Have you dealt with a yeast rash on baby?

We took DS to the doctor Friday afternoon for a rash that I was pretty sure was a yeast infection. They gave him prescription Nystatin to apply 3 times a day.
So it's been 48+ hours of medication & the rash just seems to be getting worse. I'm not using wipes, just water & a cloth.

What else can I do! Does it usually get worse before it gets better? It hurts me just looking at the poor baby.

  • DD supposedly had a very small one.

Do you use disposible or cloth diapers? If cloth, you need to treat it too. Keep baby as dry as possible. Change often and make sure to dry after each change. Air time can help, diaper free if you're able.

  • We have also had a couple...naked time in the pack n play a couple times a day helps. Even if they poop...it's easy to clean the pack n play. If it doesn't get better though in by tomorrow I would call the pedi back. The medication should clear it up. Maybe it's a reaction to the diaper..
  • We did open a box of little snugglers this week & we've been using little movers. But I used to use Little Snugglers with no problem. I think I'll call his doctor in the morning & ask. My boyfriend took him Friday while I was at work & didn't think to ask how long it should take.
I'm not going to work tomorrow so maybe I'll put him in the pack n play naked for a while.
  • DD has / had a yeast infection after going off antibiotics for an ear infection.  Regular over-the-counter anti-fungal cream wasn't working, so they finally gave her a prescription for Nystatin.  For her Nystatin seemed to make the infection magically go away overnight, but the doctor said to give it at least three days to clear and to be sure and follow through with applying it 3-4 times / day for at least 10 days.

If it's really bad I'd say it's ok to add one extra dose to 4 times / day and make sure you're keeping it really dry down there and changing diapers often.  Also don't use any other creams but the Nystatin - even regular diaper cream.

    Good luck!

  • When she had one, the doctor prescribed her nystatin cream as well she said to alternate between a&d and the cream. Try to change her as soon as she wets her diapers, and if you use any wipes or the cloth and water, try to fan her bottom dry before putting anything on and closing the diaper. I hope it gets better.
  • If it makes you feel better, it took L almost a week of continued used of miconazole to clear up. I think it's because it's so hot and humid here. My doctor wasn't concerned that it took that long.

  • Willa had a pretty bad one and the doc suggested nakey baby and cloth to sleep in at night. She also has an ammonia burn from urine. I guess she was in diapers too long at night :( Anyway, we got a cream and it cleared it up in 2 days. It was nystatin too but he suggested gynelotrimin also.

Very hot & humid here also. He's not outside very much though.
  • My sister put yogurt on dd and it looked better within 24 hours.
  • Someone also suggested to me baking soda in the tub. Which did help. Also, if you are not doing this already, no wipes or soap. Wet wash cloth only on the bum. And coconut oil has natural anti-fungal properties...so it's good to alternate with that.
  • Also, the PA at my doctors office asked if I used baby powder. I personally don't on her, but he recommended it so that it would help keep everything dry. You just want to be careful not to get it in the air where she could inhale it (or you if you have asthma). You could alternate it for the changes where the cream isn't used. Just throwing it out there.

I usually use corn starch for diaper rashes & my boyfriend said they told him not to use it right now... I thought it would help keep it drier but what do I know.

@txmom13‌ Any kind of yogurt? I have Activia in the fridge. How long do you leave it on?
  • She said just no flavor/fruit. She used it for all of her kids. We just put it on with each diaper change. Thin layer - and be cold feels good to them.
  • DD got a really bad one after taking medication for a UTI.  She had to take medication and anti-fungal cream.  Her doctor recommended cutting off the elastic parts of her diapers, so they would breathe.  I also had her sit in her empty bath tub in the living room without a diaper on.  Diapers make it really hard for the yeast infection to heal because they keep them hot and wet.

  • We didn't have yeast diaper rash but best thing was air. I also would use hair drier on cool for a few mins after diaper changes before I put ointment on. Just make sure the hair dryer true has cool option. Sometimes cool is still too warm if it's an old dryer.
