STM's: Were you late?!

edited July 2014 in December 2014 Moms
For the STM's out there:

Ok, I'm curious - how many of you were overdue with your first pregnancies? DH know's I'm not thrilled with the threat of having a holiday baby and keeps telling me that all his friends with LO's were late with the first one (though I think he may be trolling me). Barring any serious complications, how many of you were later or earlier with cutie pie #1? How far off from your due date were you?

BTW, for those of you expecting on a holiday, please do not be offended - none was intended. Those of you with holiday birthdays, I think you understand what I'm talking about!

Edit: I know every circumstance is different and this kid will decide to greet the world when they're ready. I'm just curious with other's experiences, I love hearing what you ladies have to say :). I think its a part of the community experience.

Re: STM's: Were you late?!

  • DS1 was born at 38w5d
    DS2 was born at 37w2d
    DS3 was born at 39w

I went into labor on my own without any medical intervention (induction or anything else).

Everyone is different and baby will come when he/she is ready.  Unfortunately you can't really base it on other people's experiences.

  • I'm due on Christmas Eve. However, I'm not concerned seeing as how most babies aren't born on their due dates. My DS was 2 1/2 weeks early. Of course, this really doesn't mean much for this pregnancy. Each pregnancy is different and each baby will come when he/she is ready. Unless you can schedule a C-section or induction, there really is no way to know.

  • My first was 10 days early. I was technically induced with my second 9 days early, but I was 5cm and 100% effaced so more than likely would have gone into labor within a day or so.

  • I went into labor with DD at exactly 39 weeks. She was born after midnight so technically 39/1.

  • DS was born at 41 weeks 2 days and probably would have been later but I had dangerously low fluid and had to be induced.

This exactly! Except I had a DD. I did have my own contractions for about 24 hours but never went into active labor so they still had me come in for my scheduled induction.

  • Interesting to see the differences. DH is hoping baby is "on time" (per due date) or late due to the seasonal nature of his work. Told him we can't really control when baby comes. :)
  • I was induced at 41 weeks. Probably would have gone later I think

My OB told me that the statistical average for FTMs is 41 weeks. I was induced with my first at 39 weeks (due to a medical issue). Baby seemed very happy in there and I don't think he was planning on vacating any time soon.

I made it to 39 weeks for my scheduled cs with my second baby too. He was almost nine pounds. I think he would have stuck around a while longer too.

My unsolicited advice to all FTM is this: don't get your heart set on having the baby "on time". It will just feel like a disappointment if you go a little longer. So many FTM's convince themselves that the baby is going to be early or be born exactly on the due date and then they are all worried and upset when it doesn't happen.

Also, talk to your OB. Most of the time, they are comfortable with FTM's going all the way to 42 weeks. If there isn't anything wrong with the placenta or with the mama, there isn't a reason to induce before then.
  • Well, due to complications, my first was 2.5 weeks early. I was 37 weeks and change. Not something I would recommend as he was not fully cooked and had breathing issues, etc. However, as pp's have mentioned the average first time mom, if left alone, goes well past 40 weeks. More than likely your DH is quite right.

  • DD was born at 41w1d after an emergency c/s. I was not in labour and I have no idea how much later she might have been if not for the c/s. I think i read before that the average ftm gives birth at 40w and a few days.

I was induced at 40w4d, but I was in early labor at the time. I probably wouldn't have gone much longer if they had waited for me to go into labor naturally.

This. Think of your due date as 42 weeks. It was so disappointing to see my due date come and go and still be pregnant.

  • 17 days late.
  • I'm sure something like only 3% of babies arrive on their due date. I'm due December 19th but will be induced at 37 weeks due to a medical condition I have. I was induced at 37 weeks with ds too but when I was examined I was already 2cm dilated so it's likely I would have had him within a week or so anyway. Actually I should really be on the November board but I'm staying here hahaha x

This. My water broke at 40w3d and I was beyond over it bc I was convinced DS would be early since I was ready. That last week was excruciating bc I hadn't prepared myself for an overdue baby and I was just barely overdue.

  • Due to complicationsvmy daughter was born at 34 weeks. With this one my scheduled csection wilk be at 39 weeks 12/22.
  • With both kids I was induced at 40w5d
  • LO #1 - I was induced at 40 weeks, 6 days on the morning of July 5th. I get where your coming from about the holiday. I was set to be induced on July 4th but when we called the hospital it was full so I had to call and check the next morning. He was born on the 5th via C-section. So this little one will be a repeat C-section at 39 weeks. When I went in to be induced I felt no contractions but turns out I was having one every 2 minutes. DS had been head down the entire pregnancy but tilted his head in the end and that was the need for a C-section.

I think your DH is right. Whether late or early not all babies are born on their actual due date.

  • DS was born at 38 weeks exactly. Spontaneously.
  • My original due date was 1/28 then after my anatomy scan they changed it to 1/20. I was scheduled for induction on 1/27. My water broke on 1/26 at 11pm and they still induced me the next day. DS was born at either 39w6d or 40w6d and he was 10lbs

  • Spontaneous labor 5 days before the due date with DD (though I think they miscalculated the leap year, so I think only 3 days before her due date). Thank goodness though, since she was already 9.5 lbs and 22 inches long!!

I was originally thinking it would be in the 37 week range since both my mom and grandma had all of their babies a month early at around 6lbs- I guess I just like to bake 'em a little longer!

I'm expecting similar as DD this time, but who knows, every pregnancy is different I've heard!

    Meether:
I was also hoping to go late and was relaxing when my water broke at 38 weeks. I was so oblivious that I was having contractions all day long and didn't think about labor at all. I had her 2 hrs after my water broke so she was definitely ready. DH had to install the carseat on a whim, my mom washed up her clothes and they made the finishing touches to our place while I was in the hospital. This time around, I have no expectations...except work doesn't offer any leave if you go past 40 weeks :(

  • My first came at 36w6d. He was considered preemie by one day.
  • I went into labor with DS at 39w3d but had him at 39w5d so almost exactly his due date. I went into labor but my water never broke and my doctor wanted everything to progress naturally because there were no complications so it was just a lot of waiting.
