Link between epidural and PPD rates?

Hey, all. Saw this article today

Here's the short version:

New study shows women who used pain management (epidural) during labor had PPD rates of 14% compared to 35% who chose unmedicated labors.(Taking a childbirth class and BF after labor also reduced PPD rates). There is a well-known link between acute and chronic pain to depression. The interpretation is that "managing postpartum pain supports the mothers ability to emotionally attach and care for her infant"

I don't think it will be affecting my decision regarding pain management, but I did find it interesting and thought you ladies might too.

Re: Link between epidural and PPD rates?

  • Huh, I was expecting this to say that women that chose pain med free births would have a lower risk when I opened the thread.

That is interesting. I don't think it will change my decision either but it is something to keep in mind (especially if I end up caving and getting the epi ;) )

  • The only pain management looked at was an epidural?
