Weekly GD Check In!

Re: Weekly GD Check In!

  • @MagentaMouse .  I don't think mine is enough because my fasting numbers have been in the 115-130 so I am not sure about the half-life.  My numbers are so high compared to yours... :-/

  • lrobi13, but you're several weeks ahead of me! I'm sure I'll be popping glyburide like m&ms by the time I'm 29 weeks along. If it's anything like last time, my GD will kick into full force pretty soon here. I started the glyburide around 26-27 weeks last time (I can't remember how long I tried to be diet-controlled) and had to ramp up the dose really quickly.

Yes, I keep forgetting that the weeks matter in this case.  Dang ole placenta!  They only let me try diet controlled for a week and a half.  My body is not playing nice.  I know that is the case but it just frustrates me because I have been trying really hard.

I told DH when I have this baby I want to go to TCBY and just put my mouth under the spigot!

  • @lrobi13 I am not really sure about the "half life". I did notice about 30 minutes after I took it I felt pretty shaky. So I have been happily drinking my soda. It will be interesting to see what my pre-lunch number look like as that is what has been running high.

DH and I were talking yesterday about how well I had done for 23w. No insulin or anything. I just watched my diet and exercise. I even lost 10 to 15 lbs through the this time. So to just now have to go on something and to have gained 2lbs at my last OB appt. 2 weeks ago. I think I am doing good.

  • Is it bad that they didn't diagnose me until now?  I only had the one hour at 27 weeks.

I am so grateful that this thread exists!  I am going to be asking a ton of questions, I guarantee it!  My OB called today and wants me to go in, so hopefully, I will get the ball rolling today on how to treat this.

No, they typically don't test people for it until around 28 weeks.  My doc tested my at 26 weeks because she thought I probably would have it and she was right.  Apparently this is when the placenta really starts releasing hormones that interfere with the sugars and insulin.

Agreed - it's not that likely that you developed it so long ago that it would matter. I started testing my glucose months before I got pregnant with this one, and my numbers during this pregnancy (until recently) have actually been lower than they were non-pregnant. I was worried about the same thing when my GTTs were so bad at 26 weeks! But DD was 7 lbs 11 oz, and she's very tall, so I'm sure all was well before my dx.

Normally they test around now. For me I am T2 not pregnant. So they got me in to get everything going early. You will see that some of us are T1 or T2 not pregnant so we have been here a while.

Also please ask away. That is what we are here for. Support, freak out session, you name it.

Most women aren't diagnosed until this point.  Personally, I was tested early (18 weeks) due to pre-existing Insulin Resistance (PCOS) and being in Metformin for 11 years.  I was at much higher risk of developing GD so they wanted to catch it early.

I wish they had tested me earlier, because I felt like something wonky was going on with my blood sugar in the morning--and with both my parents being diabetic.  But, I really did start noticing the sweating and weird groggy sleeping the last couple of weeks.

And @dreadgamerwife we seem to have the same due date;)

  • @megaddie  With that family history, I am surprised they didn't test you early as well.  But I think a lot depends on the medical philosophy of the OB/Midwife.  I started going to the MFM early in the pregnancy (for other issues) and they were the ones wanting early testing - my OB probably wouldn't have tested me that early without their request (she had planned to test me around 24 weeks, not 18 weeks).

  • megaddie, if you're really worried about it, you could always have your A1C tested. The number you get back is the percentage of your hemoglobin that has sugar on it, and it's usually representative of your average glucose level over the last 3 months. There are a few things that can artificially lower your result (like anemia), but it's probably worth doing.

  • I asked my doctor today and she said that during my first trimester, they screened me for un diagnosed diabetes, so I'm feeling okay...they also gave me my meter and everything and scheduled me for a class next week. Is it hard to figure out the meter on your own? I'd like to start testing right away...they were all very supportive and assured me that they were going to be watching me and that my numbers were only slightly over so I should be fine. Fingers crossed.

  • Hi everyone
I just found out that I have to restrict by diet. I'm not officially GD yet, my official diagnosis is Carbohydrate intolerance. I failed hour 2 of the glucose tolerance but not the others. So far the plan is just to diet control and test 4 times a day post meals. Today is day one so it's still really new, although I'm already missing the idea of a chocolate frappe. I'm really just hoping that I can continue to watch my diet.
    Hope you are all well.

You can find YouTube videos for anything these days, so maybe start there. I think it's fairly easy to pick up an unfamiliar meter, but I've been doing this for 30+ years. So my opinion is skewed. :-D

I would 2nd the Youtubing. The only thing I would say. If you are squimsh about blood do it sitting down. When I did mine for the first time. I almosted passed out on the lady. She calmy sat there and talked me down. I am not squimsh about my onw blood, but just learning how to test and what to expect was so overwelming for me. It sent me over the edge.

Once you get the hang of it. It is no problem IMO.

  • Holy Cow Batman. Low BS numbers SUCK! It was 62 when I finally checked it. I had the sweats, dizzy, I did not get out of bed for an hour. I tossed and turned. Now with some soda, 4 starburst, and a piece of thin crust pizza I am feeling Meh.

  • Morning all--started testing today. I watched a YouTube video, but honestly, the directions were enough. My am level was 73 and then an hour after breakfast (I walked my dog for 20 minutes), I was 96. Those seem good? I guess I will get feedback on Wednesday at my class!

  • Those sound pretty good. I can not get my fasting numbers that low. Just watch for any numbers below 65. That is low blood sugar and from what I experieced yesterday are NO FUN!

Also in the news this week was an interesting study about how keeping your bedroom at 66 degrees while you sleep is good for helping regulate blood sugar and insulin resistance. Not that I'm about to crank my AC down that low and pay crazy electricity bills in the summer, but I do let it get that cold in the winter.

  • Ladies, I have what may be a very stupid question. If you have GD, are your babies measuring larger than normal % wise? I have heard they tend to be larger but was wondering if you could measure small or very small with GD. Thank you.

  • Great articles ladies. Thanks for sharing.
  • @MrsL2B I have heard that GD babies do have a tendency to weigh more then others do. As of right now. I don't think mine is large. I am close to my 24th week so I will get another U/S on Friday and will make sure to ask about weight.

I have checked with my OB and she said that she may induce me a week early because of the GD and weight. As it gets closer I will know more.

  • New to this check in. Just found out last Monday that I failed my 3 hour glucose test. I am currently 29w3d with twin girls. I have been waiting for the hospital to call and tell me "what is next" but haven't heard anything yet.

My results were---passed fasting by 1 point, failed 1 hour by 8 points, failed 2 hour by 1 point, passed 3 hour by 1 point. SIGH

Check In:   How is the diet going?  Any challenges that we can help out with?  Any new recipes/ successes that you want to share?  Rant/Vent about the lack of ice cream? My diet has not really changed as of yet. Not sure what they want me to do.

QOTW:    Now that we are approaching the 3rd trimester (if not already there), anything you wish you did during the 2nd trimester (and didn’t do)? My 3rd trimester is here...thank god. but there is nothing I can think of. I have been tired for all 3 trimesters so haven't really had the energy to do much of anything since I was about 10 weeks along. YAY TWINS

  • @shelly2314‌ . We were able to find a diet online that was fairly similar to what I was told to do by the nurse and dietician I met with. I check levels then eat a breakfast that has 30 grams of carbs. Then test levels after 2 hours, have a snack with 30 grams of carbs, eat lunch with 45 grams of carbs an 1.5 later, test 2 hours later, eat snack 30 grams of carbs, 1.5 or later eat dinner 45 grams of carbs, test 2 hours later, then a snack before bed of 30 grams if carbs.

basically stay on a schedule and pretty much eat all day!
  • My last ultrasound last week the baby was right on track for 27 weeks, I've even had some glucose levels in the 200's

As far as lows, I don't feel anything until the 40s but it goes from hmmmm to shaking and nausea quick

However anything 150 And over I feel quick, sweaty, drunk feeling overly tired.
  • In regards to big babies--I had my anatomy scan at 18 weeks and baby was measuring 9 days ahead and in the 98% percentile....but I don't think I'd developed gd yet at that point (?). At any rate, I'm 5'10 and my brothers are 6'4 and 6'6, so I wasn't surprised. We'll see, I guess, what happens. I gained extra weight before this pregnancy--I think it was sad weight from my losses--so I started out heavier than I'd like, but have only gained 10 pounds thus far and my OB is pleased.

With regards to large babies, I had GD with DS1, was diet controlled and delivered him at almost full term. He weighed 7lbs 3oz so he wasn't a large baby. I was very strict with my diet though and was able to keep my blood sugar in check.

  • @MRSclarke08...I am so happy for you!  My numbers have been better the last few days but still not great. I am sure my dosage will be adjusted on Thursday when I got MFM. But I will take 96 over 120 any day!
  • This is my first time posting to the group.
I am 25 y/o, first time mom, and 27 weeks. I just received the call with diagnosis this morning. I've expected it a little bit because I was overweight to start, diabetes runs in the family, and I have felt a little off lately when I have had sugar, but it still is scary to me.
I have already been put on blood pressure meds and gone through a few different labs so far in the pregnancy. It just makes me feel a little like a failure and I'm worried now for the health of my baby boy.
My husband is very supportive and we are anxious to see the specialist that my doctor has referred us to.
Just thought I would be proactive and jump on here to see what tips I could find until then!
  • @rachaeltripp this is last weeks GD check in thread, there is a new one that was started this morning!! I almost did the same thing, this was my first week posting too :0)
