Home from NICU: Grant's Birth Story

It's been a crazy week and I can't believe my little guy is here.

Short Story: Grant David was born at 11:45 on 7/11 weighing 8lbs 14oz and 20 ½ in long. Due to infection during labor LO spent week in NICU.

Long Story (Birth & NICU Stay): At 41 weeks 1 day I was scheduled to be induced on 7/10. I started on Cytotec at 9 am and sent to walking the halls. By 5 pm I was still at 3cm so my OB decided to break my waters and contractions started; however no progression by 7:30 so we moved on to pitocin. By 10:30 I was having steady yet manageable contractions but much to my disappointment was still at 3cm. They continued to up the pitocin until around midnight when I become nauseous and was vomiting during every contraction (medication given to help with nausea was not working). While the contractions were painful the constant vomiting was a million times worse and at 2:30am after OB announced I was STILL 3cm I felt emotionally and physically deflated and just wanted to throw in the towel. After vomiting increased and baby went into distress (recovered after I moved positions and was given oxygen) I waved the white flag and requested an epidural. After another scare from baby's heart beat dropping I was able to get some rest. At 5:30am I was 7cm – finally some progress! By 9am I was 10cm 100% effaced and ready to push around 10 am (epidural had started to wear off and could move my legs again). Pushing was not as bad as I expected; however I had developed a fever and everyone was closing monitoring the baby who's temp was also rising. I was given antibiotics and fortunately since baby was moving down with every push OB felt I could continue to deliver vaginally.

Grant was born at 11: 45am looking perfect but with a temperature of 102. After holding him for a few moments DH followed him to nursery where they quickly stabilized his temp but continued to monitor while I was in recovery. It was 2 hours before I got to see my little guy again due to my own fever and bleeding and another 3 before I was well enough to hold him. After spending the night together we were told the next day that Grant's blood work showed he had an infection and would have to move to NICU to receive antibiotics. It was hard not to be able to cuddle with LO and watch tests being done but harder still the third day when I was released and would not be bringing home LO as I had imagined. To wrap up this incredibly long story Grant received several rounds of antibiotics and fluids while DH and I made several trips a day to visit him. On the final night we were able to room in with LO in NICU so they could ensure he was eating and after a rocky start we're finally all happy to be home.

Thank you for reading Grant's story, enjoy some photos : )
