Babies in the Sun?

So I've been walking/running 4+ miles about 5 days a week. I love love my jogging stroller, but it doesn't have a lap rail. So her legs are completely exposed to the sun. I spray her with baby sunscreen ALL THE TIME, but she still is tan on her legs! My one friend thought it was super cute, but I feel like a failure of a Mom. She has never been burned nor even get close to being red. So is all sun exposure bad do I need to start making her wear pants? Am I breaking my baby guise?!

ETA - I just noticed the tan line yesterday; so it's not like I've been purposely letting her tan.

I know sun is good for Vitamin D, but I also know that baby's skin is super sensitive. I wasn't sure if the main thing was avoiding being burned or if it was avoiding the rays completely.

  • I think as long as she isn't burning and you are putting on sunscreen then she should be ok.

I'm sure the scientist on the board might tear this apart, but if you are putting sunscreen on her and she's not getting burned...she's prob ok?

Good job on the running BTW!

Thanks I wish it would show some improvement on the way my jeans fit...Aahhh

I'm sure it will soon! I think it's great..I couldn't run 4 miles if I was being chased

Well I'm not running the whole 4 miles. That would probably kill me....lol I just alternate walking then jog a little bit here and there. I spend like 1h20m on my walk. So I am definately not doing it super fast.

  • Good job on the running. It will show, just takes time to catch up. Maybe make sure to not take her out during the brightest times of the day if you don't want to put pants on, but I wouldn't worry too much unless she is burning. That's just me.

  • Even with sunscreen Clara has a little bit of a tan. Never a burn, and I think it's ok. Has developed over time just like mine would.

  • LOs legs are the same way. We don't walk in our stroller near as much as you, but I am wondering if his legs being exposed in the car while riding in his carseat has anything to do with it?? He has a slight tan line from the shorts he wears everyday. When we are outside in direct sun I always put sunscreen on him.

  • Skye is the complete opposite of her brother. She is getting tan even with sunscreen being applied religiously.

  • I just noticed today that dd's legs look tan also. No tan line but they are deft darker than the rest of her. I also put lots of ss on. I'm wondering if it is from the car. I put ss on when we are going to the park, outdoor party or for a walk but not when running errands in the car. Hmmm.....

I would put on thin, airy pants on her just to be cautious.

Btw, are you sure it's a tan? I've noticed dd is starting to "darken up". Dh is very dark and it seems like she's getting a little more color now. I thought it was a tan, but even her armpits and tummy got more color. I'm super happy she's not going to be pasty white like me.

I think so because it's from just the middle of her thigh down.

  • I slather mine with SPF 50 religiously, and he's still brown. My H is the same way, brown as a nut after 5 minutes in the sun. He's never once gotten even a little pink. I'm not concerned, my pedi isn't concerned.

  • I'd still put airy pants on or some protection. My dad is a doctor and told me to limit Avery's sun exposure to only 30 minutes a day even when I completely cover him. He is old school though and I usually do not listen when we are out but I don't take him out often.

  • Carmen's legs got a little pink at the zoo the other day. I had her in the umbrella stroller with the shade up, and it didn't even occur to me that her legs were still exposed! I felt like the worst mom ever, especially since I bought her sunblock recently and didn't think to use it. Thanks to DH's Puerto Rican genes, she has a bit more melanin than her red headed mom, but I'm not taking that chance again!
  • I'm glad it's not just me. I swear if I use sunblock I would NEVER tan... Lol

@cdhaslag‌ I am in ND. So it's not as warm as Texas, but I think she would be uncomfortable in pants as well.
