Those of you with supply issues...

How did you discover it? We've had no previous supply issues, but for the last few days DS has been getting super fussy after about 5 minutes nursing. He pulls away and starts crying. Today I tried to squeeze out some milk when he pulled away and nothing came out. I'm going to be partially weaning soon before I head back to work in late August anyway.

Sound like a supply issue?

Re: Those of you with supply issues...

  • My Isabella does that when there is no more milk- usually during evening feedings. I discovered I have a supply issue b/c baby was not growing. Pedi suggested us to supplement. I don't supplement in the morning b/c I have enough milk and baby wouldn't eat from the bottle, but I do in the afternoon and evening. She usually eats only what She needs, sometimes the whole bottle, sometimes half or less.

  • We discovered it very early, when DS went in for his 2 week check up and he had lost more weight. That, plus a constant fussiness, equals baby not getting enough to eat. And I've been battling it ever since. Most days are fine, and I pump a lot and take supplements and drink gallons of water. We still occasionally need to supplement about 4 ounces a day when needed.

  • Could be supply issue or could just be baby getting distracted or gassy, my LO was doing that when we were on vacay but has been fine since we got back. She was also doing it with bottles which is how I figured out it wasn't a supply issue.

Sometimes mine gets fussy early in a feeding if he's gotten a gas bubble.  He squirms, pops on and off several time, and swats with his hands.  I usually can get him to settle if I sit him up and get a big burp out of him.  Then we try again, and if he continues to fuss at the boob, I switch sides.

ETA I don't have experience with a supply issue, but I have experienced a similar fussiness.  He also gets really irritable at the boob before a 'leap' or growth spurt.
  • This was happening with a loss in weight. We supplemented but I found after bf'ing for 20 minutes on each side LO would still take in a 4 oz bottle of formula. Pumping after each feed did not seem to increase supply as this routine happened every day!

Thanks for the help! DS is a tank, so after hearing from you all, I don't think it is a supply issue. I do hear him swallow, but it seems to take several more "drags" before he swallows. He goes for his four month check up soon..his weight will probably tell us a lot!

  • O had been getting fussy at night. My parents were here this past weekend aND asked when we'd start food. We are Italian and we're started on past in a with chicken broth at 2 months.. eating solids/from table by 6 months. So HD has been all over me to start her on past in a and cereal. We start tomorrow. I know she gets plenty, but acts like she doesnt, hopefully she is more satisfied after! She's a supported sitter a d 4 weeks Friday.

My pedi considers my supply to be low because DS doesn't gain as much as she would like him to on my milk alone, though he is gaining and some people might consider it to be enough (he gains .5 oz a day). That's how I "discovered" it--the pedi suggested I supplement with some formula. With 2-4 oz of formula a day his weight gain is around 1 oz a day.

Mine does get fussy on the boob when it "runs out". I switch sides and all is well. (DS is a double sided eater and often takes each breast twice at feedings.)
