Babies: 9 - 12 Months

delaying milk because of eczema??

has anyone read anything about delaying milk because dc has eczema?  dr told us to hold off on yogurt till ds was 11 months, and now we're wondering about milk.  our pedi is out of town till the end of january because of a family emergency, so ds will be almost 13 months when we see her.  i've tried to search it but i am not having any luck.  TIA!

Re: delaying milk because of eczema??

  • No ihaven't and my DS has this little spot that appeared about 2 months and is just now fading on his leg. They never diagnosed it fully as eczema but it would come & go frequently. Now that we are minimall doing Enfamil Nxt Step, its clearing and we're on whole milk, however he's more gassy so I dunno if maybe itw as the formula causing the inflammation or what, nowhere else on his entire body does he have spots like that one on his leg. My chart says to introduce milk at 12 months, so maybe do just 1 bottle/cup of it a day and see how it goes. It won't hurt to wait another month too if you're worried about a reaction. My pedi said to offer "any and all foods" at this point b/c more research is showing higher chance of allergies by delaying foods. But me...I'm still staying away from fish & nuts, but milk, eggs, wheat and others we're doing and have no problems yet.

  • We won't be giving DD cow's milk on a regular basis until she's probably around 2 or 3, and when we do, it will be organic. Just my preference. She probably won't get yogurt until around a year, and we might just go with goat's milk yogurt.
  • This is what I understood from DD's allergist.  Eczema is an allergic reaction, and there are some studies that link it to asthma, and a higher accurance of milk allergies, but there are of course studies that debunk that.  I guess some Drs believe that you should hold off on milk (and milk products) when a child has a history of eczema.

DD had eczema (so do DH and I, so it's no surprise) but neither her Dr nor her allergist suggested we hold off on milk products.  We started yogurt a month ago, and will start milk in a few weeks.  My Dr. pointed out that not only was DD getting milk protein (what causes the allergies) through my BM, but also from the formula she was on.

I would think though, that if your Dr suggested holding off on yogurt until a specific time, the same would go for milk.  Is there another Dr you can see while she's gone?  I'd want an answer (I'm so impatient!).

As an aside, DH had eczema as a baby.  The Dr told his mom to hold off on milk (this was 30 years ago).  She became super anxious about it, and all of a sudden DH had a 'deadly milk allergy'.  Until about 2 years ago, DH believed his mother and had never touched milk.  I sent him to the allergist, and it turned out that he was fine, and never had a milk allergy after all.
