Diet/losing baby weight/nursing

So about 8 months before LO was conceived I was weighing in around 170 which is quite heavy for someone my height. I started eating healthier and working out. I got down to 150 by the time I found out I was KU. During pregnancy I gained until I was 205 and as soon as he was born I was back down to 160. In the last 6 months I have gained back up to nearly 200. I want to cry, because since I am BFing I always want to eat and have issues if I try to change any diet habits.

Can anyone help with ideas? Healthy meal ideas?

Re: Diet/losing baby weight/nursing

  • I feel you, pash. I'm studying to be a dietician so I know all the right things to do but following up is hard. Plus my supply thrives on carbs. Don't focus too much on calories right now, focus on making healthy choices. I'm avoiding too much added sugar (like candy and ice cream) but allow myself to have some in moderation. Especially if I didn't eat enough during the day. Also make sure you are getting enough water. Makes a huge difference for me. And things like avocado make a huge difference. :)

  • Do you mind if I ask how tall you are?

I feel your pain. I was the heaviest I've ever been in Jan of last year and worked hard to lose it, found out I was pregnant and gained it back plus some. I've only been able to lose half of it back. I'm starving all the time. Lately what has helped me is eating protein and low carb snacks like meats, cheese, veggies etc. and less things like chips, cookies, and stuff like that.

Also I have a terrible time working out so I try to walk with LO and the stroller and maybe do a yoga DVD. It's tough. I'm sorry :-(

  • I recommend high protein and only whole grains and definitely get active at least 30 min a day. Mix cardio with weights so you work tour whole body. Fruit is great for snacks as well as peanut butter.
My favorite sweet/carb snack is 1 slice whole wheat bread with peanut butter and sliced bananas.
Eggs with veggies and chicken in a whole wheat tortilla is my breakfast every day.
  • You're definitely not alone.  I worked to lose 70 lbs in the few years before I got pregnant.  I was at my goal weight for 3 months before getting pregnant.  I gained 45 lbs during pregnancy, telling myself the whole time that it was ok because I knew what worked for me to lose weight so I would be fine.  Well here I am, probably @ 30 lbs over where I was (I am avoiding the scale like the plague) and just not able to get on track.  I know I have gained weight since delivery and that makes me really sad.  That being said, what works for me when I do it is focusing on eating a lot of protein, especially in the morning.  Most fruits and veggies do not fill me up so I usually pair them with some sort of protein for snacks - apples with a little bit of peanut butter, carrots with hummus, celery with laughing cow cheese.  Get a food scale if you don't already have one so you can actually measure out the correct portion sizes.  As PP said, skinnytaste.com is great for healthy recipes as well as emilybites.com.  I'm actually a huge advocate of weight watchers as well.  I did online only (no meetings) and it works great if you follow it.

  • I am also struggling to lose the baby weight this time. I know what needs to be done but I seem to lack the motivation. I am trying to get down to the weight that I was at when I met SO by next summer (so 40lbs in 12 months).
Drinking lots of water, moderate exercise with strength training, upping my fruit/veg intake and portion control (can not stress how important it is) is what works for me. Also when I feel hungry I drink a glass of water before eating. Often when we feel hungry it is just early signs of dehydration. Oh and I food track, it holds me more accounrable for what I am eating.

  • I just weighed myself and was not happy with the number. I have been telling myself that I need to lose weight for months. I will have several good days where I eat lots of fruit, veggies, and protein. Then I have several bad days. I think the good days have helped me from gaining more than what I have. I am at the weight I was prepregnancy, but 10 lbs higher than my post pregnancy weight. I had gestational diabetes, so I lost weight during pregnancy once I started eating low carb. I survived low carb/sugar during pregnancy and know I can survive it now. I just need to get motivated to eat healthy and move more.

I agree with previous posters to eat a lot of protein. Also, watch portions. Portion control has always been one of my weaknesses. Also, I have been successfull with WW several times. Journal what you eat to hold yourself accountable, too. Now that I have said that I need to do that all myself.

I've noticed that even with my older kids that I really have a hard time losing weight while nursing. It seems the moment I start to exercise more than normal or cut calories, it impacts my supply...

I also lost no weight bfing. Ww saved me. I have lost 17 dive starting. I was one who never thought about what I eat. Ww really opened my eyes to that. I no longer want to eat those chips because I know how many points they are, and they just are not worth it. I have found other things that fill me up on less points like hummus. Gl!

  • Shit I haven't been back today. I am only 5'4. I do love eating protein and have been getting active with the kids lately. I will be participating in the check-ins. Thanks everyone.

Aaand there goes LO crying again. :(( enough already.
  • I am a dietitian and I feel your pain!  I (incorrectly) thought that I would be so active and be in great shape by now.  My expectations were probably too high.  I'm back do down at pre-baby weight, but goodness, it doesn't look the same anymore! I've really started buckling down in the past few weeks.  My supply seems to really dip when I cut too many calories, so I've been focusing on lean proteins to avoid the snacking throughout the day and my supply has actually been better.

Your best bet is to focus on behavior modification.  Make a goal each week that is SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely).  For example, instead of saying, “I want to lose weight”, try, “for the next 14 days, I want to eat 3 servings of fruit per day”.  Don’t change anything else about your typical intakes. Once you are able to maintain that goal, make a new one (“I will walk for 30 minutes 3 days for the next month” “I will only have 1 soda per day this week and 3 sodas total for the week next week” ) and keep on going!  Becoming healthier is about more than just numbers  on a scale.  Nutrition works with the laws of averages.  If you have a bad day, that doesn’t mean anything is “ruined”.  It means you have another opportunity to try again tomorrow to meet your goal.

I personally have a hard time if there are sweets/desserts/junk around.  If it’s there, I will eat it. So we try to have a lot more healthy options then sweets in the house.  Right now, we use a lot of foods from the local farmer’s market each week.  We don’t want to waste our money and have the food go bad, so we have to eat it.

It may be helpful to schedule an outpatient visit with a registered dietitian as well—They can help hold you accountable since maintenance of new habits is the hardest part.  Most people tend to do better with making lifestyle changes if they are being held accountable for their choices.

Also, feel free to PM me if you need anything!  Making these positive changes is hard work!

  • I know I don't eat healthy at all, but I also don't even have chips, cookies, etc in my house. Weird. Lol. My biggest issue is portion sizes. I eat the right amount of XX food and 20 min later I'm starving and eat another portion. I need to learn control. Also money is an issue or I would have a dietitian here. And I don't have a car so leaving for anything is out. But I just need to stay motivated and do it! I'm hoping the check-in will keep me to it. 200 lbs really is WAY too much for someone that is 5'4. @greenbeanqueen‌ (height for you)
  • I'm 5'4 also.

    Portion control is hard.
I'm glad we are doing the check in weekly it will help me with motivation big time.

  • @sweetsyrup‌ I knew there was an RD around here but I couldn't remember who it was! I'm in my senior year and looking at internships now.
  • I find writing down what you eat helps. I also recommed weight watchers. I love their program.

  • @pashedmotatoes‌ I could have written your OP. Same weights, losses and gains and everything. I am 5'5" and this shit is so FRUSTRATING. It is hard for me to be active due to chronic fatigue. I try to eat my best but every time I eat well and still gain it makes me want to eat crappy food even more. I feel like I am watching my health go down the drain and I'm powerless to stop it.

I just wanted to let you know you're not alone, it's scary how much your story is like mine. Stalking this thread. And PM me anytime.

I am having a hard time with losing weight too. I'm taking a fitness class 3 days a week that I really love. I just started in June and it is helping a lot. I think the key is to find something that is fun so you will look forward to working out. It always helps to incorporate the baby too! I really like going on walks with LO. Try an app like Runkeeper. I love using it to track all of my workouts.
  • @mamagplus4chix I hope that helps you stick with it! I was paying almost $20/month for WW online and a lot of that was a waste of money because I just wouldn't track the food when I ate bad, which was like 80% of the time, so I finally cancelled last month.

Weren't you counting calories while we were pregnant because you didn't want to get fat?
