BF/EP& STTN

For those of you who BF and pump for a stash or EP, if your LO is sleeping a good chunk, do you wake up and pump? I typically would pump 4-5 oz in the morning, but DD was only giving me a 3-4 hour stretch. For the past 3 nights, she's slept anywhere from 6-9 hours at night. I've had to get up between hours 5-6 and pump because I'm so engorged. What should I be doing? I only pump one boob and do the other to relieve engorgement because I know she'll be up to eat eventually. I feel like this is a wash because I still have to pump even though she is sleeping longer stretches. Help!

  • Your supply will regulate. Unless you want to pump and make a stash. Just sucks because they sleep but we get uncomfortable.

Do you add formula at all or is lo only getting bm?
  • Loading the player...
  • Only BM. I have a little over 100 oz in the freezer. She starts daycare in 4 weeks. I'd just like the benefit of these long stretches as well...

  • @Lissiehoya‌ - yeah, that makes sense. I woke up because I was leaking. I seem to wake up no matter what between 3-4am now because that is when DD used to wake for MOTN feed. Now it's 4:30-5:30 am and my boobs can't make it that long.

I will say that I can pump 4-5 oz in minutes so at least I'm not hooked up for 20+ on the machine.

  • @Lissiehoya‌ - ugh, I'm sorry. I hate that machine. I had to do the same thing about 2 weeks ago. Good news is that it worked for me and supply went back up. Hope the same goes for you!

  • Ds is starting to go longer and I would get uncomfortable. Last night was his longest and it was 5 hours and it wasn't so bad.

Looks like they are letting us stock up on sleep before the 4 monther.
  • I was an ep er but am slowly drying up and transitioning to formula, I sleep thru the night without pumping now but my supply has drastically dwindled so if you have supply issues and don't want to stop breastfeeding yet I would get up and pump

That would put her in a vicious cycle of having to get up and pump. Babies needs change throughout the first year and as much as it is uncomfortable ones supply needs to regulate.

That being said her lo is going to day care and will require a stash. But maybe there is a better time to pump and get some sleep. Unless she wants to do it her supply would be fine.

But then again when lo goes to day care that's a whole different story as she won't bf all day. Or maybe she will switch to formula.

Maybe I should stop speculating and @Jcrewgirl85‌ can fill us in on her plans :) just for the sake of being nosey now :)

    Lol @florassecret‌

We do have a freezer stash now of
105 oz. I go back to work Aug 18. Before she started sleeping longer, I would feed her one breast during MOTN feed and offer her the second. She would typically wake up again between 7-8 where I would feed her that same first breast. Other breast would be pumped and I'd get 4-5 oz. This was usually the only time I pumped and 9x out of 10, we'd freeze unless someone needed to feed DD and I wasn't there.

So now, I'm basically pumping one boob but it's 4 hours earlier. I don't pump again at 8am. When I go back to work, I'll need to leave the house at 6:30 so I'll need to feed her around 5am. DH will feed her before dropping her off at daycare between 8-9am. I'm sure I'll end up waking up around 5 to pump one breast and nurse her from the other. She never takes both breasts (draining both) for MOTN feed.
Sorry if this was long and confusing.

ETA: the plan is to use BM as long as possible. I don't plan on using formula.

  • I would sleep. When DD1 dropped night feedings it took 2 days for my supply to regulate and not be engorged over the longer stretches. You have a huge stash already so no need for the extra pumping sessions. Remember all you really need to go back to work is enough milk for the first day, then in theory you pump at work and get enough for the next day.

I have around 300 oz stashed... So I've stopped pumping MOTN. My LC said as long as I'm getting at least an oz an hour I shouldn't worry about my supply dropping and just let the engorgement adjust. So, I feed 5-6 then pump to see what I get after every couple of days to gage it. ( just to ease my mind honestly ) Last time he ate, then I pumped 8 oz on top of it, so I'm reassured, my stash got a little love, and my boobs don't hurt.

Agree with this. I would sleep. If needed you can express a little for comfort while your body regulates.
  • I EP, but I try to follow LO's lead, I pump when she eats, so if she's STTN, then so am I.

I EP and I used to pump after a MOTN feeding, but now that he goes longer stretches I pump before I go to bed (around 11) and in the morning (around 6 or 7). My supply has regulated and maintained just fine with the adjustment.

  • I second PP. Now that dude STTN I pump right before bed and in the morning first thing making sure to completely empty my breasts. The first few nights I still woke up around his normal time but I forced myself back to sleep thinking he would get up soon after (he didn't).

It was painful for a few days but now I can go all night and not be in excruciating pain in the morning just normal engorgement. My supply is still great I've been stashing about 12-18oz a day in the freezer still and I'm down to pumping 7 times in 24 hours.
