so who ISN'T hormonal??

Everyone keeps saying how women get all crazy because of their raging hormones during pregnancy, but I have felt as mellow as ever! Don't get me wrong I have cried a time or two over a random commercial but truly I was way more crazy before mentral cycles... Anyone e else keeping their sanity lol?

Re: so who ISN'T hormonal??

  • I feel like I've kept my cool so far. There have been some emotional breakdowns that lasted 5 mins or so lol but nothing like going off the deep end :)

  • I don't really get overly emotional and cry. I get angry or annoyed just like normal though. My husband and anyone who knows me knows better than to try and say its pregnancy hormones. Just another form of gaslighting (read @NatureLovers last sentence) in my opinion.

  • I'm a little bitchier than normal (which is tough to imagine ;) ) but other than that I don't really have mood swings.

  • I have been feeling the same for the most part. I am more anxious lately (I had my first anxiety attack in a couple of years) and more blunt. However no major mood swings or hysterics...
  • I feel pretty close to the same as being non-pregnant. I had good and bad days then too. The good still outweigh the bad.

  • I feel better pregnant. Sure I cry at dumb shit, but I was more hormonal when I'd pms!

Besides crying because I ran into fire hydrant with my car yesterday, ruining my front bumper, I'd say I've had my emotions in check.

  • I'm quite behaving myself more than I think I'm a lot better than going over PMS #:-S
  • I was ok until today.  Today, I have zero patience and I cry at the drop of a hat.

DH is leaving today for a weekend conference - when I woke up, I realized that he hadn't kissed me good-bye and I was so sad.  Then I remembered that he was working from home this morning so really he was downstairs.

  • I've had a few moments where in retrospect I realize I was being irrational - but doesn't everyone have those anyway, pregnant or not? A few times where I cried at something sad on tv that I wouldn't normally have cried at. But that's pretty much it. I don't think it's been excessive.
I agree with what others have said above re: dismissing what women are feeling. If its not pregnancy it's pms. Or people expect that it's going to happen so ascribe "hormones" to what's otherwise within the range of normal behaviour.
  • Not hormonal over here as far as attitude.  Now being sick physically and achy, yeah that's totally hormonal.  The only way I'll take being called hormonal is if it's a legit defense in court after I punch that person in the face for telling me I'm hormonal.

  • Mine has been getting worse by the weeks. I am more irritable and definetly more sensitive than normal. I do cry at anything unsettling, I mean anything...frustration is a big on set of tears.

  • I've lost my cool a couple of times in the past. Who wouldn't, pregnant or not, when you've felt sick to your stomach 24/7 for weeks upon weeks? Other than that, I've been fine.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I have been on cloud nine! I mean i had one crabby day but everyone is entitiled to that pregnant or not but generally calm cool collected and surprisingly unaffected and phased by anything... Nothings bringing me down so stop trying karma B-)
  • I'm emotionally unavailable, so I'm not a crier.  Have I been bitchier than normal?  Hard to tell.  I can get bitchy at any time for any reason.  I don't think it has to do with being pregnant.  I'm just a bitch sometimes.
Huh...I guess I am emotionally unavailable too then. Everything you described is me.

  • I've actually felt more "balanced" and sane since getting pregnant. I suffered from mood disorders/depression off and on throughout adulthood, which I know was at least somewhat hormonally driven, because birth control pills made my mood swings seem worse. I feel like pregnancy naturally evened out my temperament!

I've cried only once this pregnancy- at around 6 weeks pregnant when an Outkast song came on the radio. It freaked me out that I cried for no reason! Since then, nothing.

I'm very grateful that I feel so in control of my emotions.

Sorry to break it to you all, but you have a ton more hormones flowing through your body during pregnancy than before, regardless of whether you "feel" like you do. And there's no denying hormones affect brain function including emotion.
  • I thoguht I was good, but last night I was reading to my daughter and she picked out The Giving Tree, I couldn't even read it because I was crying.  My daughter just turned around in my lap and wiped my tears off my face and told me i was silly.....she is probably right.

Haha! I'm sorry! My hormones got the best of me!

I agree the term "hormonal" is used to discount women's opinions so I try not to use it. But seriously my progesterone is through the roof. Blehhhhh

I was just kidding. Yes there are more hormones running through my body that is a fact. I mean it when I say that I am no different emotionally now than I was before pregnant. My husband will tell you I am still an emotionally disconnected biotch...sometimes.

  • Man you guys are all saying "other then X and X, I feel normal" Well X and X means you are hormonal. I didn't invalidate your opinions. I am very aware of what gaslighting is and how wrong it is. That doesn't mean we should completely disregard the effect that these hormones have on us, again not saying there is anything wrong with that, our opinions are valid no matter what. I may cry and little more, or get angry a little quicker but my points are still valid. Why can you not admit that these pregnancy hormone have an effect on us. I call BS on anyone who says that pregnancy has not changed their mood AT ALL and hormones are having ZERO effect.

Also, lighten up. My earlier post referenced chocolate..I was just trying to lighten up the mood

Not sure who you are referring to here but I can't admit these hormones are affecting my mood because that would be lying. And I'm not a liar. Why can't you just accept that?

I feel very mellow. Haven't cried at all, actually. Given that this is an IVF baby, I had a ton of hormones/ drugs in my system going into this pregnancy- and still I am okay.
My husband has even commented how truly calm I have been through this whole process.

Typically, I do not get overly upset or cry so I would actually be surprised if I did see a change.

See, and now I really like you. I should seriously just move to Canada if it's full of people like you and stargirl. Plus I used to travel to Ontario a bunch for my job and loved it.

  • Ok, so YES hormonal is used to discount women and that is a shitty thing to do.

However, in the case of the poster who made a remark about how we are a forum full of hormonal women, I didn't get the sense that was intended to discount us. My reading of that offhand comment was that it was about how our pregnancy hormones tend to INTENSIFY how we already think/feel about things.

At least that is how I feel, but I am wary of generalizing. I think it's good to deconstruct these kinds of things.

When I'm pregnant, or nursing, etc, my thoughts/opinions sure aren't any less valid, I just tend to think/feel/react more strongly. Nothing wrong with that. Is what it is! Makes pregnancy forums an extra fun adventure for me.

You can encounter the same sort of thing in testosterone-fuelled environments. Doesn't make them more/less valid, just.... you know...
  • Haha this post turned for the worst... Irony lol
  • oh sorry all, im super hormonal, i cry, i yell, watch out, it can change at the drop of a hat!

    _________

Does poutine have cheese curds in it? That is my only contribution to this thread. :)

Actually, I'm more tired and hungry than usual, and that is probably hormone-driven (or the fact that growing a baby is hard work), but I don't notice it having a significant effect on my emotions.
  • CbeanzCbeanz member
I have never heard of this "poutine."
