Baby Names

NN: 'Lucy'

Hello! Long time lurker and thread reader here! Needing some help from the pros!

Attempting to name baby girl #3 and DH & I's name styles are very opposite. We both like Lucy, but I like it only as a nickname. I want her to have options as she's older. We like Lucille but don't love it. I came across Lucilla and I'm liking it, but want to know: how do YOU pronounce it and am I totally out of line thinking this name is cute?! Is this a total name flop?! I'm pronouncing it as 'loo-sil-a". When you see it do you say it that way or loo-see-a? Thanks!

Re: NN: 'Lucy'

  • I would pronounce it Loo-sill-uh as well. I think it's pretty!

I would pronounce the same way you do, and I think it's a very pretty name!!!

There's also Lucia or Lucretia but I really like Lucilla, I don't think I would've thought of that but it's so pretty and I think the best
  • I would pronounce it loo-sill-uh also. I don't really like it. I think Lucy works well on its own but if you want longer than I like Lucia as pp mentioned.

  • I love Lucy as a FN and have been trying to sell DH on it for years.  I'm not a NN-as-FN person but I think Lucy is perfectly fine on its own and suitable for all stages of life.  I like it better than anything it can be a NN for.

  • Lucinda is a real name. Though I love Lucille.
  • Love Lucille and Lucia! Lucilla I am not as crazy about.

  • I prefer Lucy however I think Lucille or Lucilla are both nice. I pronounce it they way you do.
  • Don't forget about Lucretzia. My great aunt Lucy was named that.

I always liked Lucretia, like Lucretia Mott.

  • I've never heard of Lucilla before, but I would guess it is pronounced as you have listed.

If we were to have another daughter, her name would be Lucy. Lucy is a stand alone name, just the English variant of the Italian/Spanish Lucia. My favorite longer version to get to Lucy is Lucinda. Then she also has the option of Cinda as a NN.

  • I love Lucretia/Lucretzia, but I'd probably never go for it in real life. I also love Lucinda and Lucille. But Lucy is really fine on it's own, it's a great name.
