Last name first names for girls

I LOVE when people use last name for girls first names.  My maiden name is Sawyer and I am really considering using that for a girls name.  Other names I like are Turner and Brooks.

Does anyone have any other last names they love for first names???

I love Hudson, it's one of my favourite names...I fully plan on using it when I have babies, but for a boy!! I also like Beckham, Griffin, Grayson, and I like Sawyer as well, I would use Sawyer for a girl but not the others. I would also like to use McGregor in a name, although probably a middle name. It's my moms maiden name and my Papa (her dad) passed away 2 years ago so it would be really special!!

  • I like some last names as first names, but most of the ones that work well, like Sawyer, only work on boys IMO. I think since it's your maiden nane it would be awesome in the middle name spot with a feminine first name, but I'm not a fan in the first nap spot for a girl.

  • I am a fan of family surnames as FNs, but most of them - and definitely Sawyer - work better as boys' names. My DD's name is an exception. It's my mom's maiden name, an Italian name ending in -a and clearly feminine-sounding.

I actually like Sawyer for a boy or a girl. Other than that I like Griffin, Lincoln and Harrison for boys but I can't think of any other last names as first names I like.

  • Sawyer is my GP boy name. It is very masculine to me; I would never use it on a girl.

  • I know that Sawyer is a boys name, but irl, I have only met girls with that name, so I wouldn't use it on a boy( or a girl either) . At the YMCA in our town, there is a little girl named Olsen nn Ole.......I have to say, she has no problem wearing that name.
  • I think its okay for a girl its not my style but I dont see the problem with it being a girls name. I love the Beckham but its too similar to Beckett (DD #2's name) I generally like most last names as first names and I dont like how most people think its okay to use them for boys but not girls
  • I think it depends on the name. I have a cousin named Clay (his mothers mn) and another named Karen (her mothers mn) and if I ever have another boy I will name him Bennett (DHs grandfather's last name). I also think this is more common in the south. I have heard girls named Campbell and a little boy named Parker.

  • I love last names as first names for boys and girls, but I live in the south where this is very common. Family names and double names reign supreme in our community. We know girls named Sutton, Carter, Parker, or with a feminine first name and masculine family name for a middle name and they are used as a double name - Ann Lamar, Anne Craig, Jane Reynolds, Sarah Michael. I think Sawyer for a girl is cute and special since it is your maiden name. If you love it, use it.
  • I think Sawyer for a girl is cute.  What about Taylor, Quinn, Finley, Kennedy, or Emerson?  I think those are all a little more feminine than Turner or Brooks.

I know I couple of girls named Brooks and I think it works well. I think Sawyer is a lovely boys' name but not for a girl.

DS's name is Clark which is common as a last name but is a perfectly valid legitimate first name too. I've heard of girls named Clark too and I actually don't mind it.

I actually really like this naming trend!!

I personally wouldn't use Sawyer for a boy or girl just because I have a negative connotation with it (town where I used to work). But I like the idea of using a family surname as a FN, and the fact that Sawyer is YOUR maiden name I would 100% use it. My guilty pleasure name for a girl is Collins. I only wish I could find it somewhere in my lineage to justify using it! I think one reason I really like it, is because my DH can't stand any girl name that ends in -ie, -a, -ly.

I really like Brooks as well. I don't really see how "Brooke" is feminine, but "Brooks" is masculine?

You have my support! I'd love to hear other examples as well.

  • No I like it! My first thought was that your Callahan was a girl but I like the way Callahan Flynn sounds
  • I think sometimes it depends on the last name. I have a friend who's mothers maiden name was Casey, and she named her daughter Casey. So her first name is the same as her mothers side of the family's last name. I thought it was really cool to try and carry on the name. I would do that if I actually liked my maiden name for a girl (Carrell)
  • No.  I hate the trend in general, and those options for girls are just terrible.

  • I like Sawyer for a girl, but think Brooks and Turner are pretty awful.

I like Avery, Emerson, and Sloane for girls, too...and I guess they could be surnames as well. Parker could also work both ways.

  • In general, I dislike the trend, but living in the South I do give a pass for family names because that's been done for ages down here.

That said, DD's name is a first name as well as surname (Adair) so I'm a sheeple.

  • I love this trend. We live in the south where this is very common. I am not a fan of old lady names like Violet and Scarlet or Rose. Our DS is Beckett.

    I love:

Collins (Girl)<-- will likely use as it is a maiden name.

    McKenzie (girl)

    Callahan

I can live with Sawyer, but Turner and Brooks are awful, especially for a girl.
  • @baby_blessings I LOVE Emerson! We have actually thrown that name around.  I am just wondering if it is too close to my name, Emily.  I love love love that name!
  • For the most part, I am not a fan of last names as first names for girls. I think it usually sounds pretentious, even in the south. My colleague's niece is named Holden because it's a family surname. I think it's horrible.

The only--only--time I am okay with it is when it is joined with a Mary: Mary Turner, Mary Brooks, Mary Campbell and that's what you call her, like Mary Ann or Mary Frances.

  • Like a PP said, I think last names as first names is more common in the South.  In general, I think it's a terrible trend, particularly on a girl.  I don't want a substitute teacher looking at the class list assuming my daughter is a boy because she has a first name like Turner or Benson.  Give her a girl name.
  • Sawyer for a girl is tops!

  • I like last names as first names :)

Benson. Bailey. Callahan. James. Hudson. Sawyer (only on a boy). Perry. Parker. Sarger. Cruz. Smith. Walker. Clark. McKenzie.
Those are the only ones I can think of right now.
  • This is such an obscure argument. What makes a name a surname? If anyone has had it as a last name?
Then as pps have listed Rose, Lindsay, etc some surnames ARE feminine. Most Americans, I would think, don't consider those names as only surnames.
Many of the surnames that are commonly used as fns are masculine. As in Parker, Hudson, Turner, Benson, Emerson, and Mc names. This style for boys doesn't get a lot of love from the regulars here, but I really like it because I want strong masculine names for my sons. Honestly though, it's becoming so popular and trendy that not many of them would make it onto my short list.
BUT I don't like the same types of names for girls as for boys. And I steer clear of names that have become gender neutral. My style for girls is very feminine names. I'm NOT a fan of old lady names, but no surnames for my daughters.
Also I think this makes me weird, but I would never use a family surname as a fn for my son. Mn, sure. Random "surname style name" for boys fn, yes. But I don't want a kid to have to think someone is saying his name every time someone mentions the "Carson" side of the family. Don't want to tell my son, Carson, that Grandpa Carson is coming next week.

  • I don't mind sawyer for a girl. I think it's cute for someone else's kid.

  • I have a Harrison, so surnamey first names don't bother me. We loved the name, and my H and I actually both had Harrisons in our family, so it has family significance as well.

I don't mind Sawyer as a mn for a girl if she has a very feminine fn, but I can't stand names like Brooks, Turner, Emerson, etc. on a girl. Yuck.

My DD's name is my mom's last name and my SIL's name is my MIL's maiden name (she changed her name but her parents are still living).  Trust me, this really is not a big issue.  Kids are smart enough to understand how names work by a young age. Plus, I would far rather use a name that has family meaning (especially from my side, because nobody's carrying on any of those surnames) than some random surname that has no meaning to us.  Even if it were the least bit confusing in childhood, it would be worth it to me for my child to carry a name that will always have that significance.

  • People are so opinionated on here. Jeez..... I wouldn't roll my eyes or judge you for using a "less feminine" name. I also don't get why anyone else would. You love the name, you should use it.

  • Ha, okay. Fair enough. I just feel bad for the person who wants to use a family name and asks for other last name options... and instead everyone just bashes her use of the family name. She didn't ask if you all hated Sawyer, she just asked for other options. I don't want to crush her dreams is all. Carry on.....
