baby carriers

Let's discuss which brands/types whatever of baby carriers you are going to use. There are so many different options out there and I'd like to hear what worked well for others/what people are going to go with the first time. So let's hear pros and cons.

Ergo: I liked it. Durable, ok comfy wise, but did start to hurt my back after awhile. I never mastered the back carry position. I had the infant insert and used it when DS was little, but friends have told me they just as easily rolled up a blanket to support the little one. I didn't use it inside; it felt like a backpack to me and so I only used it for walks and things like that. Recommend.

K'tan: I read in a review to order a size smaller because the material stretches. Uh, I ordered an XS and there was no way my post partum body and my 95% er newborn were going to fit into it. Never used it and do not recommend. Maybe if it fit I would.

Was it easy to learn how to wrap it? I've read there is a ton of fabric.

  • I'm glad you recommend the Ergo I bought one this weekend.

I had a cousin who wore all her kids and really likes the Maya wrap, I mean to the point she wore her first one and I don't think anyone else held him.

  • I have a boba wrap. Love it for a NB. Very stretchy so you wrap it tight to your body and then slip the baby in. I recommend pre-tying at home over trying to put it on in a parking lot. For me it wasn't easy to nurse in. So comfortable but a little warm. You are basically swaddling your baby right up to you.

I also have a Boba 3G. I used this more starting around 4-5 months and have been using it ever since. The stirrups are great now that my DS is bigger. We've gotten quite a lot of use out of it. I wore him on the front for a long time, but eventually he got tall enough that it was hard to see around his head. Wearing him on my back has been great for hiking and doing house chores with a fussy baby.

I also have a ring sling that I got from Sleeping Baby Productions. I didn't have it until my son was 4.5 month old so I'm excited to try it out with a little one. I think it will be very convenient especially for using out of the house and I think it will be easy to nurse in.

I have heard amazing things about the Tula, so I plan on getting it in the gray chevron.  You can also use it for a toddler (well, hubby can use it when baby is a toddler).  You can also rent it to test it out.

I thought it was easy.  I know when we bought it there was a couple at BRU trying to talk us out of buying one because it was too difficult and they returned their's.

When I got home, I read the instructions and had no problems at all.
  • I LOVE MY BABY K'TAN! It comes in 5 different size options though so it's really important to find the right one. I found that my weight loss countered my baby's weight gain post partum so it worked well. My husband got one but I bought him XL and it's huge so I'm sewing it smaller for him with baby number 2. Also my baby K'TAN was super comfy and my son loved it!

SNUGLI: I hated it. My baby's legs went straight, not cuddling me. And it hurt my shoulders.
  • I had a Moby and I hated it. Too much fabric. I will go with the K'tan this time around.

The site says from 15-45 lbs. My DD wasn't 15 pounds for at least 5 months so I don't think this would work for me. She was a SLOW gainer and even now at 2 years only weighs 23 lbs.

  • I consider the money wrap essential. I would tie it in the morning and then put the baby in after we arrived at wherever we drove to. I never lugged around the stupid baby car seat. Hate that. Lots of fabric, yes, but very comfy. I liked my black one, very chic. If I was just doing a quick trip I would throw my hotsling (basic pocket sling) in my bag to wear the baby wherever we were going. Could nurse in both.

Baby wearing newborns is essential IMO. And beyond. The ergo is my favourite for when they outgrow the moby. Fast and easy. Durable. Comfortable.
  • Moby - Loved from 0-4 months and saved my life

Beco Gemini - Loved.  Supportive, comfortable, easy to use.  But he outgrew around 9/10 months

Ergo - Didn't work for me, I found it uncomfortable

Lillebaby Complete - Bought when he outgrew the Beco.  I adore this carrier and can still comfortably carry him at 21 months.  It's pretty much the best features of the Beco and Ergo combined.  It also had a lumbar support pad which makes a huge difference.

I will be getting a Ring Sling for this babe and a Tula Toddler.  We are trying to get by without a double so I figure there will be times when babe needs to be worn and time when the toddler needs to be worn.

  • Hmm that maya wrap looks interesting. But is it, or any other of the ring versions, truly hands free? I've seen moms using these and they usually have one hand supporting the baby. Anyone use a mei tei? I bought that one for a friend's shower bc it was pretty cheap but I thought it looked comfy too. Sorry for lack of paragraphs (ipad).

I almost posted these exact words. I know some people love the Moby, but I was never coordinated enough. I loved the Ergo for when DD was 4+ mos.  We still use it for hiking and times I don't want to use the stroller (she's 19 mos.) and plan to continue through toddler years.
  • Me wearing Cezar out in The moby wrap when he was about a week old. Easy to nurse on the go. DH liked wearing him too.

The K'tan - I tried the summer version (breeze, maybe?) and couldn't get a good fit. I exchanged it for a fabric one and liked it, but I only used it a handful of times with DD because she was born in July in Texas and it was just too warm for me. She tended to cry in it, but I think I just didn't use it enough to where she was comfortable. I'm hoping to use it more with this LO, especially since we'll be running around after my DD.

Moby - I have a borrowed Moby and never used it, partially because of the Texas heat in July. It wasn't hard to use, particularly, but the other carriers I had were so much easier (and less fabric), that it would have been my last choice.

Ring sling - my DD loved being in a ring sling, but I didn't put her in one until she could hold her head up. She would nap in it in the front carry position facing me. I mostly used it around the house when I needed to get some work done (I work from home and had DD home with me until she was 7 months old). I wouldn't have used it with a newborn, and it never felt as secure as the K'tan or the Ergo, but I liked it.

Ergo - I tried the newborn insert, but my DD hated it and didn't really come around on the Ergo until she was about 8 months old. That said, I still use it on occasion and love it now. I flew with my DD a few weeks ago solo, and I don't know what I would have done without it! It does feel like a backpack, though.

I ordered a Beco Gemini and loved it, but it was expensive, and since my DD didn't instantly love it, I returned it. I may get one this time - we'll see.

Tulas come in 2 sizes, baby and toddler. I think you can use a rolled blanket until they hit the weight minimum with the baby size like an ergo. I have a toddler size that I use with DS now and it's wonderful. He technically hasn't quite outgrown the ergo but after using the tula it just seems small.

I love both the ergo and tula. I hated the moby wrap, it was super hot for me even in March in MN. I hope to find a sling of some kind for new baby.

Ergo! It's so comfortable we still love it at almost 2 years old.

Had a Bjorn but all the weight hangs from your shoulders so it's not ergonomic after the early infant phase. Plus baby's hips are not supported. I wouldn't recommend.

That's what is confusing me. It says it has a newborn insert but is good from 15 lbs on. DD was born at 6 lbs.

  • Yeah please no bjorns or cheap versions of bjorns. Baby wearers who know better are all silently scorning you and trying not to throw up in their mouths
  • What carriers are good for plus sized moms?
Ergos and Tulas are both easily adjustable and fit a variety of body types. DH is a foot taller than me and double my weight but he can use both of those. Target & Babies R Us both have the ergo, maybe you can try one on in the store?

If adjusted correctly yes they can be hands free. I find that I naturally keep a hand there a lot of times just as a habit. Kind of like how pregnant women hold their bellies I guess.

  • @yamrwhite I eta that I think you can use a rolled blanket in a Tula like you can in an Ergo. Tula also sells an infant insert for 7.5 lbs. That's kind of why I want a sling this time around, the ergo was not great until DS was about 12 lbs. I liked it even more when he had better neck control.

Ugh that makes it even pricier!! Bummer...it's really cute and looks great but I don't want to spend that much.

  • I was also trinking about trying a lalabu shirt this time. Does anyone have any personal knowledge about them? They are pretty new on the market I think.
  • Action baby carriers are pretty nice and not too pricey. They aren't very bulky and you have the option to cross the straps when you are carrying on the front.

  • I have used many different carriers over the years and made my best decision when I bought the ERGO SPORT. It has more room than the standard ergo to accommodate my heavier chested body and fluffier mid section. I never bought an infant insert, grated I have slightly larger babies than average but have used since a couple of weeks old until the kids prefer stroller.
Still immune to tickers. Polite Canadian 99% of the time. SAHM of 7 soon to be 8. I read more than I post.

I checked out the ergo and it looks just like the Tula. You can get a carrier and an infant insert bundle for $135 which is a little better. I might go that route but even that is more than I want to spend. DD wasn't a huge fan of being carried past 6 months. Hoping this kid isn't the same or worse!

First time around I bought a Moby (I still have it and will try it again)... I was a little annoyed by figuring out how to get it on right but turned out my DS was really fussy in it and didn't like being so contained anyway... he didn't much like the swaddle either so.. I didn't wear him much.

I'm really hoping this baby is different and does well with wearing because I'm sure it'll make my life much easier while toting two LOs around.  I will try the Moby again in the beginning because I think it's great at the itty bitty stage...but I am also going to buy an Ergo and try that out for long term.

  • I loved the ktan for the early months as have an Ergo that I back carry my son in and a baby hawk mei tai that I now also back carry. I hope to get a ring sling and a woven wrap this go around.

Also, moby's are really only good up to 15lbs and no back carris because they are a stretchy wrap.

LOVE my K'Tan!! Ordered it in my normal shirt size. It stretches great as needed, but can be put in the dryer to shrink it back down. Perfect for the newborn stage through maybe 25 lbs. B would always fall asleep in it.

Bought an ergo when B was 9 months old. It was definitely more comfy as he got heavier. DH prob used this one more than the K'tan... back-carrying in super-convenient.

Since you have time, Ergos tend to hit the sales sites periodically (Zulily, Gilt, etc).  Also the Gray Galaxy ones are all on sale at Targets right now since they are discontinuing that print.  Your odds of getting an Ergo at less than retail are pretty good if you wait for the right time!

Unfortunately the same can't be said for Tulas.  They sell used for almost the same price new!

  • Tulas have higher backs than Ergos which is good long-term. I have an ergo but only used it maybe 3 times with my son. I am in love with the idea of using a woven wrap, and if I can ever manage to sell my Ergo, I'm going to try one out.

As for knock-off Ergos, I heard the problem with those is that they are not safety tested like real brands are, so people have issues with like, buckles breaking, stitching ripping, etc.

  • Ktan was/is my favorite.
In the original I boughta size smaller due to stretch. With the breeze I ordered my normal size that's recommended.
I still use my ktan and it's my husband's favorite too.

Maya wrap (ring sling) is my favorite for him being older *1 year* because I carry him on my hip so it's comfortable.

Ergo is alright. I hate it for the nb stage. In fact, we've never worn it out of the house.
I bought it for Dh, but he'd rather have the ktan.
The ergo will be better for older kids IMHO.
I still feel my lo is so little for it. He's only 17 lbs though. Maybe I'll try back carry with it.

Ring Sling for NB phase - either a Sakura Bloom or a custom from Sleeping Baby Productions.

Then a Tula once baby is bigger.
