Hello everyone! I always lurk never comment.. I'm due feb 19th with fourth child. Just wondering if everyone is getting the flu shot this fall? I only ever got the flu shot once and that was after the birth of my twins. Not sure if I should get it while pregnant. Thanks!

  • I was told to get it with our first baby, especially since she wasn't able to get it herself for the first six months. I got pregnant in September, and I think I got it after the first trimester was over.

  • See I am not a big fan either and when I got one with my twins I got really sick with a fever so it really makes me nervous. I know this sounds weird but I am always afraid it is one of those things drug companies and doctors push and then come back a couple years down the road and say oh maybe that wasn't a good idea. But I also want to do everything in my power to deliver a healthy baby. How many of you have had it while pregnant?

It's a requirement for my employment, so I will get it for sure!

Most OB offices will make you. I used to never get them but since I started working in an urgent care I've seen people who were so miserable and looked like death. It's worth getting! Also we usually have people get vaccinated in October/November since Flu season goes until late June. The vaccine only has active immunity for 4 months. Also, I'm a huge huge huge advocate for the Tdap (pertussis) vaccine everyone who is going to have interaction with your newborn should be up-to-date. I personally know a baby that was life flighted to a children's hospital at 6 weeks old because she contracted pertussis. She was on a ventilator and the Pediatricians told the parents she would most likely die. The way she looked & sounded when she coughed was heartbreaking. She spent months in the Hospital. Happy ending: She survived and is healthy now. That's my long rant for the day. Sorry ladies
  • Yes, definitely!!
  • I won't be. We're irresponsible antivaxers :-O I got one with dd but have since revised my position on the issue.
  • I had one when pg with DS. Its the only one I've ever had but I will next time I'm pg.
~I give up. No siggie for me~
  • Yep! My office usually gives it in October.
  • I get one every year anyway because of my job (pre-school teacher of 1 year olds) and my ob strongly recommended it. I do think this year I will look into the kind with out Thiomersal.

  • Without a doubt. Protection can be passed to the baby, and with this LO being born right in the middle of flu season with an older brother in daycare, I'm not taking any chances.

  • Yes! I've had one with pregnancy 2 & 3. DS has heart defects so it's extremely important that we get them so that he stays healthy.
  • Get it; protect your baby!

I got mine during second tri. last pregnancy, and had zero side effects.

  • Absolutely without a doubt.  Especially since the baby will be born at the height of flu season.  DH and DS will get them as well.  DH doesn't like to get them (hates needles) but he sucks it up because he hates being sick more. :P

My aunt got the flu at the very end of her first pregnancy and was extremely ill with a high fever when she delivered.  The baby died either during or right after birth due to complications from my aunt's illness.  I know that it was 40+ years ago and medicine has changed and improved greatly since then, but because of that I do everything humanly possible to reduce the risks of getting the flu while pregnant.

  • I don't do the flu shots. I rarely get the flu, and have only had the flu shot a few times in my life.  After the last time I got it (when the whole H1N1 scare was going around) and I ended up catching H1N1 anyway, plus I ended up in the hospital for 6 days in isolation with pneumonia that nearly killed me...I'm not going to bother with flu shots.  Every time I've gotten a shot I end up catching the flu and it's worse than it really should have been.

Since I had that bout with the H1N1 I haven't had the flu, in fact I've only had 2 very minor colds in the last 5 years.  I attribute it to quitting smoking by switching to vaping, eating healthier, and drinking more herbal tea. Plus whenever my older children get sick, I wear a surgical mask around them and bleach or rubbing alcohol every surface they come in contact with, along with quarantining them to their rooms until they are better.

Honestly, I have a hard time just accepting what doctors and the CDC push as public health, after I've been dealing with their utter ignorance in my business industry's fight to not be over regulated by these yahoos. Whenever money is a major player in anything, all true concerns for public health go out the window.  We've seen out right lies, purposeful mis and disinformation put out through the media, and (as much as I hate being that person) a serious conspiracy to eliminate vaping as a competitor to traditional cigarettes. Many of us ex smokers have started to feel that Big Pharma and the government are purposefully working to keep a portion of the population smoking in order to sell them treatments for the inevitable diseases they will develop, or sell them smoking cessation products that rarely work. It's scary to think people really might want us sick to make a profit. But that's what we've been dealing with for the past year.

Vaccines are a multi-billion dollar a year business...of course big pharma uses fear to move their product, it's just like buying insurance. And the government requires that we do both, vaccinate our kids to put them in school (public but many private as well) and we have to have insurance both health and car. (But that is a whole other rant of it's own.)

While I'm not an anti-vaccination kind of person, both of my kids are vaccinated against most of the major diseases, and I have no problem putting my new LO on a delayed and slower vaccination schedule this time around (though I don't agree with all things they are vaccinating for now, like chickenpox.) I do however see how in general the flu vaccination is anywhere from 20-58% effective in the general population at either keeping a person from getting sick or reducing the symptoms of illness.  It is no where near 100% effective.

There was this study done here (please ignore that it is being hosted on an anti-vaccination/autism site-- I don't agree with their philosophies, however the study is interesting and not connected to the anti-vaccination movement.)

That study shows that there was very little difference between unvaccinated mother's and their infants instances of being hospitalized vs mothers who were vaccinated and their infants, when comparing influence like illnesses causing hospitalization both inpatient and outpatient vists. It also concludes (which is usually the most important part) that the disease risk for either group (unvaccinated and vaccinated) is low.

I really have no problem walking around in January and February, until I give birth, in public with a surgical mask on and washing my hands before I touch my face or eat...just simple hygiene steps can keep you from getting sick.  I live in New England where flu season usually hits full force the end of Jan through mid March as our weather goes into extreme cold temps and warms up to strange warm spells.  People also tend to get sick up here around Halloween when the weather changes, and in the spring when the weather changes.

I'm not trying to convince anyone not to get it if that's what you plan on doing. I'm just giving the reasons why I am choosing not to. I don't think they necessarily harm you, though there could be some possibilities -- as big pharma does really like to hide things like that-- I think it's mostly about making informed choices in everything we do that not only effects our body, but the life we are carrying inside of us.

  • @jmcgra06‌ none at all for the time being. There's a lot to the whole issue and I don't really want to debate. A few of our concerns are: the way vaccines are created (in non human tissues or aborted fetal cells), the actual effectiveness, the potential for harm to the body esp children with gut health issues, the risk of not developing natural immunities, the whole propaganda/money incentive for big pharma, etc. This is in no way meant to question anyone else's decision. My husband and I feel that this is the best decision for our family.

    @boxerrrmama85‌
Well we're seriously considering homeschooling anyways but I'll be sure to avoid playgroups with your future child ;)
  • I've never gotten one before, If I'm back in the classroom maybe.

Everyone will do what they feel is right for their families and their babies. I truly believe that is EVERY mother's right!

With that said, I think anyone that doesn't vaccinate their children for fear the government or drug companies are out to get them or make more money off them are silly. You aren't thinking about the disease that vaccine is protecting from! Regardless of how you feel about the vaccine it works against what it is designed to protect you and your family from (ie smallpox). These diseases haven't come back around yet because the vast majority of the population is vaccinated. With the new movement to not vaccinate, this will likely change in the near future! I pray you don't ever have to experience it but I will protect my children from it.

Flu vaccines are totally different tho. I got my first flu vaccine last year (only because we were ttc and ob insisted it was needed). I had no symptoms/reactions and as a teacher I even didn't get sick! I will probably keep it up while pregnant but doubt I will continue after that, we will see.
