Daycare biting woes (updated in OP)

LO has been bit 6 times in the last week and a half.

Previously, we had a cluster of incidents where I think he was bit something like 4 times in a two week period.  The offender moved up classrooms, so it stopped, but now it's happening again.

I realize that biting happens, and that at this age, it's just another means of communication for LOs that lack other ways to get their point across.  But holy cow.

His little arms are covered in bruises, he has bite marks on his back from yesterday, and today another kid BIT HIM IN THE FACE.  I'm getting concerned about it, but I don't know what to do.  So instead of giving in to emotions and just crying a little at my desk, I turn to you all.

Obviously, we're going to have a talk with his teachers about how they're going to work to prevent this in the future, but is that all we can do?  I guess I realize that I can't expect them to shadow my LO all day every day to prevent this happening again, but at the same time this isn't just a random incident, it's been nearly every day for the last week and a half.

What say you, June13?

Update: So after chatting with his teachers at pick-up it appears that it's not just one kid doing all the biting. It's a variety of scenarios that seem to trigger it, and they're keeping a closer eye on him.

They have the week off next week, so that will be a nice break from the madness. I guess I'll just have to see how things go moving forward.

  • That sucks so much, I wish I had some advice. I know there was someone on the working mom board who recently posted about a similar issue, not sure if you want to XP over there.

  • Our daycare actually has a biting policy that if your child bites another x number of times they will be suspended until the behavior can be corrected. It sounds like you doc had one biter and others are now joining in, probably because they were once bit! I would definitely talk with your doc they need to monitor and stop it.

  • Ty got bit yesterday because he and another kid were fighting over a block. So I kind of understand.

Are they giving you a reason? Are they providing you with a plan on how they intend to curb the behavior of the other biters? I would definitely be talking to the teachers about how you can help your kid not get bit as a ruse to get them to say what they are doing about the biting situation. I have even asked "Ty is biting at home, what do you do to discourage biting here so I can stay consistent?"

  • I don't really have any advice. That really sucks. Abby has bit me three times in the past week. I am just glad she is biting me and not another baby! I really think for her it's a teething thing- she only bites me when she is getting new teeth in. Perhaps it's a teething thing and not an aggression thing with your LOs biters? (Meaning, he isn't being victimized per se)....
