I'm late to the game, but order your mcdonalds fries with no salt or lightly salted. They have to wait for a brand new batch to cook and use a special scoop for them. No old fries! I used to work at a McD's in high school, and I hated those people, but now if I do ever go there its the only way I order them!
You can also just ask them to make fresh fries. They will do it.

On the financial note, my UO is that my kids are totally getting credit cards in high school.

I said this last week when I was out with friends and got lambasted. But two of them also had to have parents cosign for cars despite being in their mid-late 20s because they don't have the credit history. I totally appreciate my parents giving me a cc instead of cash for things when I was young.

Woah. That is unpopular for sure. They should be building their credit history once they are earning their own income. It's not their parents' fault that they didn't have any credit history in their mid-late 20's.

Pretty sure I agree with this. I couldn't imagine getting my SS, who is VERY responsible and great, a credit card in high school. That's on him once he gets a steady job and can work towards building his own credit.

^ yep. Our kids will have set weekly chores (cleaning their room and bathroom and probably doing dishes) and then have oppurtunities to make money, such as dusting, yard work, etc.

No credit cards for my babies. We don't even have one for us, we just pay cash so we don't start living beyond our means. We have financed things (such as new appliances and our windows) but that is always directly through whatever we are buying so I don't have a card I can use anywhere.

  • I'm not a huge fan of giving kids credit cards. Some kids may get the concept about not spending more than they have, but others seriously consider it free money and don't blink about purchases because their parents pay the bill. Also, why start them off in debt? Why not teach them to save for big purchases, to use a bank account, a debit card, and to spend wisely first? Credit card debt is a huge reason kids drop out of college. I'm very hesitant to give my child one until they get a job and learn how to manage money appropriately.
I totally get the risks... but facing my parents if I put something on there I wasn't supposed to was going to be horrible. It only works if you don't let kids consider it free money. I think of it as a chance to teach kids to be responsible with them, rather than letting their first one be something that's totally uncontrolled and tempting.

  • I wont give an allowance. Mostly a result of how I was raised - we just were expected to help with chores. Occasionally, Mom would offer $20 to do something specific. Often it was cleaning their basement area to get ready for a guest. I think we will probably do that. My SIL, who is still a teen and lives at home, told me that her Mom said she would give her an allowance. But then she always forgets...so SIL said she just doesnt do chores anymore. I was like wha??!! Sure, your mom should maybe follow through, or discuss it with you. But you do live at their nice house, eat their food, wear the clothes they buy you, use the cell phone they pay for...you can wash the dishes and feed the dogs.

Regarding credit cards, I didn't realize until my early 20s that not paying off the entire balance was even an option. My parent's always paid the entire balance every month and I was raised to think that was just what people do.

I firmly believe in helping my kids build their credit so they will have credit cards opened in only their names but they won't be in possession of the cards. Once a month, they can use it for maybe a small purchase (under $10) and they will be responsible for paying that balance on time every month. I will have access to all their accounts online so that I can monitor their spending and payments. That way I still maintain control but they can still build their credit.

ETA: DH and I hate paying interest and we are fortunate enough not to have any debt except our mortgage and we plan to teach our kids the same lesson - that debt is bad and you need to avoid it if at all possible.

  • I'm fine with young people having credit cards, but why on earth would you let your kids on your credit card?!  I have excellent credit, and a credit card has nothing to do with it (student loan, SBA loan, mortgage, commercial building purchase).

Kids can do chores/general upkeep of the house at a very young age.  DS (18 months old) knows to put his clothes in the hamper when he's done getting dressed, throws away anything he can find on the floor, grabs a towel when he sees something spilled on the floor, and asks to "help with cookin'" when he sees me pulling stuff out of the fridge.  He won't get paid for the general expectations, but when he's older, he could earn some money by doing the occasional big tasks like, power-washing the deck, cleaning out and organizing cupboards, spring and fall lawn preparations.

Our kids will have to follow a donate, save, spend division of their money (10% gets donated to a charity of their choice, 25% gets saved in a savings account, 65% they get to spend as they want), and our kids will be getting jobs once they're old enough (around 13).  DH and I both started working at 13 (I baby-sat and peeled apples at the orchard for pies and DH washed dishes at a diner), and we feel it helped set us up for success in school and out in the real world later.

I sooo agree. Tater tots are the worst! I don't mind curly fries occasionally but that is the only exception I make.

But Tater Tots provide the most real estate for ketchup out of all the fried potato options...and ketchup is amazing!

Lol! I'm ok with hating tots. They're not that special. But fries are going to be hard to compromise! Although we should probably stay together for the kid (chicken). Its in his best interest.

  • I think BMBs should have monthly mods.

Why? Wouldn't that be a pain in the butt?

Uhh.. why would you say something like this? Your opinion doesn't matter much to me anyway, since I don't even remotely recognize your screen name. I love our mod and I think she does a great job.

    ETA words.

Obviously bc that's my opinion, and I don't care if it matters to you or not.

My parents paid for my gas in high school even though I was babysitting at least four days a week. My dad got a joint credit card with me and I was told to only charge gas and if my mom asked me to pick something up from the store, etc. I could then use it for that. She never asked me to do this for her and we lived in a pretty small town so I was only filling up probably 1 or 2 times a month.

My dad had a lot of talks with my brother and I as teenagers about paying off the entire credit card each month, etc. He never made us fear using a credit card and taught us how to use it responsibly.

It definitely helped when it came time for me to buy a new car for my DH three years ago. He was raised that credit cards are horrible and he should never have one. He had NO credit history. Since then we got a card for him and he is working on creating his own credit history.

It is a great convenience to have one when used responsibly.

  • Re: Credit cards for teenagers.  Definitely. But do NOT put them on your account.  Get a card in their own name, on their own account (with a low limit).  I had a really hard time renting an apartment at age 20 because I didn't have a credit score due to my mom putting me on her account for a CC in HS instead of having my own account.  So DD will have an account in her name by age 16 so she actually has a credit score when she needs one.

It's all based on how the person is added to the card. If they are just added as a signer, the card will not have any impact on their credit but if they are added as a joint cardholder, then it will.

I'm in the FB group and I also post here semi-regularly.  Does that mean my opinions don't count too?  Or yours, for that matter, since you're a member of both?

I think that if you have a problem with our mod, you take it up with her, and not post about her. How would you feel if others did the same to you?

If she asks why that's my opinion I will gladly tell her. There's nothing to take up with her, its my opinion so I posted it.
