking me and my beliefs. I am by far not the worst of this group. I only asked an honest question that I never got an answer to, just bashed for being insensitive. I didn't say anything I wouldn't have said in person.

Not sure what would qualify as unacceptable? Make sure you can answer NO to these questions about your post:
• Does this post put down or attack another user?
Any communication in the forums, even those expressing disagreement or opinions must be delivered in a manner that is respectful toward other users (ask for support, answer a question, further the discussion, etc).
• Is this post malicious in any way?
Regardless of intent, posts that contain any mean-spirited content may be removed and the poster may be banned.
• Is this post inflammatory?
Posts that contain any hint of maliciousness or provocation of users to gain attention may be removed.
If you answered YES to one or more, the post is not appropriate for The Bump forums and should not be posted.
If for any reason you are suspected of being malicious towards a user or group, there will be consequences that may eventually, if not automatically, lead to banning from the community.
The Bump administrators and volunteer moderators reserve the right to remove anything or any user we deem inappropriate or malicious at our own discretion."
