The formula post got me thinking...

For those of you doing 3 meals a day, what exactly does that consist of? We offer purées 3 times a day but she usually won't eat more than a couple bites in the morning, about 1/2 a container at lunch, and a big bowl of oatmeal and a fruit before bed (this is the only one that is consistently eaten 100% and even sometimes a second helping). She also gets puffs (which she is obsessed with) and little bites of very soft things off of our plate but almost not enough to even mention.

Re: The formula post got me thinking...

  • Pretty much what @mommabakes‌ said.

Typical breakfasts (one of these): pancakes, eggs, English muffin/toast with butter or peanut butter, or waffle -- all of them served in bite size pieces for her to pick up WITH a serving of fruit.

Lunch: (one of these) Applegate lunch meat and cheese torn in pieces, pasta with a little yogurt butter, chicken chunks, or some other protein WITH a serving of a steamed veggie cut up in small chunks or fresh veggie that she can mash no problem (pepper, cucumber and then a small applesauce pouch or a fruit

Dinner: similar to lunch and usually whatever we are having!

She's 10 months and has 6 teeth but has been and still mashes with her gums on the sides.

  • This content has been removed.
  • I strive for a fruit or veggie, a grain and a protein. Autumn eats almost everything we give her so yeah...

  • We do 3 meals a day plus 1 or 2 snacks.
BREAKFAST: whole wheat waffle, pancakes, toast or regular oatmeal with applesauce and some banana.

SNACK: plain yogurt, if it's hot and we are outside a frozen tube of berry yogurt, or puffs/cheerios.

Lunch: usually leftovers from dinner or shredded cheese and whole wheat crackers and some fruit.

SNACK: fruit if not eaten at lunch, yogurt if not eaten earlier, roasted chickpeas or puffs.

DINNER: Whatever we are eating or roasted chicken thighs if we are eating something inappropriate. Chubba seems to love garlic, he won't eat anything that is too bland.
  • Thanks everyone for your feedback. I'm having a hard time because she just does not care for the purée but only has 2 teeth and seems to gag/choke on a lot of solids we try.

A few weeks ago we were really struggling to make that jump from puree to solids.  Basically I just decided that at least twice a day he was getting at least a few bites of something solid.  We started with avocado and banana because those were easiest.  After about a week of that I added pears and butternut squash (very soft).  At the beginning he really wasn't wild about some of it (he loved avo and banana, but the others not so much).  After we got through about 10 days of that it became so much easier and he got the hang of it.  Now he will try pretty much anything solid I put down in front of him.

Emily started eating solid foods before she had any teeth. Babies can gum quite a lot. As a lot of the PPs said, she eats mostly what we eat now. She will not eat purees and she will throw a fit if she sees the baby spoon. She will eat off a regular spoon or fork when I give her something that isn't a consistency that she can pick up easily off her tray.

Breakfast is some Cheerios on the tray while I'm making breakfast, which she will also eat with me. Usually that's scrambled eggs and sausage.

Lunch is some cut up chicken or sandwich deli meat along with some cut up soft apples if she'll eat them.

Dinner is whatever we're having for dinner. She really likes any meats and she likes the chicken pot pie that I make with chicken flavored noodles.

She likes bananas a lot and will take big bites off a banana or I will slice some off for her to eat. She will also eat slices strawberries. The bananas I have to be careful with because if she eats too many she'll get backed up.

Edit: She also takes a 4 oz bottle of formula after breakfast, a 6 oz bottle at her first nap, a 4 oz after lunch, a 6 oz at her second nap, and a 6 or 8 oz for bedtime depending on how much of solid foods she's eaten that day. (total between 26-28oz)

    Snacks are mum-mum crackers.

  • Breakfast is usually whole milk plain yogurt that I mix with mashed fruit/purée. I add a little baby oatmeal sometimes if I need to thicken it up.

Lunch and dinner are some of the following: pasta with veggie purée, bites of our food, baby stew (ground meat cooked with carrots, potato, celery, etc and mashed), scrambled egg (new for us), zucchini fritters, fruit, veggie, etc.

Snacks are puffed rice or millet, fruit in her silicone feeder, toast with cream cheese or butter, whatever I'm snacking on, or rarely a teething cookie.

Overall, she is a very good eater and will try anything. FWIW, she has 1 tooth.

  • My baby gal has no teeth but she can still eat solids like a champ. According to our developmental pediatrician, they don't really need teeth to chew at this point. We gradually graduated from purees to small solids to bigger solids now.

A typical breakfast will be either oatmeal/cinnamon/apples, or a scrambled egg with cheese, or yogurt with cut fruit or mini pancakes or just a mix of things.

A typical lunch is about 6-7oz of semi-pureed chicken soup i make (w/ zucchini, carrot, potato, rice and celery), or a cut up burger with a side of semi-pureed veggies (like cauliflower/peas), or another protein w/ veggie.

A typical snack is fruit or a fruit pouch (like Plum Organics), or yogurt. And some puffs (she loves those too).

And a typical dinner is pretty much what we're having if appropriate. She loves pasta bolognese (i make the small alphabet pasta for her), meatballs, grilled chicken, etc. I also some times give her small pieces of cheese to munch on while I'm making dinner (like mozzarella or something else).
  • @jojo1112‌ we have the same problem here. I will give her a veggie pouch (she is refusing spoons almost always) or I sneak some in by mashing up the veggie and spreading it on crackers, toast, or whatever I'm able to. She certainly doesn't get a whole serving that way but I will do this pretty much any time I give her that kind of stuff and she gobbles it right up. I've also done this with lentils on crackers and that was a hit!
  • @jojo1112 - Honestly, I just get what I can down him. Some days he is good and others can be more difficult. He typically seems to focus on one or two things and the others get fed to the dog. Even if it's something he usually likes. :)

I figure he is getting most of his nutrition from me anyway so I'll just do what I can.

Same as above. Except we don't have a dog, his food just goes on the floor. He thinks it's a game to make DH pick it up :)
  • @jojo1112 - i think if the only way to get fruit/veggies is through a pouch then just keep doing that. According to my brother-in-law who's a resident, apparently a lot of doctors keep those pouches with them and eat them on the go when they can't get a solid meal. So just keep at it maybe you'll have a doctor son in your future ;)
  • @AlejandraN2 - LOL, I need to show this to my H, he thinks it's gross that I think the pouches taste yummy.

That makes me feel better. Just getting nervous for a month from now when all his nutrition is coming from food. I told DH yesterday we will have to send him to college with some pouches and his sleep sack ;)
I'm also worried about when we have to rely solely on food for her nutrition. Especially since she's a slow gainer. I second the idea of sending our babies to college with pouches, lol.

This is the first time in months I've found the dog to be far more useful then annoying. Although DS thinks it's a game to dangle food down a watch the dog stare at him. It's really adorable and frustrating all at the same time, which pretty much sums up parenthood.
Yes, if only our dog didn't shed so much. At least I don't have to worry about food. We did have to start feeding our dog less at her regular meals though. :)

If he doesn't outgrow some of these allergies, this may be our plan ;)
I am worried about him getting enough nutrition from solids. I'm going to ask for a referral to a nutritionist at his allergy appointment Wednesday

@AlejandraN2 my sis is a nurse and she said several nurses and drs do this at their hospital
  • One of the only ways my LO will eat some veggies is mixed in with something she likes. She loves chicken and brown rice, so I mix broccoli in with that and add a little cheese. I make it all really soft and mush it all up together. I chop the chicken up really small using the slap chop. She also looooves blueberry pancakes, so I might try adding some veggies to pancakes too.

  • Another way to get extra veggies in is to use a pouch (or puréed veggies) as a sauce over noodles.

  • @krose0713‌ I've mixed different things in with pancakes for LO. Her new favorite is sweet potato/banana/cinnamon pancakes! I just mash it up pretty good and it mixes in the mixture very easily.
  • @lilqt3929 - Do you literally just mash all those together and cook it in a pan or do you add additional ingreideients? I need to get on your level. Shoot. I'm not creative at all when it comes to making food for LO.

  • As for us - LO eats a mix between table foods and purees. She loves to feed herself but also still likes purees but yo can tell they are really starting to not fill her up enough.

Breakfast - usually yogurt & fruit/fruit puree or oatmeal w/ fruit

Lunch - toast w/ cream cheese or butter, grilled cheese or cheese quesadilla (one of these) and then she will usually eat a veggie puree

Dinner - same as lunch or pasta and usually a pouch if she doesn't eat much

Snacks - she loves puffs, mum mums, cheese cubes, fruit (cut up or in her mesh feeder)

I am seriously not good at creating things for LO. She hasn't even tried eggs yet (for some reason I'm scared?) This post gave me some great ideas though!!

  • My LO also eats a mix of solid foods and purees.  I give him purees if I feel I need to supplement.  He loves most food.  Breakfast is usually yogurt and cheerios or oatmeal with a fruit puree mixed in,every once in a while he might have some toast, eggs, or pancakes.  Lunch usually varies-could be oatmeal with fruit mixed in, or shredded cheese and a fruit/vegetable puree or lunchmeat and fresh fruit or leftovers.  Dinner-if what we are eating is appropriate he eats that, if not it is purees.  He is still BF throughout the day.  We are all over the place.  I am not that concerned at this point since he is still under a year and still getting BM.

@smilingeyes2308‌ I really just experimented at first but I make the pancake mixture the way I normally would (just a store bought mix), I mash up whatever it is I want to add in (so for banana and sweet potato - I mash up both on a plate and add some water to make it similar consistency to a chunkier puree), then add it slowly into the pancake batter. Just add more if it looks like the batter can handle some more fruit/veggie mix. I usually make several mini pancakes at a time and freeze leftovers so after the first few I make, I taste test and adjust flavors as needed. You could also scoop out a little of the plain batter to experiment with in another bowl or make several different flavors if you wish. Try it, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
