  Yes and no. It does it more based on the movement of your body, not necessarily your arm. Like if you gave an HJ it wouldn't give you a ton of miles (MH is dying to test this theory). But I have been pushing a shopping cart on a bumpy sidewalk and my FitBit thought I was tapping it to go to sleep. It's definitely not perfect but it's a great motivator, at the end of the day you know how active you really are
