7w u/s but baby meas 5.5w - UPDATE BAD NEWS

Ok ladies, I have been relatively ok all day but now that it's bedtime my mind and googling are going crazy. I had my first ultrasound today, was supposed to be at 7 weeks based on lmp but dr said baby was measuring around 5.5 and it was too early to see the heartbeat. I'm going to see him again in a week, but wanted to see if anyone has had this happen and had a healthy baby? Also starting yesterday I've had the worst all day nausea ever. And I never had any nausea when I was pregnant with DD. All my other symptoms are still there too....my dr suggested I could just be off on my dates. But I know im not. I guess I could have ovulated late, but I don't think so bc I did ovulation testing right around June 13 and got positive ovulation tests.

As I feared (and suspected based on my dates) the pregnancy stopped progressing weeks ago it seems. There has been no growth or change, no heartbeat. I'll probably have a d&c next week. I hope all of you have healthy pregnancys that lead to happy little babies to bring home. DH and will enjoy and dote on DD all the more during this time.

Were you temping and charting? Without that, you don't really know precisely when you Od, so it is possible your dates are off.

Were you temping to confirm ovulation? If you ovulated late your baby would be measuring smaller than LMP date. At this point if you aren't absolutely certain when you ovulated it's absolutely possible and likely that you have a healthy bean, just not as far along as you thought.

Fx crossed that you ovulated a little later than you thought, and implanted a little late. I'm sure that's scary though.

I hope so ladies! I was keeping track with an app and testing using ovulation tests but not temping. I guess those tests only give you a likelihood of ovulation?

If you were using OPKs, they only detect the LH surge, it doesn't guarantee that you will ovulate. That's why temping is important to confirm ovulation.

Good to know. We have been lucky enough to get pregnant on the first try both times so I never delved into tracking temps or fully understanding how to tell exactly when I ovulate. I'm hoping to stay distracted the next week or so and have good news next Friday $:\$ ">

Those tests only mean that you're getting ready to ovulate. With my first pregnancy they changed my due date a couple of times while they tried to figure out how far along I was because I have long, unpredictable cycles. It's possible your dates are just off. Good luck!

I'm 5w4d now and according to tracking I ovulated 6/23. I think it would be impossible to get a positive pregnancy test on 6/24 if you're only 5.5 weeks. Are you sure that's the date you got your positive test?

I went in for first ultrasound thinking I was 7wks & only measured 5wks. I had a 2wk wait for another ultrasound. I was off w/my period dates (just couldn't remember) so of course no idea when I ovulated. I went back in Tuesday & measure 6w3d. I tested 6.20 & got a negative test. Tested again 6.27 & got a positive result. I am 7wks today. I said all that to say you could be off on the day you ovulated. Either way I know the wait sucks. Praying for good results for your next ultrasound.

I have a sinking feeling when I think about the dates but I guess all I can do is try to be positive and wait. DDs 2nd bday and party is today so once I'm out of bed I hope I'll be distracted enough not to think about this anymore today. My mom was incredulous about how negative I was and wouldn't listen to me about dates. She just kept saying that the pregnancy tests can tell so early now maybe I was earlier than I thought. I just hope the u/s was off. Even my dr said that they can be off by a few days in addition to my dates being off. I'll update you guys when/if I know more. I'm going thru the same thing.

went for a ultra sound thinking I was 9 weeks and am only 5-6. Took a HPT on July 4, BFP using digital. And have taken 3 more since then too all positive. The tech said they could see the sac that they see in early pregnancy. I'm still so worried and can't stop thinking there's nothing in there. Praying for you girl

That is the worst! I had that happen and unfortunately it did not end well. But I was POSITIVE about the date of conception and it was frustrating that people wouldn't listen to me. However there really is a lot of room for error sometimes the sam can be hidden a little and it measures small. There is nothing you can do so just enjoy your daughters party (looks like fingers crossed for both of us, our little ones will be the same distance apart!) I am having a hell of a time waiting for my first US and I know how hard that waiting is. I have very little symptoms at 6 1/2 weeks and that makes me so nervous!! At least you aren't alone!!

Unfortunately, I would agree that the dates don't line up that it would be possible to be 5.5 weeks since you literally got a BFP 3.5 weeks ago. In my first pregnancy, I was indeed off on my dates by a little bit and had a healthy child. For my second pregnancy, it went very similar to what you've described and unfortunately ended in a loss.

I'm so sorry you are in limbo. I know how awful this waiting time is. Hugs to you.

This happened to me with my first daughter. I went in for an u/s and should have been 9 weeks but they moved it back to 7 weeks. I must have just ovulated later than usual. She was born 3 weeks early but completely healthy.

This happened to me in my first pregnancy and, unfortunately, ended in a loss. Every pregnancy is different, though, so I agree with PP's that the measurements could be off or that LO could catch up. I'm so sorry you're going through this. FX for you! ((hugs))

Last Wednesday (7/9) I went to the doctor because I had pain near my right ovary and very very light spotting. I was concerned about a tubal pregnancy or miscarriage. Based on my LMP I should have been 6 weeks 1 day, the doctor told me everything look fine, but when I looked at the ultrasound notes it showed my baby only measured 5 weeks 0 days (no embryonic pole or Heart Beat) . I FREAKED out. I had an ultrasound this past Wednesday (7/16). I had a little spotting/ cramping the day before and a lot of my symptoms went away so was sure I miscarried and was prepared for it when I went it...especially because based on my LMP I was 8 days behind.

The ultrasound showed that my baby was now 6 weeks 3 days (only 5 days behind LMP), had an embryonic pole and a little flicker of a heartbeat. I am still scared because heart beat wasn't too strong and don't go till Tuesday (7/9). My symptoms have come back but I am giving it to God because it really is out of my control. I can't continue to worry myself sick about this.

So just pray until your next appointment and I will pray for you too!

I had a similar experience this weekend. I am sure of my LMP date so I would be eight weeks tomorrow but at the ultra sound on Friday they measured 6w3d. Not too far off but it threw me. They said it could be due to whenever I ovulated and she also pointed out that when it's that early it can be very difficult to get a good measurement so they can be off a bit too. At that date, the u/s are pretty preliminary. I would talk to your doctor about next time you see him/her but I wouldn't stress too much about it!

Gahhh half the responses to this post are killing me. LMP MEANS NOTHING; it's an estimate for your ovulation day. If you know when you ovulated & baby measures small, that's worrisome. If you got a + test and baby measures so small the date of the + test is physiologically impossible, that's worrisome. But if you just know LMP & baby measures small, welcome to the life of anyone with a non-textbook cycle. The reassurance is irrelevant to the OP's situation.

OP, I'm sorry you're in limbo. FX it was just a bad u/s or for your dates being off a bit -- I had a + test at 7 DPO so if yours was that early it would have made you around 6.5 at the u/s, still off from the measurement they got, but a bit closer... Nothing to do but wait, hope for the best, prepare for the worst. And eat ice cream, obviously. ::hugs::

thanks for your post. Yea my + would have had to be at about 7 dpo, super early...I'm hoping for that and a crap first u/s but am also prepared for the worst. Friday can't get here soon enough. Just wish if it's not a go this time my nausea wouldn't be so bad. Ugh!!!

If you got a BFP on 6/24, I'm not sure how you get that happened at 7 dpo with the measurements you listed. I hope the I/s was indeed off by that much though.

I'm pretty much in the exact same boat as you. .. down to my bfp on the 24th. Crazy! I'm also scared and very nervous and go back and forth from not hopeful to very hopeful. I was doing some charting though I had lots of things going on making it difficult to really be sure of ovulation. One thing that's interesting though that I've heard and may match up with my charts is late implantation. I think I implanted pretty late after ovulation which I've heard can throw off baby size in early ultrasounds... which makes sense if baby implanted 3 days after ovulation versus 13. I don't know it for sure but it's giving me some hope. I think I may have implanted just a a few days before the bfp but who knows? Maybe the same is true for you! I also took one of those clearblue digital tests that tell you how far you are from ovulation a day after my first bfp. I thought I was 2 to 3 and it told me 1 to 2 even then (of course I assumed it wasn't that accurate). Any ways.. point is I guess we can't ever be sure and there's so many variables that play a part in this. It's driving me crazy waiting... they told me to come back in 2 weeks for another us (which keeps me waiting till next monday). I'll be thinking of you and sending you lots of good wishes! Hopefully we both see strong heartbeats and growing babes on our next ultrasounds!

what did your dr say when you went in for the first u/s? Anything positive/negative? Mine just said maybe my dates were off and didn't say anything about mc until I asked and he said we would just have to wait and see and that he often sees these things work themselves out. It's so hard to wait. I just want to know already.

I had the same thing with my last two pregnancy but were accompanied with light bleeding, sadly the fetus just stopped growing and I misscarried at 8 weeks and the other at 12.... Just pray that ur dates are wrong, and don't google, I know it's soo hard but the more you stress the more u stress the little one X I have my 7 week ultrasound today for my third pregnancy, trying to be positive x

@sandc63‌ the doc doing the ultrasound seemed cautious... specifically by when I got my bfp. Said all looks well for 5.5 weeks but did not look like a 7 week should. Said dates may be off but have to wait and see. Overall scared me a lot... 'this can go either way... we'll just wait and see' my actual doc called me later that night and was more reassuring and said she thinks my dates are off but we'll wait and see. I was taking meds that make it likely I ovulated later than I thought (or more accurately.. very unlikely for me to ovylate when I think I did).. so I try to reassure myself with that and I think my doc thinks that's the case too. Trying not to stress.... won't help any.
