Kindergarten question ** update**

So, my DS has his first day of kindy tomorrow. We do staggered entry here so he will only go one day this week ( tomorrow) and then on Friday we go for an hour to "meet the teacher." My question is this, do I mention to the teacher tomorrow that he is an IEP student or let tomorrow just be and mention it Friday, or do I need to mention this at all and she will just know? I don't want to be overbearing, but I want to start out the year right with knowledge all around. **update** So, the sped resource teacher had already been in contact with his teacher about some accommodations for him and she has his IEP. She also told me she has a background in sped. Yay so far! Whew!

Re: Kindergarten question ** update**

  • His primary teacher should be aware of his IEP and most likely is already aware of what it entails. Of course you can touch base with her about it but hopefully it won't be necessary.

  • Take a copy of the IEP with you, in case the teacher doesn't have it. You would be amazed at how often that occurs.
  • Thanks so much. So it sounds like she will already be aware of the IEP. I was not sure if they got them right away or after some time. I feel like I want it give her a novel about him!
  • I have heard of parents making a "meet the child" book from a presentation folder with a photo of the child, likes and dislikes, and a brief synopsis of the relevant parts of the IEP (I.e. list of classroom accommodations and modifications on single page), parent contact information, and other information that is helpful when working with the child.

This is great thank you! So, I think I will take a copy of his IEP with me and this guide. I feel likw if I were the teacher I would be appreciative of the extra information.

I'm a teacher. When I get my class list, it'll note 504, SPEd, at risk, OHI, etc. But it's not specific. I don't always have the IEp prior to school starting, ESP a new student...last year, was the first year that I got a folder with information (Cystic fibrosis) and that was really appreciated. I could read it before school started but in my own time. It's hard to take verbal notes during meet the teacher when so many people are coming at you.

  • As a teacher, I also note that there is many times room/classroom shifts up until the very start of school--especially with new registration :)

  • Well, I am hoping since he is already in the system from being in public prek last year that they will have his IEP and notes from his prek teacher very quickly. It's nice to get input from teachers so I will definitely prepare a folder of info to hand in. Thanks so much y'all!
