STMs (and beyond): How Many Sleep 'n Plays/Sleep Sacks?

I am nearly CERTAIN this has been asked before, but my search couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I apologize in advance. :\

I finally did a count of what I have from a friend and outfits from my MIL. I know the whole "three outfits a day" thing, but I wasn't sure what applies to the below things. And from what I've read, Sleep 'n Plays are golden when the baby's little, so these things are the only "clothing" items on my registry, and I don't want to even have them on there if I already have enough. What are your thoughts on the quantities I have below?

Sleep 'n Plays:
NB: 1
0-3 mo: 1
3 mo: 2
3-6 mo: 6
6 mo: 2
6-9 mo: 3
9 mo: 4

Sleep sacks:
0-9 mo: 4

SwaddleMes: 2

Re: STMs (and beyond): How Many Sleep 'n Plays/Sleep Sacks?

  • For the first few months my kids lived in sleep and plays for the most part. How many you need depends on how often you want to do laundry. I think I usually had around 8 of each size through 6 months. (3 mo being te same as 0-3, and 6 mo same as 3-6).

I had to Google Sleep n Play, as I've never heard/seen them referred to as that before!  There's my thing for the day...

Anywho, I'd say way more sleepers, especially in the 0-3 stage.   Maybe a couple more NB sized ones, but maybe leave the tags on.  DS lived in sleepers for quite a while, they just make life so much easier.

As for sleep sacks and SwaddleMe's, you're probably good.  We alternated between 2 SwaddleMes (after we made the switch from a+a blankets to swaddle), always having 1 clean one and 1 in the wash.

  • Lots of sleepers, because that's pretty much what DD wore all day when she was little.  You only need a couple sleep sacks/swaddlers because we didn't wash them every time because they go on over the pjs.
  • I agree about a few more sleepers. DD lived in them 24/7 until she was 3 months old at least.

Four sleep sacks + 3 swaddles seems like a lot.  I would say 1-2 sleep sacks are enough if you want to return some of the ones you have.

Also, I wouldn't register for any clothes - you will get a ton anyway.

  • I concur. Definitely had DS1 in them a lot in the first 6 months. We love the nightgowns and the sleep n plays. It does depend on how often you want to do laundry. I think we had at least 7 in each size.

Especially with baby due in the fall, all he'll be wearing will be sleep n plays, except for the rare occasion that I want to dress him up for something fun. I loathe laundry, so I plan to have at least 9-10 in each size. I agree with PP, though, that tags should be left on everything until baby arrives and you know what size he'll be.

I have about 20 NB sleep n plays because that's all DS wore and he was teeny and in NB size from his birth in October through at least Christmas. I'm sure we won't need all of them for this LO, but DS wore every one! His 0-3 stuff is spring. :P So that's what we've had to buy in wintry clothes.

  • I would say count wise I agree with Emerald, but my babies usually are only in newborn for like a week or two, so I usually stock up on 3 months+ and kind of skimp the newborn and 0-3. Also, both DS and DD spit up all the time so we were washing clothes and sleep sacks incessantly. Hence, another reason for larger quantities.

  • I wouldn't add anymore to your registry. Clothes are the #1 item you will get at your baby shower so I would suggest keeping them off your registry or you'll get even more clothes that way. I think having one is okay so people know you want some of those but I wouldn't add more than one on the actual registry.

Oh also, 0-3 months and 3 months are the exact same size. Same thing with 3-6 and 6 months, and 6-9 months and 9 months. So in actuality, you are adding more of the same size by breaking them up that way.

I would get a lot more in the newborn through 6-9m sizes. Probably at least 10 in each size. Especially with LO being due in the fall. My kiddos lived in them from fall to early spring!

I had 2 swaddlers with my boys. It was fine, but more than a few times one would get dirty before the other one was washed/dryed. I bought 2 more for this LO just to make it easier. Your baby might not even like being swaddled so 2 might be good until LO is here, then you can go buy more if necessary.
