Nervous about the first US. Could it be twins??

I haven't gained any weight since the initial ten pounds almost as soon as I found out I'm pregnant but I'm already in maternity pants! Even my cousin, who has twins, made that comment to me... I seem to be farther along in the symptom department too. Twins run in my family like crazy, my mother is an identical twin and it skips a generation in her family. For those that say identical's aren't a genetics thing, tell that to the multiple generations in my family that this pattern has followed. Then on my dad's side there are several fraternal twins. They also run in my boyfriend's family (although I know that poses less of a factor). This is my first pregnancy. I'm really nervous about this!

  • Twins are always a possibility in any pregnancy.... but we do have a higher than normal instance of them on this board.

A lot of women here are in maternity pants already. The size of the blump =/= multiples or anything else. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water every day. I looked 4mo pregnant at 7 weeks, but drinking 2L+ of water has reduced the bloat considerably.

  • Thanks! I'm not sure I've been drinking enough water.
  • Only fraternal twins are genetic, and your boyfriends families twins doesn't make a difference.

  • I read that symptoms are way worse with multiples (I wouldn't know) so if you're MS and fatigue win out as worst against everyone you know than it could be twins.

  • From a science perspective, fraternal twins are genetic. It has to do with a women releasing more than one egg when ovulating. This also happens as you age as well, you tend to release more than one egg. Identical twins are spontaneous. I thought I may have been having twins last pregnancy (symptoms were so much worse than first two) and fraternal twins runs in my family, but I only had one in there. You won't know until your first u/s. Try not to worry about it too much. Try to stay stress free.

  • I've always heard that women pregnant with twins have very intense morning sickness, and I have had very little, so it never even crossed my mind! I also don't have twins anywhere in our family! However at our 8 wk appointment we found out that were having twins! I guess it can happen to anyone!
  • I have no MS and am 10 weeks witb twins so thats not always the case. My only more intense symptoms this pregnancy is super sore boobs and intense hunger. But twins run in both sides of my family so lucky me! Good luck with your u/s!

  • Thanks everyone! My U/S is on the 31st, so I'll find out soon enough I guess. And identical's can be genetic, they are every other generation on my mother's side for about ten generations back, all identical. My mother is one, so that leaves my generation to have one, the chances of it being my first would be crazy though. lol. Either way, I'm just hoping for a healthy baby, or two. :-)

My husbands family has identical twins every other generation. There has to be a genetic trend science hasn't figured out yet. My husband is the identical twin tho and if we continue the pattern, our daughter would have identical twin boys as well.

Btw I don't know anything about my bio dad so I'm constantly thinking I may have twins. I know I would be happy eventually but I would cry at first...
