I wish. My husband is a doctor & is NOT. OK. with home birth. We actually got into a heated debate about water birth after the recent ACOG statement came out, and he informed me he's not ok with that, either. I found a group of midwives who are supposed to be the best for low-intervention hospital birth around here... they were the only ones who allowed water birth in our city until the damn ACOG statement, so hubs gets his way for this one--in hospital, on land. I've been to one home birth & many hospital ones, and the home birth was absolutely magical. Hope yours goes smoothly!
Aw! i am sorry thats so hard! i know when people are in the medical field they get pre send with a lot of stuff so its harder for them to let our bodies do their thing. Thank you! i loved my last two. first one was one the bed at home but my last one was a water birth, in my opinion SO much easier, the water really helps!
I'm sorry if i offend y'all. that was not my intention. so please don't be rude. Looking for other positive moms who want to support each other on this amazing journey of pregnancy and home birth.
After everything that went wrong with my first birth, I would never even consider it. Does real life count as "negativity"?
Not at all! i am NOT against hospital birth. especially for those who need it, and i wouldn't blame you! if things went bad my first one i wouldn't do it again! i am sorry things went wrong with the first one! that really stinks!

Give support to get it around here. There is a lot of support and are a lot of positive moms, but, every person who jumps on the board doesn't get that support just because. Did you see that in a clause somewhere when you signed up?
You said something filled with ignorance and prejudice. TB doesn't forget.
Again, you can't dictate how people respond to you so stop asking people to not say things you don't like.
Not for me. I'm too far from the hospital (approx. 1 hr) if anything, god forbid, went wrong.
Oh wow! that is far! i know with me if i did hospital birth i would have to live next door because my babies come so fast! i would never make it to our local hospital! do y'all stay some where near the hospital when you are close to your due date? just out of curiosity, that would be a heck of a drive while in labor : /

I live an hour away from my hospital, but my first baby took over 36 hours to come. So I should have plenty of time, lol.
Makes sense. My first labor was 3 hours (mainly pushing) because he was big and my second labor was about 60 minutes start to finish my midwife walked in the door and about 45 seconds later we had a sweet little boy crying in my arms!
My hospital is less than 5 miles down the road. I'm taking advantage of that shit. No way I want to clean up placenta and fluids all up in my apartment.

Musta been nice! I hope that midwife didn't charge you full price. ;-)
haha nope! they were awesome! and my insurance covered all the cost when they were billed so we got all out money back plus the midwife got paid extra as well, so needless to say they love being out midwives! The did just build brand new amazing hospital where we live and its in town and has amazing nicu center so i now have a closer option if something happened!
@bagonzalez90 I think home births are awesome but I don't see me doing one. I am sorry you couldn't get your husband on board with it. I plan on trying for a med free VBAC this go round. What did ACOG say about water births though? I haven't heard anything about this...

I think you meant to tag me in this... here's a post about it. Basically ACOG came out with an opinion statement which said water birth is an experimental practice that should only be offered as part of a research study, but there is no solid evidence to support their conclusion. Their fear-mongering statement effectively shut down water birth at my hospital.

Yes that was for @ark83. i am looking that info up as well. Vbac? thats awesome! i hope it all goes well for you! at the end of the day no matter how they get here we have beautiful babies in our ams!

I recently moved so I won't be at the same hospital as I was with DS (which, btw, was still 30 mins away!. With DS I was induced due to pre-E therefore it was not an issue but I'm not sure what my plan will be when I get close to my due date this time around...hope for the best?!? I know a TON of my friends around here go to the same place and it hasn't been an issue. Maybe I'll be delivering in my car like those stories you hear about on the Today Show
@mangomimosa thats crazy that they have that now! i know my second birth was a water birth but I labored for the first part walking around and then got in the tub during transition it helped with the pushing and the delivery of the baby.
@sdion27 wow! haha ya i know! that would be me delivering in the car. haha. there was one in Houston very recently that the dad got on the go pro camera. i enjoy being at home and not having to move if i had to get in the car and ride i would be crazy haha!
@bagonzalez90 - this is my first pregnancy, but I was present for the birth of my girlfriend's last two children. One was in hospital and one was a water birth. The water birth was amazing and she loved it. She was cozied up with her LO in her own bed within minutes! Anyway, I'm sure I don't have to tell you this as you have had previous home births, but her experience was awesome. It certainly isn't for everyone, but I think I would consider it for a second birth. The first makes me too nervous at this point.
I have an appointment on Monday with a midwife. If I get accepted I'll be having a home birth. I do have a friend who is an EMS and he is begging me to not have the baby at home. Seriously I did not merry you and your not the one pushing this baby out! I also have lots of friends who have had home births out of 6 births in the last 2 1/2 years only one had to go to the hospital part way through because baby had her hands up and the mother was to small to push her out like that.

Thats so awesome! I truly enjoyed both of mine! yes home birth isn't for everyone! I got the most heat from family with my first pregnancy, they thought I was crazy and wanted me to go to the hospital for the first birth, so I understand that! Especially because a first time mom/pregnancy is like wandering into a land of unknown haha, you really don't know what its like, people can explain and you can read and watch stuff ALL day on labor and birth but until YOU experience it for yourself its hard to grasp what you will go through and how you will feel and all that stuff! I hope all goes well and maybe one day you will get to experience home birth if thats your thing!

Thats so awesome!!! I hope the appointment goes well! haha. people in the medical field see all the bad stuff that happen due to MANY different things that we can't always predict, so I think they tend to be more in fear and in the "What If's". But as long as a women's body is in good health and the midwife has amazing statistics its worth it! Some things do happen but the midwives are trained to handle it all but there are those midwives who do take more risk then necessary : /, i am very thankful I have an awesome midwife! My first baby had one hand by his face and MAN was that hard I can't imagine two hands by the babies head! I also was very anemic with my first and my midwife was very close to sending me to an obgyn if i didn't take my iron and get my levels up, so she was wise about that and serious haha needles to say i took the iron supplements! I did have a small complication after my first birth, I hemorrhaged and passed out but they handled it SO well! they gave me some piton and got me fluids and food and made me lay a certain way and I LOVED the fact that the midwife stay all day just to keep an eye on me. It is definitely a more personal experience, they really get to know you and answer all your questions! I think its amazing! all that being said : ) i hope it goes well!
@bagonzalez90@mangomimosa whoops! Sorry about that! This will be my 2nd VBAC. My first VBAC (last kiddo) went extremely well, after I fought with the on call doctor about going straight into a c-section. I don't want to spend the first 8 hours in labor fighting with someone on call again!

No, midwives are not trained to handle it all. There is absolutely a difference in the level of medical training between an OB and a midwife. And if multiple medical professionals (EMTs and doctors) are begging people to reconsider plans for a home birth, perhaps there's some merit to their argument.

She said her EMT friend asked her to reconsider... if a doctor says someone is not healthy enough to give birth at home then the midwife won't even consider taking them as a client. Thats why she has a first appointment to see if she is approved or not. No midwives can not provide EVERYTHING a hospital doctor provides but thats why they only take on clients that are not high risk. Midwives do still go through a lot of school and a lot of hand on training in order to practice in their field. my midwife has been to over 200 birth and only had to transport to the hospital 3 times. For those who are healthy enough and want to do home birth i think its awesome.
I have already been labeled as a low risk by my doctor and yes if I was at risk for anything that my doctor can see she would not allow me to see a midwife. The midwives would not accept me either. Midwives are not trained to handle everything (c-section as an example) but they are fully trained nurses and they have extra specific training on top of it for birth. I would like to know how many nurses and doctors in hospitals have seen a natural birth. Quite frankly from what I have heard it's very few which does not sit well with me.
THANK YOU!!! I was trying to hold my tongue, bc in my experience, this argument never goes anywhere, but midwives are absolutely NOT trained to handle everything. And I am a living example of a perfectly healthy pregnancy and a near-disastrous birth. It is absolutely not predictable based on the apparent health of the mother. So much can and does go wrong. Yes, childbirth it's a "natural" process, but it's a natural process that kills many, many mothers and babies without the proper medical care (and sometimes even with it). It's easy to say that it's safe or whatever when it's never happened to you, and I'm glad so many women go through it without complications, but most of that is due to luck, and I for one am not going to play those odds with my own or my baby's life.
Ditto. I hemorrhaged in both births out of nowhere. Also, I had a stroke after DD1 was born. I think, if you want to risk a home birth, that's your call. But don't pretend that it's not without it's risks.
Of course! there are risks with everything. everyone risks their lives getting into a car and driving down a high away. we all just have to know the risks we face and make the best choice for us and our family. hospital or home birth women are amazing, we grow these little humans and nurture them and we let our bodies take the hit to bring new life into this world, it so awesome what we as women can handle!
@south_myst my apologies. I meant birth without intervention of medicine. I know it has it's place my mother I law had c-section with all 3 of her boys because they were to big. However I do believe that modern medicine is very overused and women are being told that they can't do it and need to rely on it way more than they should.
Every one has their right to choose which birth plan they want. : ) Home birth, hospital, scheduled induction or c-section. everyone is able to do their own research and make a decision based off what they are most comfortable with and the rock it from there! i enjoy any birth story because its a new life being brought into this world no matter the means of delivery. We are all mommas bringing babies into this world and we should be able to support each other in our journeys not matter what route we all choose.
Now, I realize the fact that this is a facility that promotes water birth, so probably skewed, but what they say does appear to make sense.
Do we have anyone here in the field that could weigh in on this? I am leaning toward a water birth, at the hospital or a birthing center, but would like to have all the facts I can get my hands on first.
