cloth diaper users come in :)

edited July 2014 in Parenting after a Loss
Hi ladies, from the get go I wanted to cloth diaper, but we didn't have a washer and dryer so it just wasn't practical unfortunately. We finally got a washer and dryer (!!!) So now I want to start! I really don't have a clue of what to use or where to start. Any tips, advice, brands etc etc??, anything would be greatly appreciated! TIA! :)

I missed BPF so here's Zaiden at Grammie and Poppy's pool :)

  • We cloth diaper and love it. We used prefolds and covers for newborn stage but switched to OS around 10 weeks. For our OS stash, I have about 8 AIO and 22 pockets. We use BumGenius diapers. I agree with going into a store if possible. I went to a 2 hour workshop and it was very helpful.

I think that kklamb covered things really well, I just wanted to say YES to cloth diapering!! I love it so much. And I keep a spreadsheet with what I spend, and I can compare to disposables and make sure that I stay cheaper. The CD board is fantastic though, so definitely lurk around and don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem silly. The ladies there know their stuff and are super helpful.

Thanks ladies! I'm really excited :) what does aio, pocket, flts stand for? What brand do you all use? How often do you typically have to change the cover? Thanks! :)

ETA: I think I use prefolds as burp clothes...

I started off with some AppleCheeks All-in-2s and a Bum Genius Pocket (4.0) and a Bum Genius All-in-one. I personally prefer pockets to AIOs, but that isn't for everyone. Many people hate having to stuff the pockets, but I enjoy it. Since I started, I learned that a couple of AIOs are good for me since they aren't my favourite, I love the BG fit, I love that Acs are hybrids but they don't fit my daughter as well. I also started using fitteds and covers for ON (sustainable babyish - they are bamboo and awesome), and I've even started using some covers with prefolds. I like having this more varied stash because I like everything for different purposes. I am also liking natural fibres a lot more - we have hard water and they clean up so much better than micro fibre.

I have approximately 30-35 changes in my stash. I wash every other day, and have a few more diapers than I need just in case we go through extras or I need to strip some or something.

  • Thanks for all your help ladies!

  • CDing is confusing! Definitely check out the CD board, those ladies are really helpful.

First decide what type you want to use - all-in-one, pocket, prefold, etc. We use pocket because they're adjustable and easier to use than prefolds with covers. I think the adjustable ones (we use bumgenius 4.0) are more cost effective too because the same diapers/inserts can be used from newborn through potty training stages so you don't have to keep buying bigger covers which bothered me about the prefolds.

You can also buy CDs second hand, check ebay or craigslist. Sounds weird, but it's a good way to get cheap diapers. For example the ones I get are $20/piece regular price ($18 if you look for sales online and whatnot) but you can buy them 2nd hand for $13! I have about 22 or so and that is plenty. I wash the dirty ones every other day. But if you don't want to wash that often you can buy more, some people do.

Which brings me to my next point, they are a good investment because you can sell them after you're done with them! Or use them for the next kiddo. ;-)

  • @BootsOrHearts‌ thanks for the info :) what do you use for inserts? Also if I was to get pockets can I put the insert outside of the pocket to reuse cover if needed?

We use the microfiber inserts that they came with. Some of the CD regs prefer to use hemp inserts because they are more absorbent but I'm too cheap to do that and I haven't really had leak problems.

The inserts actually go inside the pocket which is different than prefolds where the cover goes on top.  With the pocket ones the inserts can't go against the baby's skin because the pocket layer wicks the moisture away and keeps baby's skin dry.  It's hard to explain, definitely watch the CD 101 videos that will help.

Oh ok. I think I understand now. I was just talking with my husband and we are going to spend the extra and get AIO. I think that will be the easiest option for us. All this confuses the crap out of me and easiest is best. Lol we will still save in the long run so I'm happy :)

Cloth is the best! It's a little confusing at first, but you'll get a hang of the lingo :) Just a heads up, AIO do take longer to dry because you're not supposed to put them in the dryer. It will wear the PUL (the waterproof layer) out much quicker and shorten their lifespan. That's the main reason I like pockets over AIOs. You still have to line dry the cover, but since there's no absorbsency they dry much quicker. Then you can dry the incerts.

About the pockets. One of the brands we use is apple cheeks. Their pockets are technically an all in two. So the first time I lay the insert on top of the diaper and when that one is wet I stuff the pocket with a new one. Or I can just keep laying them on top and use it basically as a cover. It doesn't work every time because if the fleece is wet or she poops you have to change it but you have to change a cover if it's pooped in too. I like that hybrid aspect of them.

  • How did all of you prep your diapers and what is your wash/dry rountine? Oh and stripping... how do you do it and how often have you had to?

  • I'm just going to jump back in here...

To prep I washed them a few times and dried them, NBD. My current wash routine is to wash EOD by starting out with a cold soak, then a cold wash, followed by a hot wash, and lastly a dry on low.

Natural fibers (Cotton, hemp, bamboo) need more washes to prep than synthetics (microfiber) because you have to get the natural oils out. I generally do 5 washes and drys on natural fibers. You really only need one wash and dry with synthetics. You don't want to mix natual and synthetics when prepping. The oils will clog up the microfiber and you might get repelling issues. Once everything is prepped, though, you can wash everything together.

My wash routine is a hot double rinse on the highest water level, no detergent. Then a hot heavy wash with detergent and an extra rinse, highest water level. I line dry the covers and dry the prefolds and inserts. Or if it's a nice day out I hang everything out on the clothes line.

You really only need to strip when you run into an issue, like stink or repelling beacause of build up.
